went up the north pennines today just on me tod with little maggie to have a walk around some high country permission, there arent a lot of rabbits on this bit but a lot of sets on slag heaps from the old lead mines. now maggies experience has been mainly on the low ground with nice fields lovely warrens and very little cover. She tried my patience today as there was hundreds of acres of rushy, heather bog with more ups and downs than a tarts drawers. problem number 1 was the amount of grouse and wild pheasant hidden in these places, she hunts head down constantly and she covers a lot of g

ive borrowed locators when working my mates ferrets and they are fine but my own ferrets work ok with out them. it sounds like your working big warrens were rabbits will just f**k about get them shot boy even our big hob ferret goes through the nets sometimes we have to reset but mostly its ok. ferreting into nets is hard work im often more tired from a days ferreting than i am from a day building walls. its an up and down job but its bloody exciting

I dont know mate they were friends of a friend whose stag party i was invited on. i dont hold it against them they were all nuclear physicists and chemists and doctors and we had a good time apart from that episode which was started by the the geordie lad.

i have a little kelpie x grew and an older big saluki x grey and i would worry that when they were playing the little kelpie x was trying too hard and would be damaged i would physically restrain her, but to be honest she is slightly demented and it hasnt harmed her as she can catch the big hare (Potentially) dog without too much trouble. if she hadnt had the physical capability to catch the big dog but still had the drive to catch the dog would she have been potentially blown?? sometimes with young dogs you need to reel them in to keep them safe and other times you need to let them run to

Wales was the last hold out against the romans and then the saxons and is the homeland of the fabled king arthur and robin hood, beautiful country which begat the heros of the famous zulu wars. however i went on a stag do to amsterdam with a load of welsh lads who stood back while me and two geordie lads kicked f**k out of some aggressive black gentlemen. i have drawn my own conclusions of the welsh, but i did like gavin and stacy

never had any bother with joe public as what i do is out of the way of towns etc and the rabbits are a f*****g nuisance to the villagers, had my hands shook a few times for doing a good job. but lamping is another ball game its tough to get lamping permission luckily im too old to be bothered traipsing around the fields in the dark getting my knackers caught on barbed wire i will gladly leave it up to you more able fuckers

ive heard of this in ref to young dogs being pushed onto hares too young and always thought it meant some form of lung damage but never encountered it myself. had a 3/4 bred that would run itself to a standstill due to lactic acid build up it only happened once and i nearly shit myself i thought she was a goner but 30 mins later she was as right as rain not galloping about but normal walking about happy dog. as a result i never tried a dog on hare until i was happy it could cope this was all pre ban and even then i left the big, goat eyed, smelly feckers alone

Why do so many lurchers get swopped about?
stroller replied to stroller's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
all good answers and all true dont get me wrong a change in circumstance has happened to me twice and both times ive had to re home a dog and im still beating myself up about it 25 years later one was a lurcher dog i had when i lived in Ireland and i was made redundant so had to come back to england to my mothers so a lad i knew took it and worked it until it died after hitting a tree stump out on the lamp the other was a gsp gun dog and i got a job in saudi so one of my mates took him the lad left the north east to live down south so i never found out what happened to that dog. The moral -
whats the main reason for this happening? I have watched numerous people on here buying and selling dogs and even giving them away Why?
-
i think birds attitude to training is spot on, good advice it will probably save a lurcher or two from being swapped about

what was needed in a daytime hare dog pre ban
stroller replied to pegstaff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Somebody to kick up the hares for the dogs and seats so you could watch them being run for 20 mins -
Good luck lad i hope you enjoy it, at the end of the day it doesnt matter if you catch 2 or 20.

Due to a faulty keyboard i couldnt write this any earlier. Sunday morning was as forecast damp to start off with but not too bad so me and the son took maggie and jet a fair few nets two of this years young and last years seasoned jill piled them into the car and off to rabbit valley. By the time we got there half an hour later it was f*****g teeming down.Undeterred we wrapped up and ventured out.I decided to let maggie and jet hunt the fields before we got to the little wood there are some massive old warrens that hold a fair few rabbits and there is always a few of them sitting out a

The lurcher as a hunting companion, or as a killing machine?
stroller replied to Malt's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
but what about that grey area where you have a dog that has never hunted fox and it tackles one by accident when your out after rabbit. i have a little kelpie x grew i wouldnt stand by and watch a little dog like her try and tackle a big dog fox it would be a blood bath.wether big or small a hunter worth his salt should dispatch his prey with the minimum of fuss and anxiety caused to the prey. its your duty and we can all argue till we are blue in the face but wether its vermin or not it deserves a quick and as painless a death as possible. all my dogs are companions first and foremost wha -
The lurcher as a hunting companion, or as a killing machine?
stroller replied to Malt's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i only hunt rabbits but i dispatch them as soon as they are in my hands wether netted or retrieved by the dog. a wild animal must go through a helluva trauma if a hunter allows his dog to maul it to death. -
they will be mighty nippy little rabbit dogs. nice litter

As above really i have two young ones and ive been putting them through holes with my mates two experienced hobs they are only playing at it at the moment but the young hob did bolt a rabbit the last time and he looks all the keener for it. the young jill is still jumping around like a looney fighting with my boot laces.i cant but help laugh at them when they are mock fighting. its all practice though and sensitive confidant handling around the holes will reduce the risk of turning them into skulkers (Diving back into holes when you approach). i always put my young ferrets into cages on th

Dont worry too much about the collar thing most long dogs take to it easily. he is a lovely pup i hope he does well at the bunnys and even if he doesnt people cant pass a saluki without telling you what a beautiful dogs they are. i dont have a pure bred dog but he is saluki x greyhound back to saluki x greyhound and he looks pure bred to the un initiated and he certainly acts like it. and he can catch the odd rabbit as well

happened to me twice this year £600 in total for the same dog i should have got her insured the first time so it was my fault i had to pay through the nose i wouldnt care but the other 3 dogs are all insured. no matter how you think you know your ground you arent born with a built in barbed wire detector so dont beat yourself up

is she only 5 months old? you might be pushing it bringing her on so quick she is still a baby and she is still growing mentally and physically. she sounds like she will make a good dog and i wish you all the best just be careful
