  1. im a dog man i have 2 bitches both very good in their own right but i just understand dogs better or they understand me? I cant explain it just feel more comfortable around my dogs than i do around bitches. Its probably a hangover from my first wife who is the biggest bitch ive ever known
  2. Here are some photos of Janos currently 9 months old and although highly trainable he is nuts at the minute and spends most of his life at high speed. He is a bit taller than i thought he would be creeping up to 27" at the shoulder. Ive found him very switched on to dummy retrieving he is almost manic in his willingness to retrieve. He was a bit unsure about ranging out but he is getting there with the help of a hard hunting lurcher normally i wouldnt have dreamed of running the two together but it seems to have worked. He is just discovering he can find game on his own he flushed a pheasent,
  3. yes Dave put some up im going to talk the wife into getting some photos of Janos done today even though its force 10 out there
  4. just recently had the pleasure of watching a 9 month old border collie mark sets from about 5 yards from the holes she just freezes like a pointer absolutely brilliant. she is a farm collie where i work so i couldnt use her or it might spoil her proper training. My little lurcher marks well but is a busy little dog and allways wants to mooch about
  5. i have tried all ways but i cant get my ferrets to use a litter tray, i even got a corner one but they bulldoze them upside down, shite in the other corner, empty the shavings out
  6. yes thats it ive found its bulk holds the moisture better confining it to the corner better
  7. Ive been using shavings for bedding the bottom of my cages since Adam was a lad but since starting my new job part of which is an equine centre i noticed the stable staff use a small chip wood called easi bed for the bottom of the stalls. Its £6 for a big bale and is very absorbent which is important when i have 5 ferrets in the one big 6'x6'x2' multi tier cage. Although bulkier to dispose of it will be the bedding of choice from now on. normally i compost my used bedding in amongst garden waste then i use the rotted down stuff along my hedgerows i would never put rotted carnivore compost
  8. give her plenty of fresh food and water and stay away from them! she will eat her young or abandon them if upset. I had a young cocker spaniel get into the shed (My fault) and upset a jill this year and the end result was handrearing a litter of which i lost all but one.
  9. i spoke to the lad about the various things said on here, Exercise- the dog gets and hour and half mostly free running a day ( i tend to beleive this as the chap is a wealthy bloke with a lot of spare time). Feeding- he wasnt keen on raw food but has increased the dogs intake and has bought the pemmican bar, Cold- he will get the dog a neoprene vest for inbetween drives. However i nearly pissed myself laughing yesterday when he turned up without the dog as his missus wouldnt let him bring it shooting as it had a runny nose! honest to god it nearly spoiled his Christmas arguing with her!
  10. Matthew do not get a labradoodle! they are not hypoallergenic as some people believe, I have 3 of them and even though my three dont shed hair i know a lot that do. Ive also rescued for the the labradoodle trust 3 puppies (Over different periods of time) that where sold as hypoallergenic and the owners unfortunately couldnt live with them. Heartbreaking for them and upsetting for a yound dogs life. The dog in my avatar is a great gundog however i dont know if its just luck that he turned out that way or a gradual exposure of shooting experiences but we have bred a pup primarily as my wifes
  11. Im going to give barf another go i think just for the vizsla and see if it makes a difference to him, i have tried it before but my missus wasnt keen and she did a lot of the feeding at the time so it fell by the way side, i will let you know how he gets on with it. All the best lads for Christmas and the New year
  12. i know hydration is important but there has been that much surface water about the dogs have had ample oppurtunity to drink, i know what you mean about feeding dry food my vizsla cant get enough to drink and pisses like a horse all the time so this week he is coming off dry food to see if it helps. mind at 8 months he is like a whirling derbish and doesnt know how to sit still!
  13. Just a discussion point really. My mate has a 2 year old GWP nice dog works really hard as in it covers a lot of distance. Its not too skinny but could do with a bit of beef on it. 2 weeks ago when out shooting it had a bit of a wobbler just before the break for lunch , probably a dip in sugar levels we thought so he had a couple of sausage rolls and some bonio biscuits and went on to work fine for the rest of the day. yesterday the dog packed in just gave up, left his owner who was beating and came to sit next to me on the peg tail between his legs and looking thouroughly miserable.
  14. There seems to be huge differences physically between the wire and smooth vizslas,i have only met a couple of smooths and they seem a lot finer boned and faster moving than the wires.
  15. with a 2 inch cartridge they are no more noisy than a springer air rifle, with a 3 inch cartridge they are a lot louder. but the noise doesnt travel, i love mine its a bit like shooting a drainpipe to begin with but i love it now. Sorry for high jacking mate but i do love this little gun
  16. Not all at once just a gradual progression, but even at 8 weeks he should be coming in when called and be able to sit obviously its all just as and when but when he does it give him big fuss, its all about conditioning the pup
  17. dont get confused he should be able to sit and come when called on command now, retrieving should be a game at all times and get him lead trained so he walks at heel. When he has the sit and recall move on to the stop (sitting at the whistle or/and hand signal) moving further away until he does it at a distance Dont let him hunt too much unless your confident you can stop him. but at all times make it enjoyable and try and finish on a high.
  18. let her watch another dog picking it up and then get her to do it, jealousy sometimes works. The big dog in my avatar is a b*****d for owning every shot bird on the shoot or the moor. i really have to keep an eye on him at the peg cos the crafty b*****d will mark a bird and then slope off. will she retrieve a dummy blind? if so start again with a feathered dummy and then cold game and then the real thing. its a tiny glitch she will undoubtedly click by herself one day. your absolutely right not to make a big thing of it though take your time and im sure you will work it out
  19. have a good time and form that all important bond
  20. get him on the recall whistle straight away, just a few pips to get him to come in for his dinner will get him responding very easily we have a litter of pups at the minute who all come running at 8 weeks old when the whistle is blown
  21. I want to put a few birds down on the farm where i work, 210 acres of big fields bordered by hedges and a few copses bordering a river. I will be able to get some cover strips in next year. We are also planting small copses all over the place The birds will just be for a bit of rough shooting for myself and training the dogs. The ground at the moment has resident coveys of partridges and the odd wandering pheasent can always be found. We have a few rabbits about and an acre lake full of duck. To be honest i would just like to see more birds about, how many should i put down? and how
  22. get your name down at Roy Bebbingtons Gonegos kennel near Richmond, North Yorks, his dogs are spot on. I was going to get one from Roy but Pams came along first and it was about having a dog ready for next season so i took a chance. Pams bitch was a bit bouncy and not a worker although her lines showed a lot of hungarian import. Whereas i had met Dweezil the sire at Roys and fell in love with him a direct import he showed all the promise he has gone on to acheive. Janos really wants to work for me and that is a sign of a good relationship in the field in the future.
