Litter brother and sister to above dog.

Modelling her rave gear in the summer lol.

Cheers mate. Scanned the sheep the other day, 3 triplets, 25 twins, 12 singles, 3 empty. Going to be busy, mid april, I think. The collies training is coming on well, and she's starting to work sheep, albeit a bit hard at times (so keeping away from the pregnant lot). Also got a batch of pigs to go off to slaughter in the next few weeks, and they are looking great! Should be some really tasty pork and sausages.
-
I won't be mate, unless we get five years down the line and she's still doing it lol. But maybe i'll just buy her a spade and she can make a proper job of it.
-
That she is mate. I've made the decision she's not going anywhere. We'll either sort it or we won't, but I'll stick with her. Worst case, I just forget the rabbits with her!

Just thought i'd stick up a couple of photos of the bitch in question from today. Still trying a few different things, managed to get her a good night out and a fair bit of fur in her mouth thanks to the kindness of a member on here. She still did her party trick, although there was a glimmer of hope toward the end when she just stood in the middle of the field with her catch, rather than burying it straight away lol. Working on the tug training etc. We'll see how it goes!

Sheep Killers.. Shoot Them Or School Them
Ideation replied to Landrace's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
A farmer can legally shoot your dog if it is seen inflicting damage upon stock, and reasonable means have been taken to stop it. I.e shouting at it, calling it off etc. A guy I know ends up having to shoot a dog a week in the summer. He farms on the Romney Marshes and it's riddled with dog walkers in the summer months. Don't think he's ever had to shoot a hunting dog. Usually he turns up when the dog is pulling down sheep, asks owners to call it off (who can't), so informs them he has to shoot it. After he informs the police and no dramas occur. -
Sheep Killers.. Shoot Them Or School Them
Ideation replied to Landrace's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Big difference between a dog that chases sheep one time and a sheep killer. My dogs are broke to sheep, and two out of three have chased them, on a couple of occasions. Most times, it's a case of mistaken identity and running on the sound. Usually leads to a pull up, and looking scared! But once when young the whippet pulled one over, by its fleece. After a swift beating he was back in with sheep straight away, once chance. Didn't repeat that trick. But I wouldn't trust any dog, in the wrong situation, blood up, under worked, over excited etc etc, up pops a lamb, and bang. . . . A -

I'd say that the Exlana are bigger ewes, and with better conformation, quite how they perform differently we will see, but so far both have impressed me. The Exlana came from the south of England, the Easycare came of a hill locally. The Exlana have also been brutally culled lol. And yep . . . that thought has crossed my mind.
-
Yep they are Exlana mate, good sheep, so far at least. The shedding tup is an easy care, as the exlana tups were a bit pricey for this year lol. I used the Charmoise on the ewe lambs, with the hope that they should come out easy enough, seeing as we're lambing out. Should produce tidy fat lambs as well. Half trained a young collie bitch to go with them as well, which has been fun.

Probably should do a bit of an update sometime. I've rationalised things a bit. We have a barn down the field. The two saddleback sows are living back outside now the weather is picking up, and we have 11 growers from the last litter, all about 50-60 kilo now, in a paddock with access to the barn. We've got a selection of poultry in one run. But the sheep have become the main focus. I've ended up with about 50 acres of year round grazing and another 20 of winter keep, with more looking likely. This year we are lambing forty odd outside in April. Fingers crossed it goes ok, and hope

Just seen this, some of the smaller ones are Easycares, most of the rest are another shedding hybrid. There are about 50 here now. Half are docked, the other half not. And yep i'll be docking mine. Hopefully everything is in lamb. Some to a maternal tup (the big white one) and others to the two tup lambs you pointed out, Charmoise. Will be scanning the ewes next week.

Bull was used to make up the modern greyhound was it not . . . .

Darcy - It's funny you mention that, the only time she has been doubled up on a rabbit was accidentally with the whippet, he caught it and she mugged him double quick and legged it back to me, straight into my hand. I think, probably for the reason you mentioned. Usually she is out there with a rabbit in her mouth and then there is me, with some other strange bloke and dog stood near me . . . . . . Malc - I am sorry mate, I've not really been on here till now, i've PM'd you. Zerky - Yes I have with her mate, and I do hope it works out or i'll have the nutter burying rabbits for the ne

That's not a bad idea. I might try legging it in the opposite direction when she catches one, even if she isn't worried about losing me, she'll probably think i'm chasing something more exciting, and might join in (hopefully with rabbit in mouth). Although I have a feeling she will just bury the rabbit quicker and then catch up, she's smart. But its worth a try. Just for the record, I have not taken her out on the lamp for a bit, only ferreting to see if she was the same. Not been out on rabbits at all since last week. I've been trying all sorts, lots of 1:1 time, tug training, cassos

Some great posts and help on this thread, thank a lot and keep it coming. I think if this does get fixed, it will be a long old road. At least she is still ok on other stuff. Thanks for the detailed explanation Casso, i'm going to try to implement it. Yesterday was the first day of hand feeding and it took quite a lot for the bitch to eat her biscuits out of my hand, meat is fine. I'll try adding the resistance in the next couple of days.

OK, now i'm not against poaching and have done enough over the years. But when trying to work with a dog that's disappearing into the darkness to hide rabbits, I don't really want to be driving hours and going blind onto land that may be hot. Different if the dog was acting well and just didn't have the game in front of it. It's weird mate i've tried the treat route etc, I can be as nicey nicey as I like, even standing next to her, while she is nosing grass over the rabbit, and all she does is try to get it done quicker, in order to revert to normal and come to me, get the treat
-
Thanks for the advice and keep it coming, there is a lot to think about there. Casso, I have decided to go back to doing a lot more tug stuff, rather than straight retrieving and to also feed her by hand from now on. Also taking her out with the gun, to make myself more a part of the kill / catch. And will be taking a couple of folk on here up on their offers of nights / days out. Joe - both of those things are very likely reality.
-
My best advice would be, get her out spotting first, and then wait for the right rabbit, its worth it in the long run.
-
Giro yes mate, very good offers. And yes, very frustrating, she's a funny f****r, but work wise was coming on a treat and hadn't put a foot wrong. I only want her as a lamp dog really, and if I can't run her on rabbits it eliminates a large amount of my sport, and reduces the work she can have. A lot of what has been said has gone through my mind in one form or another. Ive only taken her ferreting in the last week, a couple of times. Up till then she had only ever walked out with my lot in the day and lamped and lamed a lone for the first few months, until I decided that the lack

I'm on phone so short reply, but thank you very much Torchey that would be hugely appreciated. I will PM you. Rob - I understand what you are getting at but it wasn't just us that killed them off. It's been unfortunate, a large amount was destroyed in last years great flood and everything local got annihilated by VHd including the 2000 acres I work on. It's heartbreaking. Other members have seen it before and since. I've always done my best to control rather than wipe out and protect my sport.
-
If that is a genuine offer, can you Pm me. I would certainly be game for taking the dog away and trying to get her sorted. I don't think anywhere round here I could safely take her on my own and put her on a good amount of rabbits.
