  1. dont use one now lol but as i said i used to when i was a kid never had any mishaps in using one though Aye mate i've used one in the past but now i just couldnt do it - cos one day it would happen.
  2. when i was a kid we used to take our border along with us and he did pretty well, obviously couldn't catch over a long chase very easily but was smart and sharp enough to pin bolters, hold rabbits in the net, mark etc. He could tell the difference between a rabbit and a sheep. Its just how you bring any dog on.
  3. Wait till you fall on your bag. Then you'll feel like a right c**t.
  4. Aye if you can't tell your ferrets apart then you don't handle them enough. You sure its not harmless for ferrets?
  5. At 8 weeks old i dont mind a bit of biting - its natural, but there is a difference between siting happily sitting on my and having a good old chew and biting because they dont like being handled. If i'm buying rather than breeding then i will look for someone who has a litter bred from two tried and tested workers who are both very hand tamed and good at their job, basically two ideal ferrets. I would also prefer to buy from someone who has had the line for sometime, preferably at least ten years, with 3 or more generations being worked. Looking at the kits they should all be active, healthy,
  6. Aye i'd go for a lab, i like springers but in tidal waters and with big fowl a lab has that bit more muscle to get the job done.
  7. Once you have some - more follows. I am now lucky enough to have 1000's of acres of good land, most of which i don't share. Funnily enough no one has ever said no. . . . . .
  8. AYe rugs are a good one, so are slippers, hats, gloves. The girlfriend made a nice cloak once - bit impractical but quite cool.
  9. Ask a local shoot - they gotta get rid of their spare game. Or speak to local butchers - many also deal game etc.
  10. Yep - one of my fave quarry. My best is about 50 in a three day weekend.
  11. I just have a quiet mooch about, you either see them before they see you or if you are quick they spot you, run up a tree and then pause. Then you shoot them. Terrier could scare em before you spot them and also if it has never tackled a squirral before . . . they bite.
  12. the one one the right is by far the best with a good solid mask and dark nose, are they crossed with hybrid? Don't you mean 'best looking' and 'in your opinion' cos to be fair whilst having a dark face it could be a useless, nippy b*****d? At the moment folk seem to think the darker the more likely to be a good worker. Perhaps this is because they look more like wild polecats? Well my best worker is an albino - about as far from a wild polecat as possible. And the female kit i just picked up has very light markings.
  13. There is a special dance to the gods but we won't tell you how to do it until you stick my hob 'crusher' down your pants?
  14. Both crackers mate and the bitch is a real stunner. Looks like she had saluki and maybe some beddy or wheaton? Anyhow looks like she will be VERY handy.
  15. Wolfhound wouldn't stand a chance against these lads - the wolfhound was made for hunting the eurasian wolf which is much smaller, lighter and less aggressive. The wolves that killed those dogs were timber wolves as the post above mentions. A wolfhound might put up a wee fight but against more than one would quickly get pulled apart. The major issue is that the denning sites are kept quiet from the hunters which leads to unfortunate meetings.
  16. One of the easiest permissions to get mate. No one likes rats.
  17. Building foundations for new ferret court!

aye building a framework then filling it full of concrete to make a hard standing. Should be 10 x 4 foot which additional extra bits!

  18. I don't like to leave ferrets collared up - not safe. Shave a bit between shoulder blades or on tail.
  19. Look at the guy. . . . he's clearly troubled. He also doesn't actually show the pups much considering they are 6 months old. Would be interesting to see them work. Maybe we are missing something - one of them drives his motor, one holds the lamp, theres a couple out in the field running game and the spare bitches are up telegraph poles watching out for the keeper/farmer? O and they make a good cup of tea.
  20. Perhaps not easily - it's amazing what knocks they can take and get back up and keep running but they are certainly more likely to endure an injury as a working running dog than as a pet. The main injurys are collisions resulting from being close on the back of the rabbit and hitting a tree stump/fence post/tree/dyke wall/dry stone wall/farm machinery/other dog/rock etc at pace. Due to the drive of the working animals their saftey is usually the last thig on their mind. The best of these result in cuts and the worst in dead dogs. Most folk who have been at it years are unlucky enough to lose o
