http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/10/1019_051019_dogs_sharks.html Absolutely shocking. They should be used as bait them selves!

2 words BOLT HOLES! they can be a bugger to spot often almost covered with grass etc but have a good look around before entering a ferret as 9 times out of 10 the rabbit will bolt out of the hole you have missed! also i like to leave 15- 20 mins before entering the ferret after netting up because spooked rabbits will lie up more so it mite sound like a waste of time waiting 20 minutes to enter the ferret but it will save time having to locate the ferret and dig to it.

Mine is all gorse bushes, a nightmare to net up and retrieve caught rabbits have to rely on hearing the rabbits hit the net. One day i didn't hear a rabbit hit the net and waited half an hour for the ferret to emerge and found it devouring a rabbit which was still alive and not making a sound! Before i get hold of some more ferrets im going to go up there with some loppers and cut all the gorse round the holes back so i can get to them!

One of mine escaped from its hutch in the garage a few years ago and about a week later heard a scrabbling noise coming from the bin and it was the ferret! don't know if it had got in there strait away and eaten the scraps or had found its way back in to the garage and fallen in there? either way once it was in there it was trapped! Another time i didn't shut the shed door properly and all 8 ferrets got out and were in the gardens of 3 houses. I had to round them all up in the dark using a head lamp! Another time when i was a lot younger and didn't have a locator i lost one down a war

I live about an hour from penrith and an hour and a half from haltwhistle but i know these areas hold a lot of rabbits (unlike west cumbria)so it will be worth the travel. -

ever heard the saying practice makes perfect ? i cant imagine the dog jacking from missing a rabbit that nonsense ,get out with her more and more till you catch one atb. This is getting confusing now! i have been told by quite a few people on another forum that she could start yapping when chasing and eventually jack if she doesn't get her first catch quite quickly when started on the lamp? I personally have never had this problem but my other dogs have always caught on the first or second night on the lamp. But like i have already said the lamd i used to start my lurchers now holds no -
Thats unlucky. Sounds like you have p****d someone off?

Has anyone got any permission in the carlisle, penrith, haltwhistle are that is willing to let me tag along for some ferreting, mooching or lamping? Im just starting my 14 month old whippet but the permissions i have are either golf courses which aren't suitable for a dog just starting or land where the rabbits are few and far between and i want her to get her first catch soon before she gets bored of chasing rabbits she can't catch and jacks. Thanks Adam

Mine? We were out for about 3hrs tonight and she ran the last just as strong as the first. If your dog is fit enough she will be just as good as an equivelent lurcher imo -

This is mine she's 14 months old and i have just got back from her second lamping session. I have had no problem with training her and she has pace and good prey drive. Rubbish pictures but you get the idea. Thanks Adam -
I wouldn't ferret too close to foot paths personally because you will probably end up answering questionnes as to what you are doing or getting grief from the antis'! If you can find any i would start off with small warrens with 3-4 holes that aren't covered in branbles as these are much easier to manage on your own. Have your dogs been working for long? as a decent marking dog is invaluable when ferreting and it saves a LOT of time ferreting warrens that are empty. My other question would be have you got a locator?
-
maybe you can't get it then, i asumed you could as you can get 4,6,10,12 etc
-
Im sure this has been asked numerous times before so sorry in advance, but roughly how many 4ft nets would i be able to make from the following: 500gm 6,8,10z nylon Does it work out a lot cheaper to make your own nets?

Have got a striker myself. I have heard people say that the blitz is hard to use in high winds because of the size of it. If i was going for a new lamping package i would go for one of these http://www.arthurcarteruradshop.co.uk/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=109&cat=NEW+Lithium+Lamp+Kits The new lithium batteries are much lighter and cannot be over charged.

these dogs are a status symbol in big cities and people are crossing pits with other bull types to sidestep the dangerous dog laws. The lad obviously thinks he's a hard case by the way he was walking obviously not because he needs a dog to do the fighting for him. c**k!

good working russell's
cumbrian-whippet replied to shaunpauls7's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Shes a handy size terrier then mate, she'd get up into tight spots no bother. she's a good little worker, most of the time she doesn't need to push through gorse etc she can get in underneath it so she can get right in to the middle of the most dense cover without too many problems. -
what we do in the uk is to put the ferret in to the warren and let it force the rabbits to exit the warren and get tangled in purse nets which are placed over the holes (or bolted to waiting guns or dogs). ferets are using their natural prey drive to do this and do not need trained

cumbrian-whippet replied to shaunpauls7's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
after another measure she is a little bit over 7" she is about 9" it was hard to get her to stand still for the picture so it doesn't show the full dog and tape but if it is the general opinion that she looks bigger i will get someone to hold her with the tape while i take the pic. Does it really matter how big she is though? i was not saying 7" to deceive anyone thats how big i thought she was -

here's mine. no one is quite sure how she ended up as small as she is (7" tts) but she is a good working dog non the less. -
Peasants bred them as poaching dogs in the middle ages when it was illegal to own a pure bred sight hound as these were kept by the nobility and anyone who owned a pure bred sighthounf was automatically deemed a poacher.
