  1. poodle x labrador never caught a rabbit!! grand gundog though very popular with a lot of keepers and beaters up here, great character
  2. Talking from total ignorance about coyote hunting but how are the hounds around other dogs?? im pretty sure they distinguish between coyote and pet pooches as do our fox hunting lurchers just wondered if you have had any problems?
  3. Lad i hope he is allright as ive seen greyhounds with a similair injury and it heals well enough until the dog really tries and then it busts open again, give him a really good rest and time to heal properly, just road work and try him again. i really hope its just a little injury and nothing more i feel like a bit of shit talking like this as your obviously buzzing with the new dog and i hope im wrong but be warned. i hope you dont think im being awful lad and i hope it gets better
  4. Im not sure i understand this advert either, dont get me wrong ive had to get rid of a dog in the past when i moved abroad and i once had an aggressive dog that i sold on as it was a liability but the new owner was happy with that. but i dont think i could sell my old dog just to make way for a new one. its a bit like buying and selling a car or a mobile phone just because its the new model I guess im a soft shite who treats his working dogs like pets and not like a tool
  5. All the best lads come hell or high water im out monday
  6. Beautiful dogs what is that green stuff is that grass????
  7. if the grass is long and clompy try threading the peg through the clump and around the base and through the string, same near hedges and dry stone walls or put stones or logs on top of pegs or just dive on the nets asap or have a catch dog the net slows them down a second or two long enough for even a terrier to be on them. you can only do what you can do
  8. apart from not being able to get the pegs into the ground i did a bit of ferreting on sunday on two inches of snow and rock hard soil but it didnt hurt the dog as she only had a couple of proper runs on pasture land. however i wouldnt run her on the lamp in this weather but then again her and her kennel mates are flying around the fields playing and hunting up without any injury it pays to be careful a coupe of dead rabbits doesnt compensate for a smashed up dog
  9. Mate its harder to train a good ferreting dog than it is a good lamp dog and it takes time for a dog to be good at antyhing. at 20 months old she is doing well and still hasnt matured fully and hopefully she will still be ferreting at 12 years old!! she is just doing the work well that your showing her the most of and as you say the ground around you is well lamped so nowt to worry about, dogs will always be competitive with each other so unless your working different sides of the hedge with another lad and his dog its never going to be different.
  10. even walking around the set is magnified by the hard earth its like walking on a drum, i try to net up as quietly as possible stand well out of the way and down wind if i can.
  11. Good read mate and its great to get a bit of permission out of no where
  12. Gentlemen i dont hunt hounds been to a meet once or twice but thats about it but from my view point all of this out crossing is just hound/dog development and its what men have always done. People outcross like this in search of a hound/dog that does a particular job better than breeds that exist and can i just say good luck to them i hope they reap the rewards of their adventurous spirit. and likewise for the hound fraternity those dyed in the wool stalwarts of the beautiful hound i commend you for your loyalty and purest ideals, I hope we are all joined in the pursuit of our sport and wh
  13. Thanks folks she is roughly 20 months old and she has a way to go it just takes time. a fereting dog needs time to mature into the role
  14. To be honest lads we have no idea how much is in him he is the result of saluki/grey back to saluki/grey a few times over. My neighbour breeds salukis and his stud dog and jet are similair in build and shape.
  15. send them into asda and see what they come out with
  16. You will end up with something like this mate he is my sons dog and he has put a lot of time and effort into him and the end result is an excellent all rounder good luck
  17. Well Maggie has just come out of season and the snow has retreated for the moment so it was of out with the ferrets for a few hours. the little bitch isnt at her best as the deep snow curtailed her exercise and being in season knocked her out of sorts, but we both needed a run out so we headed for a rabbit healthy area where i have permission, i couldnt get into the village where i normally park for snow and ice so parked on the out road and walked in we have worked this area for a fair few seasons but the little dog found a few new sets but i need a ferreting partner to do a most of them
  18. Thats right mate if you have good ground and dont work them every day the grew takes some beating as a catch dog. i work dogs as a hobby im not out every day so i need less from my dogs than some people who do pest control etc. i suppose the choice is made on what you need from the dog what type of ground is it you hunt little fields probably work more in the whippets favour do you have permission or are you a poacher which will work against whippets as they can be yappy do you need a dog to work cover then maybe a gundog x or terrier xwould suit can you live with a sensiti
  19. They do get spoiled a bit sometimes my lad was reading this and he admitted giving his big saluki x the odd pie on the way home if they have been out mooching. But a bit now and again doesnt seem to be slowing them down any
  20. i run a kelpie x grew she has brains, good feet and is as game as a banty cock, i would always go for a collie type x for ferreting you need a dog with a brain but saying that i do like pure grews they are flying machines

  22. not many people use these dogs for bore work they get used alot more in bitework and weight pulling comps
  23. i used to have an american bulldog and the noses arnt that pushed in and plus if its crossed with a greyhound its not gunna have a pushed in nose is iti recon these dogs will be dead heavy if its a first cross i se3en one before at a game show it was a stunnin dog but weather it done the job or not i dont know
  24. ive used terriers in the past and they are great but the little b*****ds do go to ground when you dont want them too i prefer a spaniel preferably a cocker and when my lad moves out and takes his dog and stays out for a year ive promised myself a pup.
