Hellicopter up for ferreting ! !
stroller replied to baldockbanks courser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Mate you have the perferct oppurtunity to help the hunting cause by actually going to the papers with this . How much do you think it costs to put a helicpter up in the air? it costs a fortune we are talking thousands of pounds. you could mention the alternatives to ferretting as a pest control namely cymag which kills everything in the hole you could mention the govt released myxi virus. if i was you i would go to town with this. ask the police how many crimes were reprted whilst they were bothering you. For F....s sake a helicopter!!!!!! its incredible!! -
One of my sons mates had a dog stolen this week in a nearby vilage a little beddy x and he suspects we have had someone up here looking at our dogs. its a scary thought so the dogs are inside at the minute just in case. i might invest in one of those malinois as a gaurd dog

In response to Jamie... Pre ban i hunted rabbits and fox regularly with the dogs and if a hare got up i sometimes took them i shoot rabbits/fox/hares/pigeon/partridge/woodcock/snipe/crow/magpie and pheasant, and my gundogs also come beating on the moors for grouse. I never hunted deer even the little muntjac with dogs as i said its my choice i think its cruel and as i said thats my opinion. As i also said i only take rabbits close season for pest control reasons. as i also said in my opening comments In the summer i enoy getting out with the dogs walking, gundog trials lu

labour is sending young lads into war what about the death screams of an eighteen year old boy as his legs testicles and lower torso is shattered by a roadside bomb renting the night air of afghanistan or even the solid thwack of a high calibre round passing through a young mans body as he looks down at the rapidly spreading blood stain on his chest not knowing that the round that just went through him has killed him but his brain hasnt registered it yet. what about the millions of pounds being made from taxation of alchol which is more of a killer than heroin, crack and all of the other

This thread has shown there are some incredibly knowledgable people out in hunting land. and that Mr Brown has some dogs with good potential as breeding stock but equally so that even show whippets do well when entered properly. As a rabbiting man, always have been always will be! Whippets will always play a part in my dogs make up well done people you have shown an encyclopeadic knowledge of breeding genetics and history and just an almost fanatical interest in the subject matter it is truly amazing God bless the whippet that fast and furious yappy, nippy little hard B.....d

Its been a good thread i hope it makes sense to sme youngsters and some not so young
-
A lot of good replies here but its difficult to stop the youngesters they beleive in hunting all year round and its caused some arguments in this house i can tell you. I must admit ive never ever beleived deer was a legitimate quarry for a dog and i was never bothered about catching hares even when it was legal. So to continue on butchering them in the close season is more than a pointless exercise its cruel. sorry lads but its a point of view and thats why this forum is here i hope you respect that and dont get abusive
-
Apart from neccessary pest control does anyone out there actualy stop hunting during the summer? or did you stop hunting hares during the breeding season when it was legal(Of course)? We have a few rabbits around us and i dont take them during the summer but on the other hand i have to hammer one bit of permisson to keep the numbers of bright eyes down

Its just human nature it happens in all walks of life ive worked all over the world and ive seen this behaviour everywhere. The internet just makes it easier to be confrontational and judgemental. im sat here in our lasses basque and fishnets as im getting ready to do the ironing and i bet some people will have an opinion about that as well!!!!..................its shocking

every season it happens mate good dog men left broken hearted by accidents like this but thats the nature of our sport and your little dog was a working dog she lived the life. BETTER TO HAVE LIVED A MOMENT AS A TIGER THAN A THOUSAND YEARS AS A MOUSE. move on mate get yourself a pup and work hard at making her the best it can be. its being practical you need a dog for next season

look at the difference in the feet of your bitch and that dog it hasnt been walked ever!! mate the bitch looks a cracker and im sure you wil get the dog right but the previous owner needs reporting its criminal to let a dog go down like that. There are some cruel f . . . . . .s out there

looks ike a lionhead to me my daughter had one for a while but it was a horrible b*****d growling kicking and biting. eventually it got out and probably killed a few foxes and lurchers

This is Maggie my 8 month old kelpie x whippet/grey she has only been out twice and my posts are on here with a description of those events, she is doing very well an exceptionally bright and focused little dog, i have had collie crosses before and i find her harder work she is stubborn and as much as i would like too sometimes you cannot give her a smack because she loses confidence. So its just patience and dont expect to much too soon. Be warned they need socialising with other dogs pretty regularly, she is very sharp with my other dogs and is very wary of strangers. She is fine after a

i have 2 bitches and 2 dogs and not a bit of difference between them apart from the obvious. i make my choice from the litter by looking for the correct temperament and if the pup is physically sound. it could be a dog or bitch i have never went for a pup thinking i want a dog or i want a bitch, its whatever pup takes my fancy

Thanks mate he is my sons dog a really bonny dog and a real long distance dog not ideal for me but he suits the lad and what he uses him for.
-
thanks for your comments, Mags is a kelpie x whippet/grey. she will be mainly used ferreting but i will use her on the lamp when she gets a bit older and stronger. she will be used with the gun as well and will be beating on the grouse moors come august.i just try to do as much as i can with my dogs its a way of life for me.All of my dogs go to obedience classes its a great way of getting them socialised. im even considering agility work with mags once i get this gammy knee sorted and a bit of this weight off it could be a laugh over the summer and all the time it builds that man and dog bond.

Last weekend me and my grown up son took his saluki x grey up to some permission in Scotland we had no idea what it would be like but we booked a B&B ans set off in the van. My lad is 19 now and we dont get to spend a lot of time together so this was a bit of male bonding time. we reached the spot and the landowner showed us round. it wasnt massive but therer was ample sign of rabbits and some really good sets. The first set we tried a corner set with a dumped wood pile, sent out three rabbits one out of an unseen bolt hole , one threw a net and as my son wqas picking the net up a rabb

it was maggies 2nd day out ferreting today, We spent a couple of hours walking around some land closer to home but not easy to ferret. its mainly hedgerow work with water filled ditches running at one side or other, some clean sets in to the fields but its get down and get dirty work. this land has some rushy fields which hold sitting rabbits and hares so its good ground to get the pup to work quartering ground and using hand signals and commands to halt her or change direction. The idea of todays session was to walk the edges of the fields with mags on a lead letting her mark sets as we c

i have a big saluki cross grey and a small kelpie cross whippet. the saluki is ok in largish fields but in wooded country or small fields he cant get started the idea behind the kelpie x is that her size wil be ideal for this sort of ground (she is only 8 months at the moment) plus she is really inteligent wheras the saluki is a donut (A big lovable donut)

at 2 she is too young to breed from. a 4 year old bitch is much better as she has matured physically and mentally and you will have more idea of her working ability. as for the sire of her pups something with collie in it would be my choice and i did see a very nice acd x dog on this web site, full of brains and a hard as nails. she is still a baby let her grow up. but hey i was always a soft arse maybe im wrong

the irish terrier is a lovey breed game but tall, too tall really for fox around here. more biddable than the kerry blue. and th whippet is a cracking little dog. so a first cross should be an ideal rabbit dog and at twelve weeks 13" is ok it will probably end up betwen 19 and 23" jut depending on the parents. i once had a jack russell that would catch more rabbits than my lurcher she used to hammer the bunnies in cover. the irish terrier isnt a popular show breed which must count for something. train your pup well
