  1. i think your original suggestion should be fine, i would probably get a kennel and run set up as well. it will keep the pup safe and contained and let your missus have a break when you have such a young family
  2. The weather was unseasonably warm last night so i decided to take the pup up to some local ponds with my big dog Bob and a customers dog Otis to introduce the pup gently to water.Remember i didnt want him to swim just have fun in the water, he is a keen little retriever so i was chuffed he went in after the stick. I think he will be fine as a water dog. its all a game and a good introduction wether its to water, shot ,game etc makes things so much easier later on. My wife took the photos i wouldnt know how! Janos at 17 weeks Big Bob showing him how its done
  3. you could also try turning your back on the dog and walk away but keep the dog at heel so its still carrying. then praise her and take it from her
  4. just an update we could only save 1 kit he was from the start the most aggressive feeder. he has opened both eyes and can maintain his own body heat with out too much supplementary heating. I will probably keep him he deserves to be a worker treated with a bit respect
  5. Cheers folk i think we might lose the one that was cold in the run but the other three are flying eating mashed chicken and lactose free puppy milk
  6. The jill is spot on she is her usual hyper self, im fairly convinced it was the dog incident. Originally she had the kits in the middle tier of three large hutches and i thought i had blocked the pipe off. but she then moved them down into the lower tier with the hob when they were a few days old so i left them in there and removed the hob. But obviously they were all at dog height and a friends cocker pulled a rabbit through the mesh and hey presto disaster!! The kits seem to be doing fine they fed well this morning from the bottle and they will be put on a saucer later to see if they wi
  7. Mick she is very agitated and is just running over them and knocking them out of the nest. She seems to be ignoring them in the run
  8. Probably due to a dog pulling a dead rabbit through the wire of her hutch my little sandy bitch has allowed her young to get cold we have lost two and have four inside warming up and are getting ready to hand rear them, fortunately they are between 3 and 4 weeks old so should take a bit of meat. There are a couple of good posts on here that should help and the missus God love her has volunteered to do the rearing and she isnt even that keen on the ferrets. Lessons to be learned for sure
  9. lovely job mate, i got my last set of hardware from B&Q it was extortionate, gate furniture cost more than the wood to build the gate
  10. Yes Dave its something like that, the wooly coat would be no good it has to turn the weather and cover if a dog is to work the moor and then the woods
  11. Yes John the missus will have to do it he is about twice the size now. He is 12 weeks on Tuesday. Ive got a load of young ferrets if you know anyone who wants some they will be ready in 3/4 weeks
  12. Mornig Dicky The coat of the wirehaired vizsla develops as they get older, some are born very wiry and they turn out like teddy bears whereas my pup is just starting to show his broken coat around his feet and his face. ive also seen smooth coats out of 2 wire haired parents i suppose its a breed that is still developing so all sorts pop up even long coats. i dont think they get their full coat until they are 2 year old
  13. im still using the ferrets doing a bit pest control in peoples gardens and horse paddocks, it isnt nice gutting rabbits full of young but the job keeps my permission safe for the winter. and to be honest i have a nest of young ferrets that its keeping fed.
  14. Lovely breed of dog as a pet but they have loads of health issues there is a huge row within the kennel club as they are saying over % of the current breeding stock have a genetic flaw relating to skull shape, brain damage etc. Im sure if they are brought up as a worker they may potter on with the terriers but a little cocker would be better
  15. i have never owned a weim but ive seen 3 different dogs in the field and they were ok im not a fan as one of the b*****ds bit me as i walked past its owners car. So if you need a gaurd dog as well as a gundog then thats your breed :0)
  16. What breed of dog im guessing a pointer of some description? I recently bought a vizsla pup and picked it at 3 weeks then visited every week and the poor breeder was run ragged by them its no easy buck breeding a litter and doing the job right. Good luck with them and your selection
  17. The big dog is a working labradoodle lovely dog to work he is just a labrador with hair
  18. Alright John he has settled right in the other dogs have been brilliant maggie despite being a cow with every other dog seems to like puppies. She has come round and we have had no more problems touch wood
  19. Yes Mooch it means John in Hungarian which was my wifes Grandads name. He died a couple of years ago and we said then we would name the next dog after him he was known as Jock but that didnt seem to fit the dog so my clever wife came up with the hungarian equivalent Janos. He has settled right in and is causing chaos in the kitchen as i write he is trying to pull the socks off my feet!
  20. Here are a couple of pics of the new pup Janos (Pronounced Yanosh) Hungarian wirehaired vizsla Gonegos/Kisdon lines. just 8 weeks old i wonder what the future will bring? I know what i hope for but in the meantime we will both have a good time growing up
  21. 20 years ago i hap gsp that was a bugger for whining at the peg. The hprs live to hunt sitting still isnt their cup of tea but i will expect him to do it. Ive just got him home at tea time so i will get some pictures up at some point
  22. Excellent mate, im picking up my vizsla pup on friday and like you ive decided to get this dog right and to be honest i fancy trialling the dog but there is a lot of ground to cover first just looking forward to a lot of fun
