Funny you should raise this topic as I was going to put up a post about mincers this week. I remember Ditch shitter advising that the "chub" dog food you can buy is good for ferrets as it contains minced up bones which are great for ferrets digestion. I realised that I was wasting a lot of rabbit carcass after removing all the meat for myself and the ferrets and remembered my mother using the old fashioned mincer to mince meat when I was a kid.(I think everyhousehold had one in the 50's and 60's.) I had to search loads of charity shops and eventually found one. After all the easy meat has

Good effort Finny. I use a lot of shop bought nylon nets although I learned from a member on here on how to make my own which makes the capture 100 times more satisfying I can tell you! Try persevering with the nylon ones, the knack is to untangle them by pulling the rings away from eachother and keep them stretched out like that but tied together in the middle when carrying. My Jills are quite small and can fit through the mesh wearing collars although they accasionally like to play with the nets in the mouth of the hole. Also I find that time spent clearing any thorns or brambles away fro

Make sure you tell your local police who will be the first port of call for someone finding your ferret. Good luck. Mooster.

Hi Gollum. All my ferrets occasionally play and drag the nets, both old and young. They sometimes mess around and sometimes work hard, just like people! You describe her as your little jill, so asume she is a youngster and an experienced mentor will help a lot. If you want my advice, forget talking about a "catch rate" and enjoy one rabbit at a time. Are you digging down to her too soon? I always treat ferreting like fishing....enjoy getting my equipment ready, check out the river and tides, see where the fish are feeding, prepare the land beforehand, get excited the night before the first t

You and me both Mr T. I ferret brambles and thorn hedges on my own all the time.very time consuming but I get a lot of pleasure and satisfaction for each bunny I manage to net.

I bought the paperback "out of town" a few years ago in a second hand bookshop.Very good and worth looking out for.

Well done guys.Reading about days like this is as enjoyable as the big bag days in my opinion.....because I can realte to your experience more easily!! I too have loads of hawthorn hedges as described by LLloyd and without a lurcher seem to spend too much time watching bunny skip off across the field away from me. It's great being out though.I treat ferreting like fishing....much of the enjoyment is in the preparation and hunting, not just big bags.

Yep,I can confirm the above. I bought a new mk 3 collar last week.As sometimes happens she got it stuck in the net on her way out and started to drag the net down. When I pulled at the net (a game the young ferrets seem to love) off came the collar...just in reach. I've put it on an old leather one which works a treat.

L.Lloyd, surely someone could fit one of those little pin hole cameras to a ferret collar. Why not write to David Atenborough?....you could have a part in the film. Fame at last!

Yep,one of the chalets on the cliffs overlooking the bay....bootifull!

Maltenby, yes I suppose that makes sense, the more tunnells the more chance of escape/survival. Funnily enough we had our honeymoon in Pembrookshire at Freshwater east!!

"More than once" you say Will .Been married 25 years and must be going wrong somewhere! Some honeymoon though!!!

I was out ferreting today in a very mature hedgerow. The hedge was riddled with rabbit holes joining up for yard after yard. Whilst waiting for a bolting bunny I started to wonder- why do rabbits actually keep digging more and more tunnels? And has anyone ever seen them throwing out the soil like moles do? The only rabbits I have ever seen have been either eating grass or running away!! It's not as if they are digging for food, as we all know rabbit "diggings" are not real attempts at tunnels, just eating roots etc. All those warrens joined up must be very labour intensive, but why bother

Funnily enough I was only thinkig about this today. Yesterday I stopped a private hire guy to tell him he was driving in the dark with no lights. He was foreign and half asleep. All private hires around here are from Eastern Europe. They are always parking outside school gates and driving whilst talking on their mobiles. HOWEVER......I am reliably informed that a petition is counted as a single complaint by the government rather than counting the number of signatures on it so be warned you might get ignored!

I've tried all three theories.....mated her with a hob and had a litter, jab at the vets, spayed. I'm very glad I had one of mine spayed.I would recomend this.Job done permanently!

Thanks, will watch that. Picked up a road kill bunny today but that's for the ferrets.

I've never had a problem with people who are anti hunting so i find it hard to see why some members on here compete with eachother to see who can think of the naughtiest word to describe them. "Each to his own" I say. However if I was running a hunt or shoot which was disrupted by campaigners I would probably be furious. Likewise if anyone challenges me when I'm ferreting they are told "go away".End of story! The double standards amongst some"antis"really annoys me though. I recently challenged a vegitarian friend in a debate by pointing out that the potatoes she was eating were a

I've got an old Mk1 set up and have read hundreds of threads complainng about the new models and fancy collars. Is it time ferreters approached Deben to suggest reproduction of the the Mk1? Mine works fine on the occasions I have had to use it.Simple sturdy and basic and cheaper I would have thought. Just a thought. Mooster.

A decent days ferreting is just like a decent days fishing in my book.ie outdoors in the fresh air piting my wits against nature. My best fishing trip was when i caught my first fish and my most memorable ferreting day was when my ferret bolted her first rabbit. Numbers are just a bonus.

All the publicity about rotting your liver with booze has worried me for ages so I've cut right down. So far so good and I sleep much better.

I nipped across the boder to Cornwall myself this morning for a spot of ferreting. This was against my better judgement as the weather forcast was for rain and high winds. But I was desperate to make the most of my day off! My nets were blowing in my hands by the time I started setting up.Gulls were screetching overhead in anticipation of the impending storm and even a storm cock came to sing above me in that melancholy way that they do. I fully expected a bad day and was ready to blame my impatience. Imagine my surprise when my little jill had bolted four rabbits by 11am from some of the m
