  1. "20 plus a day"!!!is that 20 bunnies or 20 digs?? I also have never had to dig more than a couple of feet in 5 years ferreting and in most cases my ferret has emerged next to my ear somewhere to see what all the noise was. We certainly all do it differently!
  2. Handle, handle, handle. With kits I always handle them religously at least twice a day for ten minutes. When you hold a kit, keep your right thumb and forefinger like a loose ring around its neck whilst gently stroking and massaging the body. That way any "nippy" ones won't be able to bite and will learn to accept the handling and enjoy your handling. Cheers, Mooster
  3. You boy scouts are getting far too technical now....stop! I've written all the info down,so thanks for the tips. Sorry Phantom but I'm the other end of the country(down at the pointy end in Devon). Get yourself a couple of ferrets from someone local maybe on this forum and you will never look back. They really are infectious and great sport. Cheers.Mooster.
  4. Well if any of you chaps ever get a ferret problem I can help with...just ask. I will try to remember to let you know how I get along with the improvements. Summer bunnies here we come! Mooster
  5. Many thanks gents. You seem to know what you are talking about so I can impress my mate when I tell him how I've sorted it! Thanks again for the figures. Mooster.
  6. I'v had this lots of times. It even happened when I had a jill spayed. When I put her back in with her mother, the mother attacked her for several weeks.I assume she did not recognise the scent after a night at the vets. As long as there is no blood shed, this is just sorting out the "pecking order".As humans it is very difficult to watch but try not to interfere with nature. This also happened to me when I introduced a new young hob-the matriarch jill attacked him and dragged him around for the first week or two. I tried separating them with a wire fence for a bit but as soon as they were pu
  7. Hi folks. I'm a long time ferreting man and 12 bore owner who acquired a weihraught HW80K .22 a couple of years ago. A mate of mine who is a real techy on air rifles took it to his club and measured it's velocity on a chronoscope and reported back that he suspected the wrong spring had been fitted or it had been illegally altered as the velocity is too high. He has let me borrow his chronoscope to sort the matter out and has explained how I can either remedy this by grinding a bit off the spring or by heating it up and decreasing the spring length slightly. I intended doing this tomorrow a
  8. Just thought I would share this to add to the list examples of what can make your ferret ill. I bought a young albino hob this year to keep my jill company after her mother died. Just before christmas,he shocked me several times with a really loud cough...it sounded just like a duck quacking. He had no visible symptoms but soon became more and more listless and stopped eating and drinking. I did the usual research on here and wondered if it might be a hairball but decided to take no chances as he was looking very ill and took him to the vet (££££££££££££££!) She reckoned hair
  9. has not set their status

  10. Try the following method which works fine and costs no extra once you have the decoys.(full body). All you need is a bundle of bamboo canes which are easily cut with a saw and grow back quickly. Most gardeners who have them are glad to have them controlled now and then. Trim the ends so that a small section of copper pipe (scrap pieces 6-8" long) can be forced over the end tightly. The wood is very hard so you need a sharp knife. All you do then is repeat this to make as many sections as you need. Take a section of coat hanger and fix to the top pole with tape or string so that it can be
  11. Crap! Oh look at the big waves."I'm in a hurricane" Now I'll puke on camera and fall over. I'm nearly as daring as Ross Kemp in Afganistam aren't I viewers? Now I'm going to paddlle onto a lovely silent lake and shout about fishing before swimming naked! Get back on top of the pops mate and leave the outdoors to Ray Mears!!!!
  12. Funny thing.I'm also planning to pick up the waders tomorrow having had the Liddl leaflet poked through my letter box. I reckon the cheap rods and reels are a bit of a false economy but the waders should last a season or 2 for bass/mackerel fishing. I got the telescopic landing net from Aldi last year and it was really good for landing wrasse and pollack off the Devon coast. Cheers Mooster.
  13. well thanks for all your replies ladies and gents and for your kind thoughts. I'm away in London this weekend for the wifes birthday.I'd forgotten how much I hate all the crowds of people up here.....I always feel like crocodile dundee on his first trip to New york!!...Everyone else seems to be walking the opposite way to me in big cities don't you find? I can't wait to get back to the relative quietness of the westcountry tomorrow and then out in the fresh air for a mooch around. Thanks again . Cheers, Mooster.
  14. I keep the nets tied up in a small hessian sack inside a normal rucksac. I pick up a length of hazel stick and thread my legged rabbits onto that which can be thrown away afterwards. I don't go in for gadgets!
  15. I was brought up in the country and loved ferreting but never had one of my own. We had to move into town when I got married 25 yrs ago as we couldnt afford to live in the country. There is a God by the way because 5 years ago a stray albino jill arrived in my back yard....we made friends and she moved in! She was the friendliest ferret I ever knew and when we finally went rabbiting together she was unbeatable. I could not believe the feeling of achievement when she bolted her first rabbit. She gave me two healthy litters as well as countless rabbits and became a real good companion
  16. I had a "middle age" check up recently and although I don't have this condition I asked the nurse why there has recently been so much publicity about thousands of people walking around feeling ok but actually having the condition. She explained that having untreated diabetes ia a big cause of heart disease and other serious life threatening illnesses. So I would say you are one of the lucky ones mate. You will have the condition under control and can rest assured that you are far less likely to suffer heart problems or similar. Still makes you annoyed though when you have looked after
  17. I get mine free from a local joiner/boat builder who is pleased to get rid of it.
  18. Did you say "baby wipes"?!!!!!!!
  19. Nice story and well done............Patience is definately the word for all ferret related training wether at home or in the field.
  20. That looks bootiful! Will be getting some pigeon out of the freezer tonight. I might dust the meat in flour first to thicken up the juice. Thanks for the pics.Mooster.
