  1. You'll never forget your first trip mate, the first time you realise your ferret is working with you and for you. The first time he disappears down the hole shaking his fur with excitement. The first time he emerges and looks for you to see what you want to do next. As for his first bolted bunny.....there's nothing to compare with cooking it,eating it and letting him have his share...absolute magic! Enjoy your day out and come back for any advice if you need it. Cheers.Mooster.
  2. Lovely pics thanks Frank. What's so good about a picture of a bloke and a spade?? Nobody other than the outdoor /ferreter would ever understand would they!! By the way what's the metal shepherds hook?.. is it for pushing through to locate the warren? Regards.Mooster.
  3. I'm a Bassett as well...should have lied about the pie and chips I s'pose!

******WARNING******* Don't make the same mistake as me...Check other household members are not standing in a row behind you quietly weeping into their hankerchiefs and reaching for the telephone to call the "authorities". "Just one more try before you put the leg restraints on doctor.... please!"

    HOBS.

9 month old hob has just about dropped but until today no sign of tryinng his tackle out. fed him and his sister this morning and saw tell-tale bite mark on her back,so looks like he's booked his visit to the vet asap.
  6. Lynyrd Skynyrd. Album-one more from the road. Track-Tuesday's gone with the wind.
  7. Little and often seems to keep my hob and 2 jills alert and healthy. I agree as already said, trial and error.I always try to imagine the size of each ferrets stomach as a guide to portions...when they are full they will store for later or just retire to bed contented. If they are hungry they will race out of bed when they hear you coming.
  8. nice one mate, looks like your ferret was chomping away on that bunny when you dug down and spoiled his dinner. They just think of themselves sometimes don't they?!
  9. Stuck at home recovering from the flu.Your pics and story have cheered me up Frank!... Trouble is i can't wait to get out with the ferrets again and see the draw strings at full length like the one in the picture. Cheers.Mooster.
  10. welcome to the ferret world mate.I recon the key to enjoying ferreting is to remember that it's not an exact science and you have to accept nature is in charge of your ferrets as well as your bunnies. Enjoy your ferrets! Mooster.
  11. My first gun was a second hand 12 bore baikal which i bought for £35 , 15 years ago. i've shot hundreds of rabbits and pigeons with it as well as the usual pests including two foxes. Baikal are, i gather known for no frills styling etc.If you are looking for a reliable workhorse give it a try, mine is still giving me good returns on my £35! and i haven't yet replaced it.
  12. Might be better asking on the working dog forum. cheers.
  13. enjoyed the story mate,i suppose because i tend to think everyone else has a straightforward and easy time out with the ferrets.Very reassuring to hear someone elsev confess to th panicks!! Mooster.
  14. No can of worms from me...i couldn't agree more! Lovely picture mate,I still slow down the car everytime i pass the field where i got my first bunny and likewisev my first woodie. Also my first...............! wife thinks i'm admiring the view!
  15. welcome to the ferreting game! every trip is different ...like most field sports i s'pose. Your grandad looks a bit bored though!!!!
  16. i'm also confused as to how many you have lost mate! Contact your local animal rescue centre and police as lots of people call them when they find a stray and are usually more than willing to find the owner rather than having to house them. When i lost one of mine i put letters in my neighbours doors as on had said she would kill a ferret if she found it and didn't know the owner.
  17. i've been in the woods in devon today with my old baikal 12 bore but really only because it was too wet and windy to go ferreting. havent stalked woodies for about a year and it showed!...i was useless!! very windy so woodies had trouble seing me creeping through undergrowth but i was so rusty, everytinme i Moved from my position a bird would fly from above my head,so windy i hadn't heard them arriving. i swore at myself over and over again but had a good day in the fresh air! Definately a day to forget so far as the bag goes, but still better than being at work! just thought i'd share my e
  18. Must admit my first attempts at leaving the net on the ground seemed to spook the bunnies and was a desaster! What are these new types of nets like?where do you get them?how do they work? would be interested to know as my early attempts with the "old fashioned" one have been a bit of a failure!
  19. Same down here in Devon...a bit sporadic. However i wonder if it's because a lot of the young ones have been thinned out by natural predators by this time of year after we all get used to the hoards of youngsters running around in the summer?
  20. Enjoyed that very much mate, the music took a bit of getting used to, but after a while it seemed appropriate to a real English country scene.Well done.Mooster.
  21. I try to be arriving no later than 10.Especially with short days in winter. That way,if you do get a lie up you won't be digging and panicking in the dark which is never any fun. Some people go in the moonlight at warrens they are familiar with but you need to have a lot of confidence in your ferrets. I recently saw a piece on this site by a young lad who went after school,no problem if it's a small warren you are farmiliar with...a bit like lovin' if you get the chance...take it!

Mine love old watering cans, sections of old sheets or towels suspended from the roof of cage or on a frame to make a hammock and plastic bags ...the thick strong ones you get for carrying leaves in the garden They also love ambushing eachother from inside old metal jars, buckets or stoneware pots. Strong thick ropes for climbing ,and last but not least ,whole rabbits head or pelt hung just off the ground will provide lots of fun for them. They love anything that moves and crackles or swings around when being investigated. Hope this helps. Mooster.
  24. nice ferrets mate.......Thought this was "one for the ladies" at first.... check out those half opened flies!!!!!
  25. Enjoyed that Frank thanks. It's a pain when something like that happens,Ive recently got permission on a newfarm but the owner is a miserable old sod and keeps chickens and ducks nearby. He said he would fill me in if I ever lost a ferret and it killed any of his birds so i'm paranoid about the locator failing when i'm over there! cheers.Mooster.
