  1. Hi Daz Yes I have owned a HW35 for a few years now. .22 It is a classic gun, 11fp + accurate and I have never had a problem with it. Its on the heavy side but as I shoot from a rested position whenever possible its not much of a problem. I tend to use it for hunting vermin out to about 30-35 yards, and that is more my limit with this gun rather than the guns limitation. Like all springers you have to have a gentle hold and a good follow through to get the best results. It also has a great trigger that can be adjusted to suite your preference. I would certainly be happy top recommend
  2. Hi Guys I just thought that I would share this with you. I have a small permission only 4.5 acres that are horse paddocks that back onto a small housing estate one side and a disused railway bank on the other that is almost impenatrable with brambels and thorns. The owner also rears prize/rare bread hens that have been sharing their feed with some wild pheasants and ferral pigeons. Any way I have had a few attempts to pot a few of these free loaders but to no avail until today. I asked the owner if I could shoot from inside an old horsebox that sits nice and close to where the chickens f
  3. Hi, Ditto to the previous response. I have a 3-9X40 on a HW 35. Have used it extensively (18 months), for rabbiting at circa 30 yards and insome pretty mucky weather including freezing conditions. No problems, good scope, good service. ATB Dave
  4. Sorry Andy I don't fully agree. Yes if you hit them in the head and drill through them with a .177 then it is lights out almost instantly. However, if you drill through almost any other area of the body the pellet is failing to transfer its energy and thus your quarry may escape to die a more slow death. Please remember a 40 yard flight may put it over someone elses land where you can not retrieve, or worse complete the dispatch. My experience with a .22 is that they transfer more energy and thus do more damage for anything that is less than a perfect shot. Enough said, we all have our oppini
  5. Hi Mate, Good luck with your experimentation and let us know how you get on. Just got a tin of Bisley Magnums and intend to try them on Monday, I had a word with the local gunsmith in sheffield, he seems a damn good guy and provides advice which is honest rather than putting money in his pocket. I explained my concerns regarding over penetration and he advised the Bisley Magnums, and has he is the second person to recommend them. They get the next slot for testing. ATB Dave
  6. Hi Guys Well I have now put three different brands through the AA S410 .177. The results so far: Air Arms Field Diablo : 30m Zero, unaided prone 10 shot group, 1 contiguous hole with an approximate 9mm diameter. JSB Exacts: 30m Zero unaided prone 9 shot group, 1 flyer, but about a 12mm diameter. RWS Super Hollow: 30m zero, unaided prone, all over the place, I cant believe it, must have had 4 or 5 flyers. These pellets works so well in my Weirhauch WH 35 Springer, and they are so good for pest control. But in the AA S410 they are next to useles. Next step is to try a few
  7. Hi Dogger The HW 35 is still going strong, it is a classic, fantastic reliability, engineering and accuracy for a full powered springer. A new one these days is about £225 from a traditional gun dealer. My now uses my HW35, I have had it for about five years and never had any problems with it. I use RWS Super Hollow Points for hunting and I have to say it it very effective up to 35+ yards. That is more my limit than the guns. I can manage groupings of 12mm prone at 35 yards almost as good as my PCP. My son and I use it mainly for vermin control and its ceretainly taken care of mos
  8. Phantom, Congratulations mate. Its hard enough getting permissions, but even harder loosing them. But your not going to!!!!!! Well done!!! ATB Dave
  9. Well done mate, you did better than me. I hope your enjoy your duck. It always tastes better whern you have personaly added a bit of lead. Enjoy your duck supper. ATB Dave
  10. Thanks, Phantom, Edgar, Lee85, Maty J and andyfr 1968, I have just got back from having a go at them. I have to say they are going to be harder than I thought. Got to within about 50 Yards of them, and they took flight. Didn't come back either. I want to get within at least 30 yards before I take a shot as I realy want to nail them with a head shot only. A body wound on a bird that size will be a slow death. So the plan is to get up tomorrow before first light and get into position before they even flight into the pond. On the positive side, I nailed two squirells this morning, I h
