If it's me, and I think it's a good rabbit, i'll keep the lamp on it, when the dog is young, walk up, pulling the dogs head up, getting it to look, and only slip when the rabbits jumps up. It takes a while for most dogs to click to squatters. . . . my young bitch is still learning and has the habit of standing near them looking confused, whereas the older dog can be sent on a squatter from a hell of a distance. . . . it's just practice and experience.

Views On Shooting Foxes When Cubs Are About?
Ideation replied to slipper's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just for the record, if I shot a milky vixen around my stock, chances are I would know where to look for the cubs, as I take pride in knowing the land, the wildlife and its ways. . . . and they would get dealt with. -
Views On Shooting Foxes When Cubs Are About?

If it's bothering no one and you are just shooting it for the sake of shooting something . . . . . . not my scene at all. If it's eating my lambs. . . . . . or near enough to . . . . KILL IT!!!!! -
White Fallow Deer In The Forest Of Dean Today

Yer, we see a fair few but shhhhhhhhhh -
Question? Would it be more or less frightening, if the guy had been Islamic, and it made some kind of sick, twisted, sense?

I did.

Wales Pelenna Valley Foxhounds
Ideation replied to old dog's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Aye, it's the best show. I'll be travelling down again. Will probably camp the night before out on the dunes lol. -
I've found my ducks lay better than my chickens. Ending up with half a dozen duck eggs, selection of chicken / bantam eggs and a goose egg most days now. The dogs are even getting sick of them!

Farts come from the arse of an animal or person. Why would you ever expect them to smell anything other than bad?

That's a bit shitty to be honest mate(don't want a row though ),the sheep ain't the ones that did you harm and it would have gone in your favour if you had called him out as he'd know he was proper wrong about you and the dogs. Yer I have to admit, I did feel really sorry for the sheep. . . as i'm an animal lover. . . .and for the record, I did watch (my house over looks the land) and kind of know what time they check their sheep, so saw them pick it up and take it back to the yard. But my point is, I usually wouldn't even hesitate to do something to help my neighbours, and drop anyth

Riohog - Aye that sounds about right! Joe - I really like the little black book / terminal illness back up plan.

I know what you are saying mate. . . . . and i'm in two minds. I won't get all arsey and show off. But I can't decide if I'm best carrying on as normal and trying to prove them wrong or cutting them all out totally and just keeping to myself. My worry is for the dogs safety!.

In all honesty what could you get from a sapling trial?only the basics, any half bred mongrel will show basics at 18 months of age,few of them will show anything like their breeding until at least their second season, the best of mutts seldom come into their own until they have had at least 3 seasons under them.Ill agree that a youngster may show promise at 18 months, promise is often a veil many mutts hide assunder. I suppose it depends what has been said of the dog. It's a bit of a blind area for me as I have never bought an adult running dog. If i'd been told that it was just

It's also sad. . . . but sooner or later, maybe someone will realise that it's a two way street. I was going down the road on the quad today. . . . . saw a ewe down in the field. Looked like Twin Lamb disease. . . . needed a jab of calcium and a drench of ketosaid. Normally i'd have jumped off and either phoned farmer and told him, or down it myself and let him know. This time I just kept driving . . . . . f**k em. And next time there is a call to sort out a fox taking lambs, some rabbits eating the wheat, rats etc. They can sort it out themselves. And the local pub can get t'f**k if t

Couple of things - Why not trial an 18 month old dog? Depends what has been said of it? I.e If it's seen anything at all. But i'd at least want to know it isn't a stock killer etc. We are not talking about trying to catch a bag full with it! Secondly - Met a few dogs who just thought their new owner was a knob at first . . . . . . and wouldn't work for them. Knew of a terrier that would not go to ground for new owner at all. . . .. as soon as original owner showed up to be shown problem. . . . . . dog flew to ground!

This world is falling apart.

Aye, but unfortunately it seems that when you keep lurchers, most of the time, folk are just waiting for it to turn out that ACTUALLY you are a wrong un and your dogs are the spawn of hell. Probably doesn't help that our sport is so full of idiots. . . . . but in your own community, after 30 years . . . . . you'd think folk would have kind of accepted you weren't a twat. When I rang the farmer . . . . I was honest . . . . . how many sheep did you have maimed / hurt? None he said. Well you've seen my dogs. . . . . now if they had been loose on their own worrying your sheep. . . . . would th

RH - Sussex - No, I have my own ears about the place now. . . . i'll find out soon enough. I've narrowed it down to a few people. What sucks, is at least one of them, I thought I got on with well.

Peter - I farm 50 ewes myself, going up to 100 this year hopefully. I've also just finished keeping somewhere which has 100's of the bloody things. My dogs don't chase sheep . . . . . and anyone in their right mind should know that. But I AM tempted to go into the pub car park, pen up a dozen of my ewes there, and stick the dogs in the pen and see which c**t wants to come and say something. RH - I seriously hope it isn't, because if so, it might bring out my vindictive streak, and unfortunately the amount of damage I could do would be horrendous. I'd rather not, because i'm genera

Brilliant news . . . . and yes. . . that IS sarcasm! Got a phone call earlier from a farm manager on a big local farm. . . . . . "I heard your dogs have been chasing and attacking xxx's sheep". . . . . . . "everyone in the village is talking about you / your dogs. . . . . i'd watch where you go, a few folk are gunning for them, no one tolerates stock worriers around here". Fecking great. Funny thing is . . . . I spoke to the farmer in question earlier, he is satisfied that my dogs were no where near his sheep, and in fact no dogs were, and no sheep had been chased or harmed. But th

Aye, hopefully it'll get sorted, and i'd happily show anyone my dogs amongst sheep. But what really gets to me, is that folk I know would take someones word out of the blue, over the common sense, based upon knowing me for years and years.

I think it also depends quite what you use the dog for (or would in a hypothetical world), whether you see the addition of collie as a useful thing or not. I run down the saluki blood in my bitch quite a lot, but really, its pretty damn handy, so is the bull blood, and so is the collie blood. . . . . . . With regard to collies not liking teeth, or being eye dogs, yep, for the most part thats probably very true, but then there are different types, my young collie bitch is a really steady, calm dog most of the time, but will happily face down, chase, and grab / bully round a sheep that is mu

Aye, some very astute answers here! For the record, I also farm some sheep, and work with sheep all of the time. Up till now its been widely accepted that my dogs are sheep proof. . . . . . % of the places I lamp are sheep farms.

Couple of things - Jm and DF - I really like, respect and have a lot of time for bull blooded dogs, both using a bit of bull in a mixed breed lurcher, and as a 'proper' bull x. Yes I probably did generalise by saying 'most'. . . . I know it certainly isn't all, i know plenty of very well bred and very good bull x's. . . . . however there is more shite in the breed than a lot of others, probably due to their fashionable status. Also I would not equate 'effort' put into a run with 'fire;, I think the latter is more about what happens when they get to their quarry, or when the chips are down.
-
That's the thing - whoever phoned them must be someone local and respected. I live in a very rural area, not a lot of folk would know who farmed those fields, and also know me. SO there is a fairly short list of folk it could be. . . . . and for them to react like that it has to be someone trusted. I do understand, they have had a few problems in the last few years with dogs, cos there are a few families of 'in-comers' who have moved from the city to the country and brought their shit eating stock killing dogs. They are also quite old, and I guess they have just got wound up. . . . . but someo
