whats a good air rifle for a 9yr old?
silentshot1 replied to kanny's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I started out with a Meteor, that said, there's always there's always the Rat Catcher... light, chea and always under estimated, mine's still going at a steady 9 ft lb's after 12 years. -
Cracking!! Nice work.

A gimp suit can work wonders! Failing that a pair of jeans, barbour shirt and beaten, 25 year old, father hand me down, barbour jacket with my BASC pin in the collar works for me. The most important thing is that you are half way there, awesome job so far!! When you meet, firm handshake, look him in the eye, small talk about changeable weather, ask about how the weird weather will affect crop yeilds, how much damage are vermin doing and where, insurance, etc. You want to show you are going to be a regular help and not a twice a month wonder. Imagine going to tea with a girl friends

Thanks all! You can't beat that Rekord trigger, it's simply awesome and still the bar that all others aspire to get to.

Having all but thrown my bath water out after my R-10 and S410 (only 6 months after service from AA) have both basically failed in one way or another, I have once again fallen back on the ever trusty 22 year old (ish) venom tuned HW 77 .177 with it's equally aged 3 - 9 x Kassner wide scope. I guess I've treated the HW 77 a bit like that girl we all have in our past. The one that perhaps we never treated that well, that perhaps we pushed to one side as soon a a better offer came along, but found ourselves inevitably calling after the latest relationship finished. That girl that that was fun

Park Street guns used to be pretty good... Not lived there for a few years mind.

someone's going to get a bargain there!! They're awesome guns and if tuned even better.

Hi all Forgive me if tihs is a daft question, but how long are pigeons interested in feeding on drillings for? Went up rabbiting on the farm with the airgun last night and saw a good 100 or so pigeons at dusk, dining out as the tractor was still in the 120 acre field! Is it worth trying to decoy them on Saturday with the Shottie or do you think they will have moved on? Thanks for any advise

I have similar open ground with no approach cover and a down hill slan in parts of my shoot. As Tony says it's crawling time! That said, I did get within 45 meters yesteday, by just taking it very easy on foot. I then dropped on to my arse and 'butt shuffled' for another 6-7 meters, with no cover, just watching to ensure the rabbits are not spooked, then freezing if they look nervous. Took me about 45 mins to accomplish then was thwarted for an hour by a spooked family of four roe dee who barked, stamped and legged it, loved the challenge though. If you try this approach cover EVERYTHI

Check out Accuspell's post, he seems to know a bag load about Theobans. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/238161-theoben-fenman/page__p__2499568__hl__+theoben%20+scirocco__fromsearch__1?do=findComment&comment=2499568

Pigeon decoying can be brilliant sport if it works, or a few hours to sit outdoors in a field, if not! Have look at this http://airgunhunting.jigsy.com/decoying for a couple of ideas. I'm going to try and decoy over grazing fields and newly drilled wheat this weekend, hopefully using just flocked shells and a couple of full body decoys. As with most shooting, it's all about watching feeding habbits/times/spots and entry/exit points, so watch for flight lines nd set up underneath them within range of a feeding spot or watering hole and sitty tree! Good luck with it!

I gave up on AA Field's for a while. I was throwing away every other pellet as it was deformed to hell, in two seperate tins from seperate dealers.

great write uo and pictures... thanks.

Brilliant christening!

Never been a fan of the Air Wolf but that one I love! Nice shooting as well!

I've been thinking about getting a bi pod recently but rarely find myself shooting prone and wonder if the balance would throw me off when sitting. I use a sack full of decoys to zero off prone, but only PCPs, otherwise it's freehand, sitting, flesh to flesh with the HW 77. That said, as my hunting write up suggests, most of my shooting involves very little cover so wonder if prone on a bi pod would be more productive. I agree though, I think if you rely on a bi pod then you are possibly a bit lazy and maybe missing out on part of the buzz and skill of air rifle shooting over shot guns

Thanks mate, normally a brilliant gun, so may be the pellets, just off out to play with it again having cleaned the barrel and with a tin of Superdomes.

Been a while since I've put anything up, but thought I should t least pull my weight! Ok, the weather was looking fantastic, Her Majesty had given me the thumbs up and apart from a quick charge to Greenfields to pick up some low scope mounts for the HW 77, the day looked like it might be mine! As ever, last minute chores (sadly not mine) manged to destroy most of the morning! Finally got my boots on the farm at 13.00, with the HW 77 and the R-10 in tow. The plan was to zero the HW 77 quickly then decoy some pigeons with the R-10 until about four, followed with a hit on a couple of

I hope you 'followed through' correctly!

Great advise and can't really offer that much more apart from saying that the Ratty is a great little light weight, medium range gun, but I would go for an HW springer first, every time. If you stick with hunting, the HW will grow with your abilities and knowledge, the quality is pretty awesome from scratch, can be improved with a tune and although you probably will buy another gun at some point after, you will find it hard to beat as a springer. The Ratty is great but not quite the same!

Just watched that in HD - you can clearly see the pellets arc as it flys, great footage!

Hi mate, in all honesty I would call Sandwell Field Sports (no. on the website) and speak to them. There are other talented people out there, but these guys are tried and tested. My HW77 was tuned by Venom (now V-Mach), they do DIY tuning kits which might be worth looking at for circa £70.00, but don't start trying unless you are sure you can finish (don't ask me how I know this!!). Just a thought, but say the tune cost £50 - £70, which seems the norm. If your rifle is in good condition, you may be able to trade it in for £100. Save an extra £50 and you could look at a second ha -
what tuning kit for my weihrauch hw77k

As Bill mentioned above and from experience, unless you are handy at DIY and have a chrono, I'd send it to Sandwell Field Sports!
