Hey! Not sure but i've heard from a few people that it can lead to genetic problems - there was a topic on here which was about breeding bew x bew and the silver thing came up on there (i seem to remember). Yer may well give you a shout about the hob if i have no luck finding one. If your near Bristol you should come down for a days ferreting sometime! atb Jai.

Hey All, I was hoping someone on here might be able to help me out. At the moment i'm down to working one ferret (shes a cracker tho!) and have a lot of land very close to me (and hence a lot of work). I'm looking for another ferret, preferrably a small/medium sized hob as i intend to breed from my current jill this year to replenish the team! Any colour apart from silver as i have heard that breeding two silvers together can result in problems. The ferret must be well handled and healthy and no biter as i cannot stand ferrets that are a pain in the arse to work with. I would also h

I'm down south as well - mixed bags - some pretty decent some really poor - gotta put in the miles and manage the land well - i rotate my trips round my different permissions and target certain areas, that way farms get a few weeks to recover and certain hedgerows or woodlands on farms get an even longer break. Also gotta keep a good eye out for other folk - was walking round one of my woods other day and almost fell down an unfilled dig just the way it goes i guess but if i catch them they will regret it.

Hey Man, Like everyone else said - net the hole while your still working and then ALWAYS fill it in properly - otherwise you can f**k up a good set, damage live stock and generally f**k up the countryside you enjoy walking about. As for Black rabbits there are a few possibilities - firstly as you guessed it could be an escapee (either from hutch or stately home) or result of an escapee breeding with the local populace. It could also be a 'parker' or descendent of such - this was a colored (usually black) rabbit released by old school keepers (and some still do), the idea is that you ca

Snares are a good start if you know what your doing - very cheap initial outlay and if laid well and in sufficient numbers can be very effective. Also rabbit proof fencing around an area followed by very very thorough ferreting is actually a pretty cost effective and successful method of controlling them on smaller parcels of land. -

One thing i've seen work is to stick a length of tubeing into the ground at a bit of an angle. The tube must be smooth, blocked at one end and 3 or so feet long. Chuck a dead fish down the tube and when the mink comes a long, it dives down the tube to get to the bait and then can't come back up because the tube is too steep and smooth. Then you shoot it. Ore use a cage trap baited with fish or meat. or......... get in the professionals! orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sit and wait with a 12g. Hope you get him! O yer - could use fens and a tunnel as well. (Not sure if this is

Cruel? Not neccessarily, at least no more cruel than running whippets at large dog fox or flying hh's at crows, in both situations your animal can get hurt and maybe you will walk away wishing you hadn't tried. I don't ferret for rats simply cos i'm way to attached to my ferrets and the amount of time put into them makes them too valuble to me to have one killed or badly injured hunting something i can't eat! Someone above suggests using a large hob - which can work if you are ferreting a tip or piles of wood or other rough ground or hay bales in a barn - but if your wanting them to go

I don't ferret for rats so i'm no expert - but friends who do say that nearly all ferrets will pack it in at some point after taking a few beatings, some are off it for good and some will go back after a break. However they are still good for rabbits. Some advice - read up/ask advice on ferret health/sickness/injury, buy a big bottle of antiseptic and get friendly with a local vet, ferrets can take some really nasty beatings from rats. Some get killed and i've seen a few eyeless. Many have no problems at all - it's all down to luck. have fun! Jai.

what ferrets are the best bolters ,quick bolters
Ideation replied to trisha's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
It's been pretty well summed up already - it's mostly down to personal taste - but if your looking for ferrets that bolt rabbits rather than ferrets that often kill underground then i would say avoid big hobs - they are just much better equiped to kill a rabbit very quickley underground. I mostly use small - medium sized jills - i find they can get into everywhere i need them to, get through the nets without a problem, don't get stuck but are plenty big enough to handle anything they need to. With regards to bolting rabbits - they bolt mainly due to the smell, with some older rabbits, -

Just depends on the woman doesn't it - some would just be a pain in the arse cos they don't really want to be there and some will be brilliant. I've had lots of girlfriends i wouldn't have bothered suggesting it to as they probably wouldn't have really enjoyed it and only come a long cos i'd asked - as a result they would fidget, moan and generally take all the fun out of it by just looking miserable. Started dating a new girl in may and a while ago i was off out setting some snares and she asked if she could come so i let her come a long and set a few herself. She even came out the next m

Just looking for a wee bit of help. I'm in the process of designing/building a new kennel / ferret shed / trap shed. It's going to be a large wooden shed split on half, with the back half being the dogs sleeping quarters and the front half having space to one side to build a tower type set of ferret cages and run against the wall which can be shut off into levels if needed or left as one big multi-level cage. On the other side of the front half will be space for all the usual bits and bobs, feed, snares, sticks, leads, nets etc etc etc and a wee chair for me perch myself on when i want to hide
