  1. Just go up there more often mate, they'll get fed up before you do
  2. Really sorry mate, might not be the right time to hear it, but the sooner you start looking forward to your next dog the better you'll feel mate, keep your chin up. Mike.
  3. Me ,playing the low d whistle, really makes the world go away for me, pisses the rest of the household right off though blues harmonica! I won't even go there
  4. hi mate, completely understand what your saying, how long a line should i be having her on,what we talking 20m or so?i obviously want her to stay in range of the gun and keep her relatively tight, although if she puts rabbits up then she on for a run but im thinking more of pheasants that are plenty on some of my permission out in the rough,(when the season for them starts lol)if i can get her good enough would like to try using her at night with a long net, just something iv always wanted from a dog and to try my hand at,thanks again for your help, rob Hi Rob, 3 or 4m would do, might even wor

  6. Don't know what to say for the best mate, you really need a greyhound vet ,trouble with most vets is they do what's best for their wallet , not what's best for the dog . Mike.
  7. It works, nice healthy looking kits mate, Mike.
  8. Sounds like it might be broke mate but only x ray will tell you for sure. Mike.
  9. I partly agree with what you are saying smokers are an excellent method to bolt rats. Now if I may include this in your topic alexcjacko I have nt used a ferret to rats in a lot of years(30 odd+) but have bolted them whilst rabbiting I've never known myself or anyone else that have dug down and found a ferret facing rat anyone on here that has? When ratting out buildings, clearing rubbish/bales etc when you get close to finishing Why are rats piled up in corners heads down on top of each other? Y.I.S Leeview It's because rats won't face a ferret unless there cornered, don't ask how I
  10. The method I used to train dogs to quarter in to the wind , which is the usual practice, was to put the dog on a line. You then start to quarter yourself and at an appropriate moment , just before the dog reaches the end of the line give one sharp pip on the whistle and change direction. If you do this the dog learns to change direction to the whistle, once that's mastered you work the dog off the line, turning on the whistle at whatever range you think appropriate. With practice and experience eventually the dog learns to do it automatically without much use of the whistle. Mike.
  11. Nature don't do ferrets mate, they're already man made ! Nature does polecats so according to that theory you should be working polecats. And without folk "messing around with genetics " there'd be no domestic animals whatsoever. May be you best rethink your opinion.
  12. Well all the Springers and Cockers that I've trained and my current Gsp stop to the whistle. I once trained a Bedlington Greyhound to stop right behind a rabbit on command also. Just because a dog is professionally trained doesn't mean its not been spoiled by it's owner and I've known many a gamekeeper that couldn't train a dog to shit. When I was running dogs I spent most of my time out alone as I couldn't see the point of taking the trouble to train dogs to a high standard to then have other folks dogs running a mock and fecking up my sport. Ill trained dogs are a pain in the arse.
  13. spot on the 2 mixy were in a bad way , didnt move at all, he knew they were differnt to the loads he caught last season, he had no intrest in them.? last pic retrieved 150 yards away, and i still say you carnt make lurcher do it (if) it dont want fact So why does a trained dog chasing a rabbit stop on the whistle, because it most certainly doesn't want to, I'll answer that, because it's trained to obey your wishes not it's own. are we talking labs, springers,? yes them breeds will do that, but not many lurchers will.? I've trained a Bedlington

  15. I train recall first , once that's sorted , retrieve is easy, just send the dog, as soon as it's picked up, recall, easy as that.
  16. good advice Dell, but with this retrieving dummy or live stuff. I reckon it dont really matter what you do, because a dog will ony do it (if) it wants, you carnt make it fact. Last week he found 2 mixy rabbits, 1 on monday, the other friday. Now as most know on here my dog as caught loads of rabbits last season, and retrieved all rabbits back to me. So when he got these mixy rabbits last, i thought he could a nice bit of retrieving for me as he aint, done much since last season. Well did he want to bring these back, did he as feck, mouth'ed them where they were, and left them there.?? Now you

  18. not any more got him with a piece of a rasher For future reference mate, I've found they can't resist white chocolate. Mike.
  19. As said , stand with your back to a wall, fence or gate, and never chase the dog to get the dummy. A good fuss should be the reward. Mike.
  20. i think your right because before he seemed to want to everything i asked of him,now he doesnt, aside from bonding with him more (i do walk him 2x a day without the other dogs and try and spend some time with him each day) there what else is there i could do? Is he kennelled alone, or has he got company, company may keep him quiet but then you have the problem of him maybe bonding with one of the other dogs rather than you. If I was you I would go right back to basics. When you first get a pup you give it lots of fuss and attention, you create a bond before you start any training, so give
  21. Rabbit's not much good for putting weight on, too low in fat.Green beef tripe will do the trick, if you can't get it, just lumps of fat from the butchers along with the rabbit, will work wonders. Mike.
  22. If, your hosing a 9 month old pup down mate, no wonder he runs off ! he must hate you, tempting though it is, you need to remain calm, be his friend. Try wearing an old sweatshirt all day, rub it under your arm pits then give it to him to sleep with, it works sometimes. Lay off training for a couple of weeks, use the time to read a book on training, then start again from scratch and do it properly. You've made the common mistake of believing he's trained because he does as he's told because he wants to, now he doesn't want to , you find he's not trained at all. Mike.
  23. Rain every day, all day for last fortnight here ! had to rescue chickens today, knee deep in mud.
  24. Couldn't see the duck get eaten, some bony feck got his head in the way !
