Thanks for the kind comments it is a huge relief Just an update on that escaped ferret that was under my neighbours chicken shed. i found it this morning running down the field on its way to the woods. since it attacked my welly clad legs i decided to let it wander where it liked without any interference from me or the dogs, i just wished it luck.

Got the silver jill back this morning The landowner picked her up this morning when he was feeding his horses she was in the stable yard just pottering about. So the mystery of how she got out of the warren remains but regardless im over the moon to get her home. Thanks again to Matt for his kind offer of help and to the others who passed on their good wishes

stroller replied to stroller's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
the wife is the official owner of these two but Bob the black one is my gundog the white one is our lasses pet but she works cover like a spaniel absolute demon on birds The little kelpie x grew is my ferreting dog and the big Saluki x is my lads -
woah caterpillar steady on. I took my big hob with me today if she was down there he would have chased her out. like ive said im convinced she isnt there and a collared up ferret would have done nothing differently than my ferret he would just ignore the dead rabbit and work on he wouldnt have stuck with an old dead rabbit . i also tried the big lad in the sets close by all of which were empty. ive used him like this before and its always worked. I didnt want that lad coming all the way from cleveland taking up his time and money travelling over 110 miles to my permission and home for it

Happy lamper That is a fine looking animal. What do you use her for and how does she work is she noisy? Cooney Are you inferring by my ownership of the splendid animal of mixed retriever/poodle breeding named Bob, my very favourite dog that i know f**k all about hunting? i think ive already said i know nothing about foxhounds i think this was partly the point of my post. The very little contact ive had with the very noble breed has been a positive experience. honestly the predjudice shown against the labradoodle from working dog men is shocking. The lurcher is a crossbreed i have two -
We have had a bit of myxi up here but numbers are still good, i caught one yesterday that had recovered from myxi and one that looked like it was recovering so maybe its not doing the damage it used too?

lab I might be cabbage loking but im not green i honestly never realised ferrets could move so quick, if it cant be tamed i will have to shoot it which is a real shame it is a bonny little thing as fit as fire

My wife is looking after a neighbours two hens and went up this morning and a young albino jill has killed one of the hens and is at this minute underneath the chicken shed. i went up to try and catch it and it didnt want to be caught it was like greased lightning. so ive blocked it in for the minute. i would like to catch it alive and try and tame it down anyone had any success doing this? i can get a big wire catch alive trap tomorrow from work and put that at one of the holes it will probably get it ok. i cant let it go locally as there are too many people in our little hamlet with chic

Ive been up this morning, had a look about but no sign yet, met the landowner and his missus up there and they will keep an eye out, if she gets out (If she is still there) she will probably run up to them. unfortunately they didnt get anymore snow last night as i wqas hoping to find some tracks around the stables and feed sheds. Im not convinced she is in the warren but its all speculation.

Foxhound x greyhound anyone got one?

Carragh i used to watch a lad and his mate using 1 foxhound dog to hunt out fox in patches of bog land they shot the fox using the dog to drive the fox onto the guns. So they will work singly. i didnt know the background of that particular dog wether it was a home reared pup or a pack animal. i think their nose would be a bit of a bugger if you were lamping but maybe there is someone on here who knows for sure. Dont get me wrong i love the english foxhound i dont think there is anymore more handsome work ready dog i would have one tomorrow if the wife would let me. it would have to -

i cant honestly see them being a brilliant x as most foxhounds are brain dead, but they are so tough its amazing. -
Watchman I have tried contacting the lad who bred her a few times but he never got back to me so i stopped trying. The dam was a smashing dog and he had obviously looked after the litter well and thought a lot of his dogs so fair dos There was a red dog pup i would have been interested in seeing how he turned out much chunkier than mags and a good bit taller. The litter was bred to work the lad just never bothered with the dew claws and unless she catches them in the future i wont bother removing them. Im only a weekend hunter and even then its mainly ferreting so i cant see them be

Havent heard of this x in a while, i saw a few in the 80s bonny looking dogs never worked one though. interesting to hear if anyone has this x and what they perform like

Good write up mate i must be getting old the idea of clarting about in the dark to catch a few rabbits with mud up to your oxters its not my idea of heaven

i have a little Kelpie x grew about 21 months and 23 at the shoulder. i use her mainly for ferreting and i cant fault her work for a young dog . She is a bit sharp with other dogs and not the easiest dog ive ever owned. Very very focused and sharp and for a first x she is quick. just tell your mate to have loads of patience and watch his temper as they dont forget mistakes easily

I have had great offers of help from various people willing to give up their time and use their equipment and travel to find my old ferret. Sometimes when i listen to the bitching that goes on i feel like giving up on this web site but i am proud and heartened that there are genuine people out there who care about the humble ferret that much mistreated animal. every effort is being made to get her back i am away to have a look and the landowner was up with a torch last night and nothing has dug out i will try putting the big hob back in and trench what i can its under a load of blackth

gutted today for the first time of 30 years of ferreting i lost a ferret, my old silver jill in a not even massive hedge row set!! i have no idea what the hell happened. she had killed in earlier but had come out of that set fine after a few minutes. i have a feeling she is backed in behind a rabbit or she has died down there possibly suffocated she was a bloody good worker and even though she did kill in the longest ive had to wait on her is 15 mins. I dont use collars etc but i will buy a set now its the not knowing that bothers me most if she has died for whatever reason thats sad b

Everything that the kennel club gets its hands on is ruined by the show dog people. thats why we have two distinct variations of one breed such as the cocker spaniel, terriers etc. your dogs look stunning friend and i like the big old mastiff type as well
-
That pup looks a little cracker ideal size for a ferreting dog, if i had more work i could justify the pup to the missus bloody shame as i really like the look of her
-
Santiago i dont think there would be a deliberate cross of the pedigree wire haired fox terrier and sighthound, the fox terrier is a nice dog but no longer a working breed. The dogs used would be a jack russel x whippet and called a whirrier and there are a few people on here use them. use the search and put in whirrier

great pictures mate looked like a good day had by all, good weather and a fairly clean set of warrens. good stuff
