  1. If you only need two ferrets get two jills, or one jill and a castrated hob.
  2. You can find out most of this stuff by having a search on this forum. With regards to what gear you will need there is a very handy post in the frequently asked questions section which gives a very good general kit list. A Jill is a female ferret and a Hob is a male ferret. The differences are (apart from the obvious) that hobs usually grow larger and can be more aggressive (not to you if handled). Most people use jills and a pair of jills is a very good place to start. Many people do use hobs very successfully for ferreting, including castrated and vascectimised hobs. atb Jai.
  3. I wasn't being funny but there is a huge thread on the next page or so which pretty much argues every point for or against the working whippet and also includes huge numbers of pics. Its about Mike Browns dogs. The end result was. Whippets = Ace. atb. jai.
  4. Yer thats what i found. I dont get lay ups, but sometimes the wee jill comes across one she cant shift and hangs about giving it a bit of stick and yer then i can dig it out. But in general i dont get the locator out unless the ferret has been down a stupidly long time as i prefer to crouch quietly and not be moving about so im sure i miss plenty i could have dug to. But then again i dont like to dig unless absolutely necessary so maybe its better to resist the temptation and not look. For me the finder is a tool to use when they just dont come back up, say after 15-20 mins i pop it out an
  5. They are usually near or in cover, such as hedge rows, woodland, bramble patches, base of large trees etc. You do also get ground sets (sets in the open) in some types of landscape. First stop should be the hedges tho - always sets there. . . . just hope they aint hawthorn! atb jai.
  6. Mate - search whippets in search bar.
  7. I agree with you up to a point - i ferreted for years without using a locater and my dad never had one his whole life (not around) and never lost a ferret underground. We were probably lucky, but when a ferret didnt come up we just sat and waited. HOWEVER - they are available now and yer 90% of the time its not needed - everything goes on as normal, but it does mean that i can rest safe in the knowledge that if sopmething DOES happen - i can dg them out. One question tho - anyone noticed a difference in how the ferrets work, with and without collars? atb Jai.
  8. Thats just plain stupid. Or maybe your right - all people who own bull x's are professional dog men. . . . . and every man who owns a collie cross just has it cos it looks pretty and none of them are good workers. Generalisations are retarded. jai.
  9. Nice - can't resist the racism Bet that makes us look like a nice group of people! Well done on the coons dan! Another good read! atb jai.
  10. Everyday when i drive home i pass through some Z bends near me that pass through a pretty decent sized bit of woodland which is attached to a few fields. The wood is many times larger than the fields and stuffed with rabbits. I have permission to ferret the land that runs along two sides of the woodland. The wood and fields seem to belong to the people who live in a big house which has an electronic gate and long drive (the house is huge). I've always fancied a go through the woods but have been put off from asking by the look of the house. Anyway - i was driving home from work and had a p
  11. I like them all! I got a silver, looks part badger! Cost exactly the same as every other ferret. atb jai.
  12. Depends what you want it to do - but i'd agree with above - either a whippet or small lurcher - and collie / beddy x's are some of the best. That dog should be able to mark, bush and catch and you also have a dog you can use on its own! atb jai.
  13. The idea that hungry ferrets work better is a myth as far as i have experienced. This is for a number of reasons - a) They are more likely to seek food and so kill and feed and possibly even lie up. But at best you waste time. They have less energy and so work slower and with less go, they are in fact more likely to back off a rabbit. c) How badly your ferret wants to eat has little effect on how the rabbits bolt. They mostly bolt from the smell and presence of the ferret in the set, not because they have been beaten / driven out by the ferret and most ferrets will hunt rabbits by inst
  14. This is about the 10th post this month that marvels at the breeding rate of rabbits . . .. . . . yes 'they breed like rabbits'. Fascinating
  15. Yer i feed mine a good bit in the eve before and then in the morning they get a light snack of a bit of raw meat and maybe some egg and plenty of water. I usually also take water with me and offer them a drink throughout the day if its going to be a long one - that way they stay fresh and dont waste time looking for a drink when down. I also sometimes give them small mouthfuls of meat occaisionaly during the day, especially after they have bolted a decent number from a set. However the amounts must be literally a taste as you dont want to make them sleepy!
  16. I'd agree with that! Looks a bit like the 'Norfolk' type.
  17. Dont mess with that mans ferret!
  18. NO I WOULDNT START DIGGING. IVE ONLY GOT JILLS SO I DONT THINK THEY WOULD STAY. Fair enough . . . not sure if i deserve the finger! There are just a lot of idiots on here who'd probably leave a ferret if it seemed like too much hard work digging it out. But your right - i use jills and they mostly come back to me because they get bored with dead rabbits
  19. You'd give up if it was 4 feet?
  20. Nice looking dog - worth a trip to see it work. Check it isnt a yapper!
  21. Sam, bet you there are lurcher men living near you there, lads who dont advertise the fact not like a lot of the type you mentioned, i dont know maybe its me but i love the course much more than the kill but that seems to have all changed now in the lurcher world now Too true! The blokes you are talking about are usually doing it somewhere their not meant to be. . . . they dont really live for the hunt - they live for the kill and the picture they can show their mates / post on a forum! Its really sad, they bring a bad name upon us and take too much game too loudly. And yes the
  22. You hit the nail on the head mate. Yes, people still do it but now that smokers are readily available they are a far better alternative to getting your ferrets knocked about for something you can't eat. I hate rats. In fact i would go so far as to say its a borderline phobia. Whenever they are near i can be found standing VERY near my jrt. atb jai.
