Had any luck selling your birds mate. -
It would be true that in Ireland there may be good hare dogs without saluki blood , but might that be because the brown hare is uncommon in Ireland and that the far more common Irish hare is inferior in performance terms to the rare brown.

Seen a dog kill 7 or 9, can't seem to remember exactly, it was a long time ago, but I think it was 9, off one slip. It ran a few of of them carrying the previous hare for some of the way ! It was on the fens mid winter, a dog named rooster, out of merlin and eve. Mike.

Don't even consider it, they are a thing of the past and should never be used.As you say if the ferrets lost it will starve to death, if it meets stoat, weasel, or mink to name a few, it can't defend it's self. Mike.

One thing you need to remember, when you speak about deerhounds is that somewhere about the beginning of the 19th century the deerhound had almost died out. the dogs of today may look like the dogs of old that were bred for hunting deer, but the modern dogs of today were never bred for work and carry the blood of other breeds used to revive them , such as borzoi, bloodhound and I've even read of pyrenean mountain dog ! So that might explain why all the deerhounds I've seen run, didn't live up to their reputation. The saluki on the other hand has been kept pure for centuries. Thats wolfh

I once owned a pure deerhound bitch, it had no more stamina than my working pure greyhound and to be honest I found it very disappointing. Never owned a pure saluki but had plenty of saluki crosses and they've pissed all over any deerhound crosses they've come up against. I've seen both pure breeds run and the deerhound looks second rate compared to the saluki. Mike.

You can't expect a dog to do it's part if you ain't done yours !

Thanks mate, it just goes to show ,to catch a lot there's got to be a lot about. -
My mate had rats in his ferret shed, they were living behind the hutches !, and I've seen rats going into working terrier runs to take dog food while the dogs were asleep a couple of feet away.

Had a bitch catch 46 one night, first 10 without missing, then got the next 5, a lot of the 46 were out of the seat though, stamina weren't its strong point but it was very clever. One memorable night, only saw one rabbit all night, long slip, up jumped the rabbit before the dog got there, just got into it's stride then hit a telegraph pole and killed it's self.So all we had that night was one suicide . -
I've fed anything and everything to my ferrets never had a problem, Had plenty live to 11 or 12 years old.

Sounds to me like she's already trained, get a good gun dog training book,or look on the net and learn the standard commands, whistle and hand signals and see what she can do. that may be all you need. Mike.

When most folk claim to have an allrounder, It's usually a cover for the fact that the dog is mediocre.
-
The best allrounder I ever had was a Saluki cross, Lamped, ferreted, bushed with terriers, was an exceptional pheasant and partridge dog, and had it's fair share of single handed daytime hares. mike.

The whistle signals I use are , Long peep = drop and stay, 2 pips = get on, 1 pip = turn (used when quartering) and a long pip pip pip pip for recall, Reason I use multiple pips for recall is, sometimes for long distances or in places that have an echo the dog doesn't always get the right direction on a short signal and may well set of in the wrong direction, if it sets off in the wrong direction with a longer recall signal it realises the sound is diminishing rather than getting louder so will right itself. Mike.

That,s right mate, mating merle to merle give you 25% on average of pups with a very high risk of eye and hear defects.Mike.
-
Yes mate, although all obedience training is a whole lot easier if done before entering. Mike.
-
Quartering is when ,say your working open land ,a moor or large field , you work the dog into the wind to catch any incoming scent, you train the dog to work back and forth across the wind covering much more ground than if the dog just runs away and back in front of you. Mike.

You want 3/4" x 3/4" 16 gauge weldmesh.
-
The best way foreword in that case then, might be to train them to wait till you give the fetch command, then once they've grasped that , you can then use the fetch command to send them for hidden retrieves. The next step is directions, to teach that you form a diamond shape with three visible retrieves and you being the bottom point of the diamond. Sit the dog in the centre of the diamond then send for the retrieves giving hand signals in the direction you want it to go, forgot to say, before this you need to be able to stop the dog on command also, otherwise you can't stop it from picking th

Hi mate, you don't really develop from there so to speak, you first need to know what you aim to achieve, then build the foundations towards that end. For instance, I presume your throwing a ball and letting the dogs chase and retrieve, which is the wrong thing to do, as a proper retriever should not run in, but wait until sent. A bit like building a house, you have plans and know exactly what it will look like when it's finished, where as you've started already, it's going to be difficult to build upper floors on the wrong foundations, It can be done but you would have to go back to basics an

Seen a 22" bitch kill hares on the fens, not a match dog but could kill 2 or 3 every time out. Mike.
