We were out today, this flooding is a nightmare!!! On the way, all the fields were a sea. . . . we got into trouble when the roads were flooded. . . we had to turn back when it came over the doors. . . . Eventually managed to get to the intended land, and although the fields were only boggy, the water table had risen, so every warren was flooded. . . . on the up side, all of the rabbits were sat out in cover . . . well those that had survived! Out again tomorrow and been told to pack waders a long with my usual kit P.S Like your cocker, new addition?

Was digging one day on the side of a mountain, to two slipped collars. . . . . both over 10 foot. . . . we managed to get to the first. . . . but never got the second. . . On the way we hit a large roll of chain link fence. . . and a car! Fun times.

Digging is a funny old thing. We all have our different ways of approaching it. A lot of the time you just have to adapt to the situation or conditions. . . If I'm doing relatively small places, 20 odd holes, then I usually use a pair of jills. They usually bolt them, but it's bolt or die. Sometimes it's straight in and squeal, rabbit held and soon dead. Other time you hear the rabbit being held and squealing, and then its lost, and you can get a mark as its dragging a ferret about. . . . some days they seem stronger than others. It's time consuming, so there are three options. . . ju

Yep, I'm ordering the Garmin. Would make life a lot easier. Although I dread to think how far they do go. Had them cross a major river earlier this season, well most of them did, one peeled off and went a mile or so up river after a different rabbit, but the rest plunged in and across. . . . . It was on the way back that they got swept away

There is always a moment though where you suddenly get a bit worried. . . it starts to creep in. It just feels that bit too long. . . On the reverse. . . I'm often thinking. . . that's a long time. . . too quiet. . . and then there it goes. . . . the fecking hound baying a mile away across a river :laugh:Sometimes it's better not to know

Yer, it's definatly a bit shit at times. But if you know the ground, usually you know where they will end up. Or you just have to have faith that if they have missed what they are hunting they will return, rather than just hunt on. There is a big difference between a dog just f***ing off and a dog hunting something. The problem arises when they catch it. . . . and stay with it.
-
Yer I've seen them display traits which could probably linked to a herding instinct. But then herding instinct is just refined hunting instinct anyway. . . so if it catches the bunnys. . . . . who cares......

Yer it happens to me ALL the time. I spend plenty of time stood in a forest listening, or walking to a high point. . . . Usually its only for ten mins, but a few times this season it's been 30 mins up to 2 hours before I've had a full head count.
-
If you do enough ferreting, you will always have digs. This season I've had days of 30-40 with hardly a dig and a couple of weeks ago 18 rabbits with 9 dug. . . a lot of times it's just luck.

Looking For Someone To Take Me Under Their Wing!!!!

I'm a wee bit confused mate, and this isn't a dig. From what I have read on here, you have some very well trained dogs. I would have thought that with a brace and a half of well trained spaniels, you would be welcome on most shoots, beating and picking up, and more I'm sure, if you were a tidy lad. In that environment, you are likely to meet folk who notice your dogs, your demeanour etc and you will most likely get some invites out shooting, working your dogs etc. What I'm trying to say, is if you have as handy dogs as you say, then it's them that will open the doors you want o -
Time of year plays a part. As the does start to belly up they get harder to bolt.

Hand feeding and firmness.

The head is often a give away lol.

It was their f***ing dog.... So how exactly would a micro chip and compulsory licence have stopped the kid getting bitten???
-
There are still dogs of the same stamp as erlandsons gwibernant / badgercourt line around if you know where to look. I'm not a fan of small, light springers, I like big strong dogs, and they will work the tightest of cover and stand a full days work. R.e rubytexs point - I agree that cockers and springers often have different working styles!

It'd be like that scene in gullivers travels with the people of lilliput! I keep getting in trouble for using their real names instead of their hip hop names. :-( I also jut got told off because I walked through the hall and a load of kids having a music lesson started banging drums and chanting Jesus!
-
Why'd you think I'm getting out of it? Sooner or later I'll put some kid through a window.
-
Ok till they run into something, which they are inclined to do.
-
I'm glad mate, mood I'm in I'd cull the whole lot of em. I'd rather stay out in the rain than talk to pint sized gangsters for a couple of hours lol
-
Yer I'll admit I'm fairly below par today. .... I'm wet, dogs are wet, pheasants are wet and the fecking quad broke down...... Oh and I've got to go and convince a 14 year old that selling crack isn't a good career choice. .... Without slapping him. You're light relief pal. Lol.

Me strange ..... I think the lady doth protest too much.... I do always enjoy the way you selectiy reply to posts, and attempt to change the tangent to allow for more attempts at mocking others.....
-
I hope you didn't have plans for the day!
-
Awwww sorry baw. Didn't mean to make you feel picked on. You just grate a bit this morning. Not had a cuppa yet. I'm sure post tea you will be returned to your usual ammusing and occasionally witty status. Don't take it to heart.

When exactly did I talk about taking on the world smart ass? All I've contributed to this thread was to point out that you have to be slightly nieve if you believe that there is no link between dog dealers and dog thefts..... As for such is life in the hunting life. Without this place you would be lost mate .... We can all see that :-)
