nice work mate, the little dog did well
-
pointers can be hard work and not as easy to train as labs, but of the hpr breeds the vizsla is perhaps the least headstrong. If they atre brought up well they do a very good job at least i hope so as i am getting my wirehaired vizsla pup in a fortnight. I know the sire of this pup quite well and he is a great dog and the kennel (Gonegos)he is from is full of excellent working dogs. The bitch isnt worked but her parents are so im hoping for the best and that im up to the job.

its a dog pup mate, Bob is six this year and it looks like he has a bit of arthritis so i need this pup up and working for the 2013/2014 season if it works ou. Bob can still put a day in no bother at all but he will start to get old fast after next year. Maggie has been a problem with stock, she has been a swine with horses for a while but stood barking at a ewe the other day, not good when the poor bugger is in lamb! She found the ewe in a spinney they work for rabbits. it had escaped from its field. She has never even looked at sheep before and i think it was just in the wrong place at t

Most young dogs go through a skinny lanky stage, and i have seen a couple of springers on the moor who cant keep weight on even off season. but if your in any way worried get him to a good vet

Allright John, Maggie funnily enough is usually ok with puppies but her odd ways have been a bit of a problem lately Skycat and chalkwarren have come through with some sound advice and it seems to be working. I wont have another half kelpie bred dog though it will have to be 3/4. She is hard work. The pup will be kenneled eventually with Bob and it wont be exercised with the lurcher and her mate. Bloody snowing up here today it hasnt lain but it was a winter wonderland first thing

Just got back from choosing my wirehaired vizsla puppy, They are only 3 weeks old but went for a big laid back dog pup. The sire is a Gonegos dog and the bitch is from the zoldamali lines. So the breeding is there its all down to the nurturing now. Pick up is on the 12 May i cant wait!!!!

A big thankyou to Skycat and Chalkwarren for their advice on a behavioural problem with my Maggie who is a Nervous wreck x Twat type lurcher. I have had years of experience with Dogs but the more i learn the less i know! Its nice to know that there are very intelligent caring people who are only too willing to help The main lesson learned is to keep a good relationship with your dog its just like being married but obviously more important :0) Thanks again Stroller

Got a chance at one of these for about £180, good condition. Anyone use one they seem like a tough little gun?
-
either would do the job mate just depends on what you fancy
-
a sock for retrieving, whistle and a light lead mate and just have fun with your pup. he just needs to get used to basic obedience and get him well socialised but let him be a baby and make it all a game

GWP Anyone in scotland working them !!
stroller replied to billbroon's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
google the HPR forum. There is loads of info on there and they seem a decent bunch. The gwp isnt a dog for the faint hearted very fast moving dogs that of course cover a lot of ground but if they are brought up steady and install all the basics then instinct will do the rest -
german wirehaired pointer, anyone own one?
stroller replied to reynardhunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
hard work initially but when they do the job its a joy to behold, A lot of well thought out training delivered patiently and you cant go wrong -
yep its a delicate issue getting a dog steady to point. letting a dog work up and flush will just about ruin it for pointing and working it with a flushing breed such as a springer will only make it more determined to flush the game first. Depending on the dog of course most arent in the field until they are between 18 months and 3 years old. It doesnt sound as though it matters to you that the dog isnt pointing so just enjoy its flushing capabilitys and let it be a pet.

if it doesnt hold in the net its not worth it for me. i have arthritis so i specifically need a dog to hold until i get there as long as it doesnt crush it.

i have a little kelpie x lurcher. As long as its a game they are fine the minute you get upset or angry they know and my advice is just pack in trying. Very sensitive dogs and they do think they know best most of the time. so its a subtle mix of perseverance and gentle persuasion. I wouldnt fancy trying to train two of the buggers

I was in a local Gun shop the other day and had a bit crack with two lads who were in with a hammer gun. Very interesting chat ensued and now i have a bit of an interest in using a hammer side by side on the shoot next year just for somthing a bit different. Not wanting to pay a fortune probably about £500 and i wondered does anyone use one regularly? When i say use it on the shoot its a walk one shoot one so its not going to be used for 1000s of shots at high pheasents! any further than 40 yards i cant see the buggers anyway

people are funny i got reported to the local keeper for poaching by people who have seen me on the same spot for years. The keeper wasnt nasty or cheeky he was a canny lad when i explained he said he had to check a phone call out as its all to do with the farm watch thing. I introduced myself and my lad and gave him my phone number to save himself the bother next time. As to your question just go at dawn net the sets and try to keep out of folks way as much as you can. maybe even drop a leaflet around saying you will be performing pest control on such and such a date and if there are

Thats hard to bear mate he still had a good few years in him as well. Good luck with his pups

They arent silenced just moderated there is still a canny bang from them definately louder than my air arms prosport but nowhere near the sound of a normal 410. It just sort of deadens the bang. I was shooting rabbits in my friends garden (about an acre) and he didnt know i was there so the sound definately doesnt travel. Took it to the the clays and against the un moderated 12 bore it sounds like a pop. handy gun i use mine over ferrets and for a bit of pigeon shooting and mooching

ive never trained the forced retrieve, i wouldnt know how i dont like the sound of it. I know how i feel if the management at work are being forceful so to come home to a nervous little dog and force her to retrieve. I would really have to have knowledge i havent got cos it would destroy her mentally. Maybe it works on dogs with stronger mental states? i just like the play method its worked for me in the past and it will work again.

Thanks lads for the comments, Maggie will be right ive no real worries on that score. She is a funny little thing and pretty much a one man dog but and ive said it before i wouldnt reccomend this cross for a first time lurcher owner. By making mistakes we learn about ourselves and our dogs and often it just takes thinking through. So many lurchers are just passed on for a lot less than stopping retrieving when all it would take is a bit of time and patience. Thanks again

Ive had a problem this season in that my little kelpie x has stopped retrieving, which for a bit of a cripple like me is a nuisance. But on thinking about it it was fairly obvious why. Maggie My missus started a dog day care/boarding service which she runs from home and its been a success right from the word go and we regularly have 10 or twelve dogs a day and we have converted part of our house which is a fair size in a little village surrounded by fields with loads of right of way. So every thing was hunky dorry my dogs as well as the customers dogs were getting loads of exercise a

Ive seen some gundogs try to be lurchers usually to the cry of "you b*****d just shoot the f*****g thing" i did have a lurcher that could work with the gun but i was a young man with loads of time to train it, but to be honest he wouldnt work thick bramble and he tended to get out of range easily but retrieving from water no probs. but when it comes down to it he wasnt a lab or spaniel just a very well trained lurcher. A good gundog is hard to beat
-
i wouldnt reccomend a pointer as a 1st dog, labs definately fit that role more. But its horses for courses and you might prefer the different styles of different dogs. Nothing at all against pointers by the way i love them but they tend to be immature longer and can be a handful if they arent kept on top off as young dogs. as they mature they are a real thinking hunter.

Thanks lads but until its sitting at my feet its all just a plan. Seemingly the vizsla only comes into season once a year and its this bitches first litter so there are a few ifs, buts and maybes. Fingers crossed
