  1. Just an update the friend in question bought a pup from a working line owned by a gamekeeper. No idea of breeding etc. But thanks for the replies
  2. Anyone ever own one of these or have an opinion on them? For the money they look a decent gun but I have no experience of them. Grateful for your comments
  3. He needs to be focused on you at that age not hunting, you will very easily end up with a useless dog that will be in the next county when you let him off the lead. avoid rabbits like the plague until he is rock steady. Especially this time of year as he might catch one and then your well and truly buggered. I wouldn't even exercise him with other dogs off lead until you are confident he will come back or respond to the whistle. GSP are headstrong dogs. This is the time when you have the best chance of making or breaking the dog Good luck mate
  4. 4 albino hob kits needing a home. From working parents approx 6 weeks old. Near Bishop Auckland in Co Durham
  5. I'm enquiring on behalf of a friend for a springer pup from good working lines. North East preferably but not essential
  6. Dee they are very soft and sensitive and take forever to grow up but they aren't as headstrong as the gwp apart from that they work fairly similarly
  7. Good luck with the pup mate, get him retrieving asap and even picking up cold game they are strong hunters which can override the retrieving side. Its a shame he still has a tail I hope he doesn't have any bother with it as he gets older. My mates gwp tail never stops wagging luckily he is docked. I love the hpr breeds my vizsla is a cracker
  8. I'm not condoning this method but its a hangover from more brutal times and a lot of ignorance exists still today in the dog training world. I see it every year on the moor or on shoots.
  9. Mustelid Brittany are pure machines, they take some keeping on top of
  10. I think you are going to have to be more consistent and make sure you sit with her at every meal until you see a change and even then you will need to keep an eye on her
  11. It all depends on the dogs used I suppose. I personally think working type collies should never be kept purely as pets as they develop neurosis and become neurotic ball chasers etc. So adding a working collie to a working pointer the pups will definitely need a job as they will be full on physically and mentally demanding dogs. it would be an interesting cross
  12. I like Casso reply just got to think of things a different way
  13. good advice from bugs, I would stop slapping her and just scruff her and put her on her back like another more dominant dog would do, don't let her move until she is calm. Good luck
  14. Andyf I do a lot of work on the grouse moors so I get keepers days, if I could afford to pay for it I wouldn't be asking you riff raff for advice I would be down on Purdy's ranges experimenting with shooting beaters at various distances.
  15. I've seen a nice little Franchi harrier 20 bore at a decent price, I have never shot a 20 bore for game shooting does anyone have any preferences or advice? I haven't as yet tried the gun for the all important fit but the measurements seem about right I have a Franchi semi auto which is a brilliant gun and hasn't given me a spot of bother so I'm not put off by the Franchi name. I do a fair bit of game shooting theses days from driven grouse to pigeons but I still love a day in the rough rabbit shooting over all of them
  16. I asked Rory major what his ultimate hpr would be and he replied a Brittany he says they just have that bit extra drive and that they miss nothing. I don't like the look of them but handsome is as handsome does as the saying goes. As for smooth or wire I don't think it really matters ive seen both on the moor and they are demons but smooth can get the shivers
  17. mate I don't like the thought of using them and I haven't as yet but all of the keepers I know use an electric collar, One of the lads who has a very good rep for breeding long dogs swears by them for kennel noise. On the plus side I did try one strapped to my arm and on full power it felt like touching a not so strong electric fence. I have been tempted to use one on my little kelpie cross lurcher as she hates horses and we live in a horse area, but so far ive avoided it.
  18. turn your body to the side, lean down and take a few steps away to encourage the delivery. failing that get on the floor and encourage the pup to climb on to you. Or turn your back as he comes to you all of these work
  19. I have seen a couple of clumbers who worked well and a flatcoat that was very useful, and an occasional golden retriever. I would love to see a big curly coat work and my favourite the sussex spaniel out on a shoot.
  20. Mochastorm raised an interesting point in the golden retriever post which got me thinking, Why are the older breeds of gundogs used so little if at all these days? Show breeders have ruined them? The springer/cocker spaniels and labs are much better? I don't have any answers but I would be interested in your comments?
  21. If your set on getting one find a working type breeder, They aren't my type of dog but they same able for the job
  22. He is just a baby mate they are extremely slow at growing up I would just keep his training going and let him start hunting slowly. After all they are a spaniel and can be stubborn b*****ds. At nine months he has a lot of growing g to do I really wouldn't push him into anything or you will ruin him .
