All of the above. For daylight shooting dusk and dawn are best - this is when they are out feeding. Obviously they mainly feed out at night so with a lamp you will see a lot. atb Jai.

Where you from Chimp? (Roughly) atb Jai.

Same in all the sections here these days pal.... Would have to agree with both of you. It's one thing giving advice when asked and another TELLING folk there's only one way to do something. You missed the boat pal. Your a bit late with your criticism. It's been said and i apologised. Also it IS an open forum and i was expressing an opinion (all be it like an angry dick head) Chimp - do you have no friends who would appreciate a kit or two from your good working line? atb Jai.

Actually he said he needed to reduce rabbits to keep permission. So its not a job its preserving the ability to hunt the land. I just wondered what he was going to hunt after gassing the rabbits. Im HONESTLY not trying to cause an argument. Obviously gassing is obviously MORE efficient however the need to be licenced and buy the gas and also seeing as he is asking on a forum what to use and how to use it im guessing he isnt experianced or confident in its use and it IS a poisned gas. . . . .needs to be considered. atb Jai.

Aye man just put PLENTY of time into her and she will come good. You can also use 'Beaphar' Vitamin/Malt paste which you can get on the net or from 'Pets at home etc' its for cats and ferrets and is a multi-vitamin and anti hairball paste which the love like the ferretone. It comes in a tube and is a paste and so sometimes a bit easier to work with. I use both for different situation and give the paste everyday for general health. (I'm a wee bit ferret obsessed - when they are kits a do ALOT of hand feeding so they get stupidly tame and obsessed). atb Jai.

Didnt i get deleted and ignored for suggesting this? All i was saying is that the guy was worried about loosing the permission to hunt rabbits if he didnt gas them all which i thought was kind of counter logical. But maybe i'm mising something - ferreting (in season) is efficient, safe and cheap as well as FUN. Sorry if i upset you Andrew. Jai.

Not so much a problem for daytime hunting he just needs a while to get to grips with whats going on. A bit of a headache if your lamping however. Jai.

How old is she mate - most of my ferrets are a bit mental around the 8 month mark to 1 year - they do the ferret war dance, rag my socks, climb my leg and bite at my hand- however if i put my hand down they rattle their teeth at it but dont actually bite. They are just playing! Yes they look like they are having a melt down but they are just happy. They settle down. Do all the handling like i said, try the tubes and use some ferretone on your hand so your hand is a wonderous tasty thing (to lick not bite) and you should be fine, Also i have a wee silver jill here who is just about 1 - she

Hey Matey, First things frist - handle her lots and have her on the floor when your walking around and doing stuff so she gets used to running about your feet and being picked up. Also get some tubes for her to run through of a decent length and spend time letting her run through them and picking her up when she comes out - dont snatch her but do it calmy and gently but firmly if that makes sense, or rather with confidence. This way you will avoid skulking around the hole later. You can also drae a net over the ends of the tubes so she gets used to coming through the mesh. When you

Have you tried her retrieving dead rabbits? Starting with a skin covered dummy and then maybe lamping with an air rifle. Get her used to picking up still warm, rabbits and she may get used to the idea, then try her on a few squatters and work from there . . . . Jai.
-
Have you tried running her with a more experianced dog so that she sees it pick up and gets the idea, i have come across this problem before and it was rapidly sorted once the dog saw another dog do the pick up - it just seemed to click. You could also try ferreting some rabbits into purse nets and send her to hold/pick them up. However its the wrong time of year for ferreting. Jai.

still trying to find the right x for me

What pup - i'm intrigued? Jai. -
sounds good advice.will be following that.just have to keep her away from me permision.its crawlin with em.there really not nervous at all and are getting out right into the feilds in daylight.so walked up squatters on lamp come season wont be any trouble.better get me self couple of jills.cheers agaim.atb.mat. Sounds ideal mate. Enter her nice and slow and steady, build her confidence with early success and by the end of next season i bet your having A LOT of fun! and yes - ferrets are ALWAYS a great idea! Jai.

if u use droppers your a lesser man what does that mean I mean its disrespectful to your quarry and just a lazy substitute for putting in the effort and having the fieldcraft to walk up a nice sitter out in the field on a good windy, rainy night to give your dog its first tastes of success, or taking the dog ferreting and letting it pin a few in the nets. Dropping rabbits from a sack for your dogs is the kind of thing the Greyhound lads do, its wrong and it gives us a bad name. jmo Jai.
-
SHe'll be just the right age come start of season - so wait till then and take her ferreting - let her pin a few in the nets and get the feel of a rabbit in the mouth, then gove her a few good walked up ones - real close in open. If you use droppers - your a lesser man. jmo Jai.

The problem is though, some people dont leave it alone until they get fedup of going home empty handed & usually dont have permission anyway.Obviously have too much time on thier hands. If the farmer wants you to thin them out during the summer because crops are being eaten away then theres not allot you can do about that, its a job that has tobe done. But thats a different thing alltogether. i have to go in the sumer or i will lose my permisson,i go on a big liver yerd and they just [bANNED TEXT] them gone for good so it is a must that i go in sumer Thats a fair point in a few

Not all young lads are like it. I didn't actually realise people DID hunt in summer until i was quite old. To me that was just the way it was - rabbiting/foxing etc in winter and fishing in summer. I wonder if these lads actually like nature and respect animals. I actually REALLY like rabbits and especially like the first couple of months of the season when we visit permissions for the first few trips and are having super hectic days of 50-100 with the ferrets and then same in evening with dogs. The sadest fact now is that most of the folk who keep running dogs ARE dickheads. Matcho, smal

Should be ok if you hold her back a bit untill shes around the 10 month mark then give her some easy runs. It's when they yap whilst chasing that your f*cked cos that means they already think they wont catch and are frustrated and then it just becomes a habit. atb Jai.

I usually make sure i'm dressed half smart and go up to the farm/house and just knock the door and ask. I'm polite and articulate and generally friendly. I usually mention the other permissions i have in the area. Also i find its best to start by asking to ferret and then asking if you bring the dogs during the day and work up to lamping and shooting. I also usually go out of my way to lend a hand with and jobs that need doing and make sure i drop of rabbits, trout and birds when they want one. I also never suggest i'm doing them a favour. So far i have 1000's of acres and no one has ever

Hello, SOrry guys i was in a foul mood this morning and the tone of what i had written was a little extreme and negative. I was just talking about the uneccessary desire to take all your kits out and take photos of them on their day of birth. However i concede that it is each to their own and many people do this and no kits are killed. However i don't think it should be promoted as good practice, as although YOUR jill may be fine with it many are not no matter how well handled and its not good to encourage people into something that could risk kits. This change in otherwise friendly jills

Sickening. How many rabbits and where abouts - i guarantee someone would sort them for you and that way you wouldn't be wasting all that meat. Jai.
-
Yes basiclly the rabbits remove all competition for nutrients and light etc from above their burrows by eating and pissing on them. All that will grow is stingy nettles. Jai.

Everyones having kits at the moment and everyones getting them out, gawking and handling them and taking photos to put on here. We know what they look like when they are born, they all look the same. STOP F*CKING ABOUT WITH THE KITS! It's rule number one and i don't understand why so many folk find it hard. LEAVE THE JILL AND KITS A LONE OR SHE MAY KILL AT LEAST SOME. Especially don't touch them as they will very quickly lose their natural smell and smell of you. Also they pick up disease etc very easily now so that another good reason to LEAVE THEM THE F*CK ALONE! They stay blind for 5 weeks.

Yer and to be fair if your doing a decent job in winter then there are not too many now. Jai.
