  1. If your FAC has been endorsed with the word 'Only' next to any named quarry then you would be contravening the conditions for the firearm in question - thankfully home office guidance to the feds is to avoid using 'only' as it's usage can cause problems with this country's citizens freedom under law. You may recall a few years ago when certain 22 centrefires were passed for muntjac and chinese water deer in England & Wales that the forces advised that anyone who's fac was already granted for fox etc wouldn't need to have it endorsed with deer - this wasn't due to them being helpful - i
  2. 22 wmr ammo is the same price as 17 hmr. You can also go semi-auto with the 22. I use the 33 gr VMax's in my Rem 597 and accuracy is absolutely spot on with no worries about a lack of killing power for Charlie - the bullet goes in and the fox comes out. Only real advantage I find with the 17 is not having to use holdover as much - horses for courses really
  3. I have a Remington 11-87 'Special Purpose' 5 shot with the kit to change to easily change to 8 or 3 shot with extra extended chokes etc - fantastic gun but I'm in Cardiff
  4. Baldie Don't want to start this all going again...Oh..and the letter is pretty good by the way, but did anyone ever get to the bottom of this shooting at night business? I've been shooting day and night for 35 or more years and don't know anything about night shooting written permissions! For many, although not all, I do have written permissions, but please don't tell me I've been breaking some night shooting law most of my life. Deker We're all probably guilty of breaking the law - how many of us don't have "Game" specified on our FAC's yet shoot Rabbits at night? The classific
  5. 10 Acres of backstops - I don't foresee that they can possibly refuse you
  6. Not sure where you're coming from re the 22 WMR not being a good foxing round - the round (not calibre) is absolutely awesome, the bullet goes in and the fox comes out, especially the 30 gr V Max's I have never had anything but instant kills and It's often my gun of choice when I need it to be quieter than my centrefires as it does moderate well, not silent obviously, but still pretty quiet - ditto sanction from the Police???
  7. It's hard to generalise but the (real working) Weimeraner is the more likely to tackle foxes etc. My latest vizsla bitch is gentle and softly retrieves dead game but if anything has a go at her then it's look out; the last Saturday of the season last year a fox was shot on a pheasant drive and she was sent to retrieve it but unbeknown to me it hadn't been shot cleanly and it went to bite her - next thing one snapped fox where she'd shaken it so hard it's spine had broken - brought it back looking like a bag of rags. Talking to the Danes recently and they're reporting more and more weimeraner
  8. We've all made this mistake over the years, but there's so many factors to take into consideration with different rounds that you should always zero your rifle with the rounds you intend to use, whether it's as low powered as an air rifle or something as high powered as a 338 LM.
  9. They look similar to a GWP but are a totally different breed. Lovely dogs though; I've shot over a wonderful bitch that's no longer in the UK, but I don't have much experience of the dogs other than one in Holland that was an absolute cracker. The Korthals is a very good dog for wildfowl and thankfully they havn't been over here long enough for them to be ruined. If you want a dog that's great with children you might be better off with a vizsla from good working stock. Regards - see http://www.korthalsgriffonclub.co.uk for further info. I'm running in the Korthals clubs Grouse poin
  10. Couldn't agree more - I have both of these .22 rimfires & wouldn't be without either - the semi auto 22 WMR comes into it's own at this time of year for young foxes, but so does the subsonic 22 L/R for bunnies.
  11. Couldn't agree more re a Beretta - the 303 is, in my opinion, probably the best ever semi auto they've made. Like most of the responses re choke and cartridges, it's so very dependant upon what type of shooting you'll be doing, shooting flushed foxes, calling them in etc; whatever you decide upon, try patterning the shot first (shoot at a large piece of cardboard or similar)as all guns are different and prefer different loads/pellet sizes. Enjoy!
  12. There's also another programme on Sunday night at 10.05 on more4 re similar subject. ATB
  13. If I remember correctly the letter from the Home Office was issued to clarify that Clay Pigeon shooting was an acceptable purpose, but ONLY when the FAC shotgun had been authorised for another purpose e.g. practical shotgun or pest control; and that clay pigeon shooting was then to AUTOMATICALLY be added. Some forces has misinterpreted (no surprise)the legislation and were happily granting "clays" on their own. I'll see if I can dig out a copy and post further details on here.
  14. The form is confusing as it was set up to relate to rifles, hence the questions re amount of cartridges etc. and it's always better to make sure everythings correct otherwise delays are caused. With mine I just put "high capacity 12 bore shotgun" and purchased a Remington 11-87 that is set up for 5 shot, has an extension tube to make it an 8 shot, and also has an insert that turns it into a standard 3 shot. Having had a nightmare getting my local force to agree to mine for mammals, and having researched well into the surrounding legislation, I can confirm that there is nothing in law (firear
  15. Is the part of the guidance that the police are relying on to get away with imposing their own arbitrary rules and conditions. I've got over 15 years of rifle experience in different calibres, and the FEO was talking about imposing mentoring on me. Erm... I don't THINK so mr! I can see where you're coming from but, and I may be wrong to presume that, as is the case with South Wales Police currently, the mentoring condition was applied without prior discussion or knowledge of the applicant. However this so called mentoring condition is starting to be applied arbitrarily by numerous forc
  16. Not another police force acting above the law - surely? This mentoring condition has no basis in law and neither is it not part of the Home Office guidance to the police (which in itself is only Guidance and not the law) on how the administering of firearms applications et cetera should be undertaken by the police. The guidance was issued to try and ensure parity (consistency of practice)between all the forces of the UK (ok - stop laughing!)and sets out certain conditions that are proscribed i.e. must be applied and others that can be applied. The HO do however state that the wording of the su
  17. The same things just happened to my Meteor - perhaps it's something to do with this unusually dry and hot weather?
