  1. Have a look on the "living off the land and game cooking" section on here!
  2. Nice story! I don't go in for big numbers either.Same as fishing from an isolated piece of coast or pigeon shooting in the woods. For me the enjoyment is in pitting my wits against rabbits, mullet or pigeons in their own environment. And as for the thrill the first time YOUR ferret bolts a rabbit into a net which YOU made! Nothing like it! Mooster.
  3. He'll never forget what you have shown him. Girls, booze etc will come and go when he grows up but he will never loose the urge to go into the field amd hunt!
  4. insect repellant made me laugh the most!
  5. How well do you know his previous owner mate? "handled to the best of my knowledge" suggests there is a possibility he may never have been handled at all? If that was the case and he is now shut in a shed all day alone, you have your work cut out making friends with him! I would try givng him more space to run and play during the day coupled with loads of confident handling and distractions to take his eye off your fingers.Good luck and don't reach for the .22 too quickly.I had ana aggressive jill that took months to cure but patience and experimenting often do the hob better. Good luck.Moo
  6. Bad luck mate! You don't say how many were in the party but you story gives an image of a rather crowded and noisy affair which might be why the bunnies were reluctant to surface. Don't be discouraged though.I ferret alone so thankfully nobody is ever there to see the cock ups I make! Better luck next time, travel light and never talk!
  7. Thanks for that John.Well to answer the question then Ditch,it seems like the rabbits I have encountered lately are most likely to be in the early stages rather than recovering.I had not realised that death came so soon.Have always asumed the disease was long and lingering. As I said, the eyes appear merely closed over with no signs of swelling at all and no other symptoms.I can only asume that visual symptoms may vary somewhat. Morbid subject I know,so aplogies.Have a good new year, off to me pit now.Mooster.
  8. To be honest mate,if you need to come on here and ask how you get a ferret to go down a hole you really need to be asking if this is the right pet for you. How do you walk a dog?how do you feed a cat?,how do you ride a horse?how do you catch a fish? how do you shoot a pigeon? Best thing to do is to read a lot of books from the library,do some searches on this site and get some experience of ferreting with a friend or someone who has kept them before. Otherwise you are wasting your time with an animal which will demand your attention and care for the next ten years 356 days a year! Good luck
  9. Here in south Devon I've found three blind rabbits in the last two weeks. One sat in a hedge which I was ferreting and two last night running around in a country lane last night with eyes fully closed over. I am fully aware that mixy causes blindness but the one in the hedge I managed to knock on the head and it had no other symptoms of mixy on it's body, appearing otherwise healthy. No sores, firm flesh, healthy pelt. Two last night appeared fit and with good hearing when i stalked and squeaked them as well as loads of energy to run from my sofa softee Jack Russell! I'm just wondering wether t

FFS. Same old story in this country....kids with loads of money in their pockets."let's buy a leather sofa","lets buy a massive plasma tv",now what shall we do? "let's have a baby named after a footballer","let's get a big dog and call him Tyson or something". Very, very sad state of affairs.
  12. Had a look at some of the links on there....beautiful dogs in action. Thanks.
  13. Excellent videos. I wish I had known how to remove tendons from a pheasant drumstick before. One thing he didn't do was cut out the pheasants bum from the pelvic bone.I always do this as i can't stand any taint of poo in my grub!
  14. When I was working as a mechanic in a big dealership we had one bloke who specialised in water leaks which took him all his time to sort. It's no easy task and water can be running in from one end of the car only to be found collecting at the other end. I spent hours locked in the boot with a torch as an apprentice waiting for water to come in! One of the most common things apart from torn/split doors seals was this... Water hitting the front door windows either runs down the outside or finds its way inside the door cavity.(the space between the metal outer door and the inner plastic/wood
  15. I never thought of boiling first before taking meat off bones.Takes ages otherwise.Thanks.
  16. The poachers handbook/the new poachers handbook and/or the gamekeeper by Ian Niall.
  17. I too have always loved reading such tales.I think most of the ones you quote i've read in Iain Nial's books. I love the quotes about wild windy nights when everyone stays in except the poacher who buttons his huge old coat about himself, whistles to his dog and makes off into the night. The stuff my dreams are made of! What about the raisins with horse hair threaded through which get caught in the pheasants throat. When you turn up he is going mad trying to remove the obstruction from his throat and doesn't notice you behind him. Great stories for a windy wet night!
  18. Lovely to see...pity we can't hear them singing as well!
  19. That's the one.................many thanks to you!
  20. I find "little and often" is the trick. My jills are funny with whole carcass butif i leave a few bits of rabbit chopped up (bones, brains, fur etc) they will eat it if they are hungry. I gave mine some pigeon carcass chopped up two days ago.(i usually feed them rabbit about 9pm). The next evening they were out waiting for their feed as usual.I checked for stored up bones etc and found the little buggers still had a secret store of pigeon livers, legs, wings etc. I got the impression they had decided to store the pigeon and come out for the usual rabbit so I did not feed them last night. Gues
  21. A few months back someone posted a link to a recording of a little Irish girl making a telephone call to various businesses. I wanted to let the family hear it as it was heart warming and hilarious but cant find it on general talk anywhere. Would anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.Mooster.
  22. Devon rib of beef.Best bit of meat on the bone...ever!
  23. Wow! it never ceases to amaze me how much individual ferrets vary in their behaviour. Do you have to pick her out of the box and encourage her back underground every time?
  24. Ever tried to sit down and talking quietly after running through an assault course? Ever tried explaining what has just happened after witnessing a six car pile up? Ever tried sleeping in a dark room after running a half marathon? It just won't happen, you are too "hyped up". Ferrets are the same. They have just spent the last 10-20 minutes running around trying to kill something in a dark alien territory. If you must pick her up,show her your knuckles to sniff at first and wait till her tail has settled down.
