  1. Yes, we said as much to the breeder! She didn't seem to know what hip scores were, despite working the dogs, which might explain why she went on to breed from the sire. Worrying. They were labrador pups, by the way. Kiwi, interesting that some hips can be so uneven - injury or otherwise - could an injury cause that much difference in scores? It's just so risky breeding from a sire like that and worrying that it seems to have happened. On the other hand, I know what you mean about there being a lot of the percentage from upbringing etc. Still...3/34?! Ruth.
  2. Hi again all, My partner went to look at pups the other day and the sire had hips of 3:34!!! His parents were both 0:0, as was the dam. Why could such an uneven score happen? The breeder hadn't had him from a pup so didn't know of injury, etc. Partner's not going for a pup for obvious reasons, but it's got me thinking. Any ideas? Ruth.
  3. Have heard that feeding very little and often for a couple of weeks twinned with double the exercise helps, then cut down the number of feeds per day. I've never had to use it though so if anyone's tried it feedback'd be good. Atb, Ruth.
  4. Yeah I'm with kiwi on the straw - my lab used to pull any bed she had into the run and set about wrecking it with her kennel mate just looking on in bewilderment! With straw, she was fine and cosy when the cold hit. She just seemed to prefer no bed in the summertime and slept quite happily on the raised platform or even outside when it was warm. As for eating shite, he might grow out of it but it's quite a risk - might be worth giving him a scruffing.
  5. Hi Andrew. Glad it's working for you the advice the other guys gave about wrapping the lead round the neck worked really well for my partner's dog so worth a try too. Other training at 6 months -some needs still to be play training, especially recall. Stand in a small space, have her sit in front of you, take a step back then call her in to you. If she runs round you in circles or doesn't come, step back till she does, or hide where she can't see you then call her. Lots of praise but no treats when she comes to you. Sit stay is also another good one to work on, sit her in front of you
  6. Wow beautiful place when you say rehab session, did your dog not like water before then? If so that's impressive! Looks like a lovely dog, good luck with him. Ruth.
  7. She's now gone to a good keepering home. Thanks for the interest. Ruthi.
  8. Hi, She's grandsired by FTCH Bryn Dylan, sired by Caegwyn Llyr but her mother's just a good working dog with a bit of FTCH blood in her, and isn't health tested, hence not asking too much for Mirrin (550 but good working home soonish is more important - I don't want her cooped up in her kennel day in day out). I've attached her pedigree for anyone wanting to look into it. She's basics done, but we're working on the stop whistle at the moment. She'll stop (and sit) about 5 yards from me, increasing every day. I haven't done much work on her retrieving but she's a natural enough retriev
  9. Have you tried heeling off lead in a really small space, like a back yard? Sounds like she's sticking two fingers up at you a bit, or just getting very distracted. She's still only very young though, so I'd probably keep working on the lead until she's absolutely clear on what to do, build in some sits/stays on the lead, then when she's sitting, slip the lead off and back on, then increase the time the lead's off for so that she gets used to lead off = not running about. If she runs off, plant her back in the sit and go backwards a bit, decrease the time the lead's off her for before moving fo
  10. Hi again all, My situation's changed and I now have a full time job, my gamekeeper partner's off to Scotland and my lovely little lab will just be stuck in a kennel all day so I've come to the decision that to sell her would be the best thing. I've got an ad for her in the for sale section on here so if you know anyone looking please let them know there's a fab working 12 month old on here. Thanks, and loads of thanks to you all for all your help answering my questions about her in the past.
  11. Wow, thanks veyr much to you all, lots to think about. Interesting what you say about getting up to a 12 bore as soon as possible, and about a shortened stock...will look around and see what like Massive thanks - 'specially to Deker for working out my babble!! Ruthi
  12. He's a bonny dog mate! Can I be nosy and ask where you got him as a friend of mine's after a really easy lab, he's down near Cheshire... Good luck with him. Ruth.
  13. Yeah, I think I was confused too Sorry people, had a dim moment meant from 20bore up to 12 bore!!!! Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look round... the young Olympian sounds like a bit of an inspiration...keep telling myself...if she can lift it so can I....if she can lift it so can I. La la la !
  14. hi, So far I've only shot with a little 20 bore but my mate says I could go up to a 20 bore if right ammunition was used. Can anyone tell me about a good (and cheapish) make of lightweight 20 bore I might be able to try? I'm not very strong at all so a shorter barrel might be better? Help!!! I'm a complete novice
  15. Thanks mate, realyl want a good home for her! She's one of the bonniest looking dogs I've seen. (but i reckon I'm biased!)
  16. hi, I'm having to sell my lovely black bitch because I'm now in a full time job and can't train her up to the standard she needs. I want her to go to someone who'll take her for what she is, a very bold, driven, but very loyal and quick learning bitch. Easy in the right, firmer-but-not-harsh sort of hands. She's up to the point of basics done, starting on stop whistle. She'll do everything on the lead, sit and stay close to me off it and heel off the lead too. Odd bit of disobedience which disappears if you're firm. Retrieving is ok, soft things to hand and moving on to dummies which s
  17. She's gorgeous, looks like she might be quite biddable? Good look with her mate. Ruth
  18. Brilliant! Thanks to you all going to ring round a few people you've mentioned and see what like. Be good to sort her out, and learn myself too. Ruth x
  19. Hi just wondering if anyone could recommend a good trainer who's willing to teach me and dog I've got. I'm near thirsk and northallerton so can travel down to york and up to middlesbrough, across to ripon really. I'm going to investigate Les Dixon of mountgrace but want others just in case. Ta Ruth.

  21. It looks great, impressive what you using for drainage? We're in a temporary tied cottage that's really a holiday cottage with some kennels stuck onto it and the drainage is awful! A right pain to clear out lol. Good luck with the rest- looks amazing Ruth
  22. Thanks to you all so much for your answers, glad someone else thought a belt with the lead probably wasn't a good move! Definitely back to basics then and make it all a bit more interesting fingers crossed, will let you know how I get on. Ruthi
  23. My 10 mth lab bitch has always been bold but lately has started a bunny hop on the sit and stay which has been excellent in the past. She'll do it for so long then hop round me in circles. Can't even let her off the lead now as she's stopped responding. I've been told by a trainer to be harsher using a smack of the lead as scruffing has no effect. Any thoughts? She also plays with or doesn't retrieve retrieves now, so I'm worried about progressing to cold game in case she chews it! Sounds like a case of teenagedom gone horribly wrong so back to training on the lead, basics? Or progress so
  24. Potshot, sorry to hear this, will keep all ears to the ground for you and ask the partner to do the same. Hope you find soon. Ruthi
