our big saluki has been out of action with an infected toe, so h has been out of action anyway but a couple of my lads mates are regretting running their dogs after a night out last week both dogs have ligament damage. so i would say no unless they have trainers on ;0)

you have done yourself proud there lad. im in the process of putting a dog room into my big workshop its to double as a whelping kennel as and when i need it as i also have outside kennels but being the soft shite that i am all four of my dogs are in the house and have been for the past four weeks with this bloody weather. A real dog man makes sure he looks after his working dogs, its like any tool if you dont look after it well you wont get the best use from it.

i know its off thread but my worst dog wasnt a lurcher but an english bullterrier. got it at eightweeks old and the first thing it did was bounce off the living room window trying to savage a passerby. At EIGHT WEEKS it was as numb as coal wouldnt come back luckily i was always a fast runner and could catch it before it killed a dog cat cow camel car person anything the b......d was frightened of nowt. kenelled with my 3/4 collie all its life until one day i walked into the kennel and it had nearly killed the lurcher this was at 5 months old!! sold it to a truck driver at six month

I hope you get them back mate i know how thieves work they have no soul and are the scum of the earth. i once had some very special fighting cocks stolen a lot of hard work and planning destroyed by some numb smack heads who didnt even know what they were stealing just did it to order. never saw the birds again. but stealing a mans dogs how low is that!!

the mother was whippet/grey first x the dad was kelpie. the lad who bred her wanted ferreting dogs and thats what i will be using her for. im getting a bit old for wandering the country side in the dark. ive always preferred daytime work and i have enough permission not to need to jump gates.(in fact its a struggle to open gates these days)

This is a decent web site one of the best ive been on. We are lucky to have this resource to talk to each other about our lifestyle, because thats what it is a lifestyle its much more than a hobby to a lot of people. thirty years ago whenn i first ventured out with a ferret in a bag and hemp nets that were nearly as heavy as the ferret, i would never have believed that one day i would be able to get some bloody good advice and shared experiences at the flick of switch. This is our community amongst all of the arguments and banter. we need to watch out for each other and bring the youngster

they are certainly characters. she will be a star when she starts work i can tell already just in her general demeanour she loves to work and is extremely focused for a pup. i managed to get some photos up of her at the moment, like ive said in that post she isnt photogenic but she is a beauty she has real presence. Thanks for your input
-
Not everyones cup of tea and definately no beauty but she will do. 6 months old and currently about 21" at the shoulder

Not everyones cup of tea and i dont think she will win a lurcher show but she is a character

collie crosses are esy trained and easily upset the terrier cross is easier to enter and are tough little dogs which forgive handling mistakes. given that i will always have collie crosses they suit me. my son has a saluki longdog and he is a fine animal but a difficult breed to train and better at certain jobs than others. its horses for courses and i wish you well and enjoy your dog

Raw food diet...advice please
stroller replied to stroller's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
That is an interesting point, i have two dogs that dont do well on complete foods, one of them is really picky and the other gets an upset stomach. this is why im giving it a go both of these dogs are gundogs (Non pedigree), the two lurchers are eating machines and rarely seem to suffer stomach troubles -
I am about to start feeding my dogs a raw food diet, does anyone feed their dogs this diet all advice and your experiences appreciated. i know tht wild rabbits carry tapeworms. will freezing the carcass kill the eggs?
-
thanks mate, some truth in what you say as my old bitch died this year and she was definately the boss maybe the older dogs are just waiting for this little monster to take up the reins
-
Thanks mate, She needs one of the other three soft arse dogs to take her down a peg but they just put up with her

if you dont want to say then i understand but how much does it cost to buy the pup then arrange the import? and how do you get in touch with the arabs breeding them? i used to work in the middle east its a very closed sort of environment and they tend to only keep the very best of stock it must be a bit of a process to get them to let one go? (my experience was with Falcons not dogs but it must be similair) Good luck with her i hope she thanks you for bringing her to this wet and cold ;0)

i had a gsp years ago as a shooting dog and i think they are outstanding dogs, they cannot be beat for working ability i have seen a few lurchers of this type and everyone is a goer. if your going to breed a lurcher then this is a good start.Good luck

I have a little bitch kelpie x 6 months old. She is n absolute cow with my other dogs, jealous of attention, food, kennel space you name it she will have go at being top dog. On the other hand she is really easy trained and if you shout at her you would think she had been battered (I never hit my dogs) she goes down on her belly like snake. She is a fast and furious sort of dog she wants to play constantly until she is exhausted. Ive had first cross collies in the past but this dog is very different. Dont get me wrong she is a little cracker and has all of the hall marks of a great w

We were out with the ferrets today, couldnt take a dog as the snow is still frozen and like glass in places, rabbits were bolting very well considering the noise the crunching snow made as we set the nets. got half a dozen missed a couple but packed in due to lack of light and freezing cold. Durham/north yorks

he is a looker alright, hope he does well for you. im lucky my missus is as daft as me about dogs and animals in general if we had a place big enough it would definately be like old macdonalds farm

your oppionions on whippet and whippet x's
stroller replied to fraggle's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i have a little whippet/grey x collie/kelpie, six month old standing about 21" i thought she was going to be heavy but she has a nice shape now and looks like she may make 23". not rough coated but a good thick smooth coat. i wanted brains from a dog and train a bility and she is certainly smart.she has good feet as well which is important for me. Whippets a really game little dogs but tend to get torn cos they hit cover at 30mph. i have seen some really tough little whippets taking rat faster than terriers and i watched one draw a fox many years ago.go for a working strain. im not sur -
he is going to be a big lad at two years old, just take it steady with him and get him used to cats and little dogs. with a head like that he will do some damage if the bull comes out in him. like all young dogs get the re call and the retrieve right nd the rest is easy

My 16 month Lurcher, dont laugh at his name!!
stroller replied to twosey's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Stick with him bonny lad, he is only a pup yet and the more you work and train him the better he will be. All credit to you for getting him sorted too many lads would have got rid of him at the first sign of difficulty. Good luck
