  1. Thanks for the nice comments lads, Rocky 1 thanks for asking about The big dog he is back to fitness and is coming on a treat it was a good decision of my son to not put him down the leg is disfigured but it seems fully functional. The lad has worked hard with him and is now building up the road work, off lead he is running abouyt like a pup so it will be next season before we know if he can work like he used too. But as my son said regardless he will always have a home with us
  2. you must have been looking through our front window the little bugger would spend her life on the sofa
  3. no secrets to her shiny coat she just has one she is a full on little dog, she does everything at 100mph so dead easy to keep fit the only time she has lost condition is when she had her first season. she is manic really a lot like collies she never and i mean never stops
  4. My lovely missus took some cracking pictures of our dogs today here are a few of my kelpie x grew maggie just turned 2 she has had a good season despite a few rips and tears. i need to keep up her obedience training as she is a head strong little bugger. she has got to 22" ats and for a first x she is very quick. I use her just for ferreting. she is doing the collie thing on this one she is constantly herding the other dogs
  5. The lad i got her off keeps a good line and his stuff really does work, he bred a litter last year and kept a few back but after two knee ops in nearly as many months and the last one has taken some getting over, he just didnt handle them as much as he should this one has done a little bit and worked well. im persevering with her as i was desperate for a jill from good lines if its just a matter of taming her down then it will be worth it if however she has a screw loose and wont stop biting then i would put her down. but as it stands she is a lovely little thing and has calmed right down so i
  6. I recently was gifted a jill ferret for breeding purposes she is an out and out biter so thought i will get some ferret tone and try that, well she doesnt like it but my big super friendly hob loves it. initially first thoughts were well so much for that idea however she has calmed right down maybe its the smell of the stuff on my hands has some sort soporific effect but she is not interested in biting when its present on my skin anybody had similair experiences?
  7. its all about how the dogs are brought up, true i have a little kelpie x that is very wary of people and other dogs and shows fear agression until she is introduced properly and then she is their best mates. This little dog has had hours and hours of agility and obedience training its just her nature and would probably have been vicious in the wrong hands. very few people keep the dog training up once they have got the basics a dog keeps on learning and developing right throughout its life. its worth the effort and keeps the dog motivated. i have seen some absolute stunning examples of inc
  8. Big bob the labradoodle and maggie my little kelpie x on a toad hunt. There where literally thousands of toads the noise sounded like a flock of starlings. i would just like to add no toads were hurt during the making of this film
  9. There is something beautiful about a well made knife i just want one. Bought a lovely little lock knife for my lad who is a tree surgeon (A proper one not a tarmac man)and he went and lost it. If it had been me i would have been gutted but not him "its only a knife" he said, bloody phillistine!!
  10. it shouldnt be a problem if you keep them kenneled seperately we have a stud dog here and 2 bitches, it can be a nuisance but its only for a couple of weeks. he doesnt kick up a fuss its the bitches i have to watch
  11. I think most breeds will use their nose really well if brought up to hunt that way, my sons saluki x has a brilliant nose and my mates little staffy bitch marks sets no probs, i used to have a bullmastiff that hunted hare head down like a beagle. Some will have more propensity such as terrier/gundog crosses but really its second nature for them all to use their noses. Its all in the training and how much you work your dog
  12. Well done i used to use a jack russel in the 80s when i was rough shooting but it was always a race to get to the game before she ate it I honestly have never seen a better game finder but she was a psychopath with dogs and people. she lived to a good age and still loved biting things right up to the end
  13. Cheers watchman i had a look at that earlier, just wondered if anyone has first hand experience. They look a very steady type of dog not nuts like most springers or cockers, i also liked the look of those sussex spaniels. we dont see much of this type of dog up here on any of the shoots mores the pity. people prefer the dash and drive of the faster dogs. seeing a lot of pointer crosses lately
  14. Was after a little cocker but after seeing crufts the other night i wondered if there is a working strain of this breed?
  15. Cheers lads been off line all week the little bdog is fine its healing nicely, some good ideas but i think she would still find a way to get cut up being so fast through cover she is going to get caught. it was a bad day and i was pissed off but im chilled now
  16. My season is done ive had enough, Out today with my little bitch ferreting she did really well marking extremely well and covering well i noticed a slight limp but didnt think much of it as we were ferreting holly hedges and the dogs pick up bits which usually drop off as the morning wore on she missed a sitter and stopped running a couple oif times on closer inspection she has took a lump off her chest and has cut her leg again. it has pulled together ok and has cleaned up well. but i am heartily sick of this happening she isnt 2 yet and she has had six wounds from barbed wire two of whic
  17. Hope you have been CRB checked and your activities have been risk assessed and was the boy wearing appropriate PPE?? and have you got permission from parents, school and social services for the kid to be with you and do you hold a teaching qualification for under 16s?? I hope he settles down mate and gets back into school ok,He probably misses his dad working away. lads definately need a role model its good to see someone who cares and isnt a catholic priest
  18. WR: He is a big softy but he has a bit of history his owners didnt get him until he was 18 months old and i would say some bloke has give this dog a bit of abuse as he is very wary of men. By bed time last night the big sort arse was all over me but it took a few hours of ignoring him before he came round. Had him out over the fields with our lot and he is an extremely athletic dog and by f**k he can run and run and run and run. Typical herding breed but more laid back. he is following me around the house and he let me clean his feet this morning ok. i like him, and would have one if i was int
  19. Here is a completely new breed to me and i would guess others on here. Kai is boarding with us for the weekend and he is a bloody big (50kg and 27") dog he doesnt like men much so i could be stuck on this computer all night if he doesnt let me out of the study Big and athletic crossed with a greyhound they could be useful pulling rhino down here is a bit of google bumf about the breed The Beauceron is a French shepherd dog dating back to the 1500's, said to be developed solely in that country with no crosses to foreign breeds. Originating in the plains region surrounding Paris know
  20. Another succesful day out mate did the old dog go as well i hope to get out tomorrow morning but i need this wind and rain to die down. im noy having a repeat of the other week.
  21. Dont shout, and think about what you want from the dog. They tend to be a bit sensitive so go easy until you get to know your pup. You can get an awful lot out of a collie x with the right training. i have got to the point with my little dog where i squeak her in on re call, click my fingers to get her to heel and use sshh to settle her down around a warren. she looks for hand signals and can work on the other side of the hedge showing a steady attitude. She is still young at 22 months so i know she will be even better next year given enough work on a bad day and i had one quite recently sh
  22. Steve mate you were lucky thats not a grass snake its lesser black backed turtle snatcher from darkest Wales it can kill with one bite and it lures its prey in by pretending to be cold. Its known to have killed millions of cormorant hunters across the world. watch what your doing for gods sake but if you do get bit can i have your permission????
  23. had a gsp retrieve a dead sheep out of a river, and i still watch in amazement when my gundog retrieves stuff from under water. i know a lot of gundogs do it but it still strikes me as odd
  24. i know ive read alot about low rabbit numbers this year but i think the cold weather has stopped the myxi and the rabbits all but two ive caught this year have been as fit as a fiddle the other two i mentioned have been recovering from myxi. good bags of rabbits mate do you sell them or recycle them through the dogs and ferrets?
