  1. I would be a bit concerned that it has gone through its formative weeks of puppyhood without socialisation. I wouldn't touch it
  2. We have a 9 year old saluki x grey nearly pure saluki from the look of him. He has had a lot of work and is one of the best catch dogs I have seen. He marks brilliantly when ferreting and takes some beating on flushed rabbits
  3. if they get bored with straight forward retrieve would you not be better training to retrieve blinds and memory retrieves? So the little dogs have to hunt for the dummy? Just a thought it will keep them interested and let them use their hunting instinct? Ive never had a spaniel of any sort so im guessing here
  4. mine are all kennelled but they come in as puppies until they are about 6 months old and are crate trained they don't live in crates they just know that's their space. My kids are grown up but we have a dog day care/boarding business so they are subject to seeing all sorts of dogs and people which helps their socialisation no end. Their training is carefully monitored both in the house and when they make the transition to the kennel. My dogs do get in the house on an evening Working dogs(Probably all dogs) need to have their early months full of controlled stimulation and new experience
  5. nice dog work Trev it nearly ended up in your pocket! We did a bit a fortnight ago I love them clean sets beats netting up under hawthorns
  6. I would do a bit of basic obedience so he is working for treats just nice and easy recall sit stay etc I think it will help I know it conflicts with Casso advice but we do a fair bit of rescue/ fostering for the labradoodle trust (Someone has to whatever your opinions) and from my experience dogs live day to day and they sharp get on with life
  7. What are they like in cold weather and can they jump fences? jumping a fence would be a must as they are too big to lift
  8. Red tail what are they like to kennel I was talking to a bloke called Paul Keyland who keeps a large kennel of different hprs and he loves the Bracco but reckons they aren't easy with other dogs?
  9. Right Mark there is no one on your doorstep but you have the option of training with the GSP North West club I train occasionally with the Yorkshire group and they are brilliant so you can FB them and there is a guy in Preston Called Geoff Saint who does one to one again FB or google him. I had to put the miles and time into finding trainers over here in the North East its just the way it is im afraid. Good luck
  10. Mark I have asked the question on the hpr groups on facebook, so hopefully I will have a contact for you soon.
  11. get him to a dog trainer for £30 an hour its worth it
  12. Get a good line of gwp and they will do everything you want. They wont back down from anything with teeth and the main trouble you will have is stopping them hunting. They can be a dominant dog to kennel and they are headstrong but gentle consistent handling will give you a real dog. There are Dutch/german lines that are particularly good but I don't know any more than that
  13. As above we need a new transit connect fitted out with dog crates.
  14. my dogs are entire but ive seen plenty of neutered working dogs and it doesn't make any difference to their abilitys. It also wont stop them chasing it wont make their re call better only training will do that. If you are going to neuter wait until the dog is at least 18 months or even 2 year old. just give his body time to mature. Im not a fan of neutering as personally I think its a lazy mans excuse but its your dog and if you want it done the choice is yours
  15. £700 to £8oo is the normal price for most of the HPR breeds
  16. I have a Suzuki grand vitara its a thirsty b*****d but very tough little car. I wouldn't have another one though discovery all the way for me
  17. When I was 18 a pint was 60p, I paid £4. the other day. The pint hasn't got any bigger or particularly better. Rising costs of vets, food etc and in some cases a certain amount of greed have pushed up prices. Sometimes a high price will stop someone who isn't sure they really want a dog.
  18. Good effort mate did you use batter frame at the cheek end? My only worry is that the through stone near the end of the wall is sticking out so much if a cow catches that she will bring the end down. Its always more difficult with totally random stone its hard to get the depth of stone to tie in. but if your batter is right and she is packed nice and flat with decent heart stone she will stand up
  19. stroller

    Gwp

get the stop and recall whistle down so he will never ignore either and get him into as many different working situations as you can. in about 3 years you will have a real dog
  20. I've never seen a pointing dog pass a bird or rabbit in heavy cover they are scent driven and hard wired to hold a scent and i've seen both breeds bump birds at a distance. You can train a dog all its life and it will still have an off day. Choose whatever dog your capable of training the pointers need longer to grow up some as much as twice as long as spaniels.
  21. lovely chunky pup is that another name for the GWP? What kennel did she come from? I am waiting for a German imported wire haired viz to be bred so I can get a pup from it. The Germans seem to be regulated in how many pups are bred etc
  22. Yes Dave he had a lot of work from August through to the 31st of Jan. I couldn't ask for better to be honest. I am doing a lot of directional retrieving stuff with him now he loves work but he is still as mad as a hatter
  23. the dog could be sick, as in brain tumour sick. A change in nature like this often points to physiological changes
