If You Could Pick Anybody To Go For A Pint With...
Ideation replied to GaZMaN888's topic in General Talk
I've been thinking on this, and genuinely, right now it'd be my grandfather on my dads side. A lot has happened in the three years since he'd passed away, and i'd love to show him the dogs now, and some of the things i'm doing and pick his brains. He'd be in his element with some of it. And he told the most fascinating stories i've ever listened to, having spent the 1930's-50's living and hunting in India, Nepal etc. -
Yer, the photo of the eggs isn't the best, but they are a hybrid made up of leg bar and some other bits, solid layers and nice blue eggs, folk like them even though they taste the same. And yup, it's boar semen, from Ireland, and at some point this weekend i'll be attempting to inseminate a saddelback sow with it If it works, should through some great weaners at the end of summer, to run on for meat over winter, should be a nice covering of fat, but not too much, good flavour and a better carcass conformation that a straight saddleback, so bigger chops, joints etc. And good sausage

Forgot to say there was a bit of bird in the first one, think it was one of last years cockerels

Aye, i've pretty much only been eating duck eggs, been getting five a day from five ducks Edited to add - but those blue eggs are chicken eggs Those bottles, are part of my breeding programme

Had some good eating the last couple of nights, all with stuff that was either home grown, caught, scavenged or swopped. All from within a mile or so. Had a bbq yesterday, with a load os sausages, beef and venison. Some home made coleslaw, and curried potatoes. Good times. Home alone tonight so chipped the rest of the potatoes, finished the coleslaw and chucked another steak and some eggs in the mix.

Moved the geese into their new home today. First night the traps down and had a bite . . Been getting plenty of nice eggs. And the next part of the grand plan arrived today . . . .

From what I know . . . . some of the litter are used to hunt anything that moves, and others have gone to single species packs.

Do You Wash Your Lurcher After Every Outting?
Ideation replied to Minsterhunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Apart from soaking their feet sometimes, and washing obvious dirt, shit or blood off them . . . no. But r.e. the smell thing - I've got dogs in both kennels and the house, and they get no different washing treatment, and the ones in the house smell better than those in the kennels. . . or do they? Maybe we just get used to their smell? Out of all of them, the hound is the most smelly, and the whippet the least. . . . and they are the most an least hairy, so that's probably the answer. It's all ok though, because I smell of dog, so I never notice. -
Aye, I pulled that 'retro' ironing board out of the scrap pile mate, before I weighed a load of it in. They like it as a perch and it makes me smile. And yep, got two pick up canopies as pig arks so far, a long with a metal one I blagged from the estate (ex wild boar ark) and two wooden ones i've made, so it's saved me a few quid. Most things i've been using have been reclaimed, recycled or just blagged. . . . or donated by awesome folk.

Tell me how to make one and i'll do it, sounds like a grand idea. Been tinkering around in the sun today, getting a few plants out, got some chills, some greens and some strawberries out, and got some other stuff in the greenhouse I need to stick out soon. Also stuck some raspberry canes in. Did a bit of tidying up, some clearing and sorted out an IBC until I can get the water reconnected. Been enjoying watching the ducks, they are real characters. Did a bit of a head count when I fed everything this evening, and realised we've got 10 pigs, 6 ducks, 8 chickens, 3 geese an

For The Lads Who Keep Pigs
Ideation replied to Rat face's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
I've kept a few pigs of different types. I think what's the 'best' just like anything else, depends on what you like. I reckon some do make better bacon pigs and some better porkers, but again it depends what you like. I think that the traditional breeds have the best flavour, and make the best sausages, and best bacon etc, because they have more fat, and a richer taste. But you can get them too fat. The modern breeds such as the pie train and the duroc, are usually used as terminal sires, for meat production, as they give great conformity, bigger chops etc, leaner meat. I thin -
f**k that, i've got a gangster whippet.

Look like bunny enough pups. Worth about 50 quid max, as a large breed pet for someone.

If you know your dog, you know when its ready to go.

Isnt This Sad.something Needs To Be Done And Fast
Ideation replied to jigsaw's topic in General Talk
Its terrible, and all to common. Also, I believe that the farmer gets compensation? And that compensation comes from the government, so ultimately the tax payer - well, 38,000 cows has to be over 30,000,000 quids worth. . . . . -
Just looks like a variation of sandy to me, seen big ginger looking hobs before, just like with albinos you get everything from white to piss yellow It's ferret coloured.
-
Sounds pretty good to me mate, what kind of sheep do you keep out of interest?
-
Done!
-
Well mate . . . . .we'll get some more permission from a farmer one way or another. . . . . even if i've got to become a farmer to do it Got to ring David tomorrow and have a chat about hole digging, this rain has been a b*****d! Oh yer. . . . pulled up this morning and there was a rabbit munching on my grass!
-
Sounds great matey Yer, with sheep it's all about range, as long as you can keep moving them onto fresh grass, your grass recovers well enough. It's when you keep them on land too long you get problems. I'd love to get back to how it was when I was younger, but my old man gave up all his grazing, and now, round here, rented grazing is hard to come by, with all of the horsey folk, willing to pay stupid money for it split into wee bits. But i'll keep my eyes and ears open, as I reckon if I could get the right land to rent at the right place, I could make a tidy enough wage out of sh

Well, I wasn't planning on 100 sheep mate. And I certainly wouldn't keep 100 on 30 acres year round. If I go back to keeping sheep, i'd just be starting small for a bit of meat for friends and family. If I was planning to farm them commercially, i'd be looking for lots of rented grazing, and looking to only feed grass, and lamb out. But at the moment i'm keeping a few pigs and a few chooks on three acres . . . . so I think taking over the world of sheep farming may need to wait until next year.
-
Hope it works well for you matey If I don't break even. . . . . i'll give up the pigs A good time ago we used to farm sheep, foot and mouth put an end to it. It'll be nice if I manage to get back to it one day

Yes mate, plenty, give me a bell, i've been meaning to call you, but been hectic as feck