  11. Hi Phantom, Thanks for the reply, In season is not an issue. I'm not about to start taking liberties with the law, good way to loose licence These ducks have not been hunted for years, can get to within 20 - 30 yards. Love duck: yum yum Trying with an air rifle appeals, rather than shotgun. On leave tomorrow moring, rifle charged. early start [bANNED TEXT] sun-up I will let you know how I get on. ATB Dave
  12. has not set their status

  13. donnyman, thank you for the debait, I have gone for the pump,I need the exercise. all the best and bring on the vermin. regards Dave
  14. Hi Dave 105e I hope you enjoyed your evening with the 4X4. Where, i live that is what the farmers and close friends do. No, im not in to it, I'm new to the area and trying to establish myself, but those boys do have the fun. I'm just twitter and bisted because I can't get that much land, guns or sex. Errrrrrrrrrrm did'nt say sex. ATB Dave
  15. Thank you Phantom, An excellent write up, and for a novice an excellent learning trial. I will be much more watchfull when cleaning rabbits in the future. ATB Dave
  16. Thank you Iamduvern. You are correct there are a number of relatively inexspensive shotguns that you can put a moderator on or buy one that's got it inbuilt. But. I don't have a FAC licence and I like the idea of shooting with a rifle for something larger than a rabbit. Fac may be the way forward, but, for the moment "to duck or not to duck". Regards Dave
  17. Hi Wuzzy Thank you for the reply. Sense and sensibility says Shot Gun but stalking and covert with an air rifle is more fun. Still expect to get howled at for suggesting ducks with an Air-rifle. ATB Dave
  18. Hey Wuzzy, that's my birthday> May be I'm a born hunter, or born too late? Na'h can't be, I'm enjoying life too much. But, still "to duck or not to duck that is the question" ? ATB Dave
  19. Hi Folks Does anyone have any experience of hunting ducks with a non FAC air rifle? I have just got a new permission, only 9 acres but it has a small pond which seems to attract 20-30 mallards each morning. The owner doesnt want me using a shotgun as the land is quite close to housing and doesnt want any grief from the locals due to noise. I could use a moderator but fancied ago with an air rifle. Head shot only, .22 or .177. Let me know if you have had any succcess failures Thanks and happy hunting
  20. Hi Folks I thought that the proposed change in law was about primarily aimed at improving the control of Air Guns. Making it a legal requirement to ensure safe storage and control of a fire arm. At the moment an air rifle can be stored in almost any-place and can result in un-authorised and yes unsuitable users having relatively easy access to a fire arm. If I understand the proposed change in law correctly, it would make the owner liable if the gun falls into the wrong hands and thay have not taken adequate precautions to safely store the gun. I have mixed feelings about further laws
  21. Once again many thanks for the response, I will definitely be trying a few of the pellets that you have suggested and will let you know how I get on. Happy hunting David
  22. Hi Wuzzy/AndyFR Thank you both for the feedback, I'm currently using the AA Fields that I got with the gun, I am very happy with the grouping, achieving about a 10mm group at 35M from an unaided prone position. This is good for me, so I'm happy with the combo. Made first kill with the new gun this morning, took a Maggie at about 38m, nice head shot did not even flutter just "lights out". Upon examination found pellet had entered and exited with little evidence of expansion. Still concerned that for not head shots, (and we all make them, me perhaps more than others), this pellet would not
  23. Many thanks for the responses, I will certainly give the pellets mentioned a try and see what results i get. Now all I need is for this rain to stop so that I can get out. Although we have a light dusting of snow this morning in the hills so that will keep the rabbits down until dusk. Thanks again David
  24. Hi Folks Just wanted to say hello, I'm a new member, have been shooting for a number of years mainly with shotgun, but have recently been undertaking pest control on private land with a HW 35. .22 RWS Super Hollow Point. I tend to shoot out at a max to 40yds. I have recently purchased an Air Arms s410 .177 which came with a tin of AA Field pellets which I have used for zeroing in at 30 yards. Does any one have any recommedations for pellets to use with this gun for pest control? I'm very happy with the RWS SHP in the Wierauch out to 35 yards but would appreciate any advice on the .177
