If your FAC has been endorsed with the word 'Only' next to any named quarry then you would be contravening the conditions for the firearm in question - thankfully home office guidance to the feds is to avoid using 'only' as it's usage can cause problems with this country's citizens freedom under law. 22 wmr ammo is the same price as 17 hmr. You can also go semi-auto with the 22. I use the 33 gr VMax's in my Rem 597 and accuracy is absolutely spot on with no worries about a lack of killing power for Charlie - the bullet goes in and the fox comes out. Only real advantage I find with the 17 is not having to use holdover as much - horses for courses really

Not sure where you're coming from re the 22 WMR not being a good foxing round - the round (not calibre) is absolutely awesome, the bullet goes in and the fox comes out, especially the 30 gr V Max's I have never had anything but instant kills and It's often my gun of choice when I need it to be quieter than my centrefires as it does moderate well, not silent obviously, but still pretty quiet - ditto sanction from the Police???

It's hard to generalise but the (real working) Weimeraner is the more likely to tackle foxes etc. My latest vizsla bitch is gentle and softly retrieves dead game but if anything has a go at her then it's look out; the last Saturday of the season last year a fox was shot on a pheasant drive and she was sent to retrieve it but unbeknown to me it hadn't been shot cleanly and it went to bite her - next thing one snapped fox where she'd shaken it so hard it's spine had broken - brought it back looking like a bag of rags. Talking to the Danes recently and they're reporting more and more weimeraner

We've all made this mistake over the years, but there's so many factors to take into consideration with different rounds that you should always zero your rifle with the rounds you intend to use, whether it's as low powered as an air rifle or something as high powered as a 338 LM.

They look similar to a GWP but are a totally different breed. Lovely dogs though; I've shot over a wonderful bitch that's no longer in the UK, but I don't have much experience of the dogs other than one in Holland that was an absolute cracker. The Korthals is a very good dog for wildfowl and thankfully they havn't been over here long enough for them to be ruined. Couldn't agree more - I have both of these .22 rimfires & wouldn't be without either - the semi auto 22 WMR comes into it's own at this time of year for young foxes, but so does the subsonic 22 L/R for bunnies.

Couldn't agree more re a Beretta - the 303 is, in my opinion, probably the best ever semi auto they've made. Like most of the responses re choke and cartridges, it's so very dependant upon what type of shooting you'll be doing, shooting flushed foxes, calling them in etc; whatever you decide upon, try patterning the shot first (shoot at a large piece of cardboard or similar)as all guns are different and prefer different loads/pellet sizes.
