Interesting, I knew it was pointer, bull and grey but was told by some Aussies that they used some sal blood for the feet and heat tolerance. Obviously that could just be them!

Secret Filming Alleges Illegal Foxhunting
Ideation replied to Joe1888's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Surprised there's been nowt on here about my mates pack. Last sat the antis called the hounds across the dual and a very good bitch was hit by an artic. b*****ds. -
First I wanted to be an explorer. Then wanted to be a farmer, then an auctioneer and then a vet. Was put off the farming by my mum, going on that there'd be no money. . . . . . don't know why I never tried the auctioneering, and did do work experience as a vet. . . . and the people put me right off! Managed a good crack at being an explorer though! Worked as a life guard, ran a record label, ran a club, was a teacher, a researcher, ran a guesthouse / back packers hostel. Broke the law and made more money than any of the others put together. Ended up counselling kids a

And that would be at around 12-18 months plus I think. . . . . ?

My mate (who is on here) has a russel x whippet dog. It's got to be around 22", and just looks like any other whippets lurcher. Its very capable, and will easily catch rabbits on the lamp or bolting daytime, and plenty of other things besides. I think the dog may be a bit of an anomaly but if you could breed them all like that they'd be grand.

Good points - Hardy, look after themselves, easy lambing, good feet, don't eat much, live on poor grazing, few medical issues, good mothers, nice to look at. Bad points - Twats to gather in unless you bucket train them, don't flock when worked with a dog, small carcass, don't 'finish' till hoggets, no value in the market. Interestingly the meat is more akin to venison I've found.

Its really interesting with the Garmins, looking at what you have done and what the dogs have done, and also comparing individual dogs. If whilst mooching you're getting some good hunts and runs, they can do far more than you. On an average 2 hour walk, with no spectacular hunts, just the odd blast after something put up, going out to maybe 500m away at the furthest point, they regularly do 12-15km.

Probably cheaper than 2 taxis!

Because I would imagine that 99% of salukis in the U.K are not a patch on those found doing those kind of quarry in Tajikistan. And because a bull blooded dog is a damn sight easier to enter with out screwing things up! And because we breed a ridiculous amount of absolute shite in the u.k I mean. . . . . lets be realistic. . . . there are dogs that are half pit bull (supposedly) who won't kill a fox. . . . . . . . . . what chance do your salukis have!
-
Are sals not used on boar, jackals etc in their native lands? Also is the 'Arab' in the name 'bull Arab' which is a common hybrid pig dog in oz not a ref to the saluki blood?

Or even look outside the magical world of THL. . . . . . . .

If i needed a pup right now i'd be going to get that brindle bitch. Crackers mate

I can think of a few uses in theory. It's amazing how much leg and speed half sight hound of any type will add.
-
My older dog is a hancock and he,s never lacked drive, his speed and strike when he was younger was a pleasure to watch..the other dog i,ve got is out of him and a suluki x bitch and he will give as much in his last run as he does on the first and he has run til he dropped..... Fairplay, I didn't know your old dog was a hancock mate. It wasn't a knock against all Hancocks, i'm sure there are a lot of good ones out there. One thing I was thinking since writing that post. . . . . there are a lot of working bred lurchers who probably also have very similar attributes to those I men

I don't have a huge experience of Hancock dogs. . . . . but for what it's worth, here's my tuppence worth. Ive only seen (I think) three dogs from his kennels work. The one was a long time ago, and I helped a lad enter it. I don't remember much, but it was a half decent dog. The other two, I have had a lot more to do with, and seem come on. Both are owned by friends, and members on here, and both have posted about their dogs in this thread. Now I will say this, both dogs look to have all of the right bits in all of the right places. They seem to be able to do everything a lurcher shoul

I swear i've been there . . . .

Once upon a time I would These days not so much. Maybe its because the rabbits are endangered round here?
-
Where would be the fun in that. I've got several guns. But most of the time, I don't need anything dead that badly, that if the big dogs aren't there to do their bit, then it can just run. Same with ferreting these days, if it goes to ground and there isn't a running dog about, I don't really see the point on ferreting it out.
-
Aye, maybe. That'd suit me most of the time though But at the moment, my plan, while waiting for my lot to heal. . . . . is to convince my friends to go out with me and aim their dogs at stuff Could have had a brilliant catch today, but instead the would be victim, just got barked in its face quite a lot.

Thoughts On Hunting Foxes Northern Ireland
Ideation replied to the trunk's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think it would be a real shame for you to not post your photos and days out. . . . and I think you've been very good, in only posting suitable photos. It makes good reading, and its nice to actually have some hunting posts. However, I can see what some of the people were getting at, rightly or wrongly. Some may be jealous, however, unfortunately the internet is a double edged sword. The photos you post on here are fine, however, many people do post some daft stuff on face book. . . .. . not everyone needs to see a photo of a dog screwing a fox with blood everywhere. To the average perso -
Well, I've got to say it's been a very mixed start to the season. The dogs have been kept fairly fit over summer, out doing a lot of mooching, quite a bit of chasing, although not much catching. Things kicked off very well, got the old dog (Finn) out and had a few, and the young bitch (Bree) was to be fair, on fire. At two and a bit, she had just had that moment that all dogs have, where they suddenly grow up and into themselves, the pup becomes the dog that you will run for it's life. Mentally and physically she has grown into herself, and was catching very well. Just before she had her accid

Further Update On New Lurcher Association
Ideation replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My 'petty' criticism was just that, in many cases more than one running dog is used on a quarry, without it being terrible and immoral, and would I find myself contravening the 'COC' by going bushing with my little pack? I called it 'petty' because its not a major point, but one I wished to question, as it is through questions that we come up with good answers. I agree that the 'committee' needs to be squeaky clean, but I just question whether it may ultimately lead to a greater division amongst lurcher folk. Because I am certainly no moronic idiot out to 'smash' everything and 'fun da ban -
Further Update On New Lurcher Association
Ideation replied to Dewclaw69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Call it sad if you like. . . . . . but to me, that just sounds like the defence of someone who doesn't like constructive criticism! These kind of bodies NEED to be questioned, so that answers can be formed, defences prepared etc. When someone critiques what you are doing, and your only response is to call them sad or have a go at them. . . . . it just makes you seem weak and unsure of your position. I'd really like to support something like this, I think lurcher ownership gets portrayed in a terrible light. Its mostly down to the idiots and fools. . . . . but there are an awful lot of them- 650 replies
