  1. My hybrids are as tame as ferrets, mind you they were handled daily from 4 weeks. They work like ferrets, just a bit quicker,if they come out just behind a rabbit they will chase it for 3 or 4 mts.
  2. I agree with you Dan, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
  3. that is the problem ,fecking bollox laws that let you use a fecking bird to hunt game it cant kill as quick as a dog can The bird isn't left to kill , it just holds while you, as quickly as posible get there and kill. But I agree, the law is illogical. i know that mate ,its just that the law was brought in because animals that were chased by dogs were put under stress from the chase then took time to die from being bitten by the dogs ,well ,they must think the same animals dont mind being chased by a fecking bird and being scared as hell untill the owner of the bird has to take
  4. I agree with this, they get a bit smelly in the trap over night, but a quick jet wash soon cleans them up .

  7. You can get over or under shot jaw crop up in any breeding.
  8. There's ferrets and there's ratting ferrets. A lot of ferrets won't face rats. I've tried loads over the years, most won't and even if they will ,they won't for long. having said that there are good ratting strains. Do rats generally fight back then or do most of them run? Some will if they can,but if cornered or defending young will fight.

  10. Another thing that may be of interest. Iv'e been breeding rats for hawk food for 10yrs.I started with a male and 2 female siblings. About 7yrs ago I caught a baby male, wild rat and mated that in. Thats the only new blood ever used and they are still sound and breeding well with no culling at all.
  11. Shouldn't be any proplem, I've done it in the past with positive results. Remember lurchers, unlike pedigree dogs, are usualy bred unrelated for generations. So once in a while won't cause any proplems.
  12. I've seen a 22" bitch that could kill hares on the fens, wouldn't have thought it to look at her, mind you her sire and dam were Merlin and Eve.
  13. I've run good single handed, daytime hare dogs that could lamp, ferret ,or mooch with terriers, taken pheasant and partridge. I've had good lamping, ferreting and mooching lurchers that could'nt catch daytime hares single handed from one season to the next. Now you tell me which ones were the all rounders.
  14. I can't see how a dog can be called an all rounder, if can't take daytime hares single handed.
  15. Thing is your average lurcher can ,brought on right, make a very good lamper, ferreter,or moocher. It takes something special to take 3/3, 5/5, 7/7, or even more daytime hares.
  16. If they were that good they'd not be for sale or sold already. your mate will find better elswhere.
  17. im not doubting if the effort is put into these type of dogs they make good allrounders also but i think most keep and work them for one specific quarry, which seems a waste to me.. Not a waste if you intend to match the dog, you stand to lose a lot if you get it knocked up doing other stuff.
  18. I used to run hare dogs, merlin/eve.Maybe some won't lower themselve mate, but they make great allrounders, mine and mates lamped, ferreted, mooched, they were even good at pheasant.
  19. Not saying they're all the same ,but I had one years ago, it was crap, wasn't worth a bowl of dog food.
  20. I'm not a pest controler, I'm a sportsman, I flew 3 harris hawks in pairs and individually on a daily basis throughout the season and yes, the last couple of weeks of the season I'm tired, ready for a rest. Two weeks into the moult I cant wait to get out again. I think one problem with lack of respect is caused by the obsession with numbers. I know pest control is different, but I hunt for the pleasure of working with the birds, the prey, once it's in the bag is a usable bye product. I was the same when I ran dogs.
  21. I don't agree with it, but it's not meant to be a test .it's to keen them up ,when I was a lad folks used to use chickens .
  22. I agree 100 %. In fact my standard response to the criticism I receive is......... "which are you...............vegetarian or hypocrite ???" To which I never had a sensible retort. In fact the funniest response was........"why do you need to hunt, I get my rabbits from the butcher...............they are imported from china you know" At that point I booked in for my first hernia operation at the local hospital.. I always say, If I need to explain you'll never understand.
  23. In answer to your 1st question, it's not because he's young, it's because you haven't trained the recall. And yes it needs nipping in the bud. Most folk think they've trained thier dog to recall but they haven't, as it is in your case. A dog trained to recall, comes wether it wants to or not, it's not a matter of being more interesting than the distraction, it's a matter of conditioning the dog to believe there's no option but to obay the recall. Any dog will come if it wants to.I've tried to explain on another thread but all you get is folk that haven't got a clue argueing the toss. If you ne
