  1. My other half's dad likes his shooting and fishing so he tells her to pipe down for me. She doesn't know yet that the drive up to northumberland on saturday is to find me some more permission, not christmass shopping and lunch as i told her! oops
  2. Im going to be getting a new lurcher as soon as something suitable comes along, and my question is this: In terms of trainability, living with it, hunting ability etc. which one of these would people choose: colliexgreyhound-salukixwhippet colliexgreyhound (1st cross or 3/4 grey) colliexwhippet (1st cross or 3/4 whippet) These are the dogs i am considering and i think some collie blood is a definate in my final choice. The land i work at the moment is a mix of small flat fields, larger hilly fields, fields that could almost be described as moor land and everything between.
  3. A beddy cross of some description would be my first choice for fox. You could get a wheaton, collie, bedlington, bull, greyhound, whippet cross and keep everyone happy. May as well throw some saluki in there for luck too.
  4. I find it very usefull to do this if a rabbit is running towards a fence, start shaking the lamp when its about 3 metres away, most of the time it will run in to the fence or run along it
  5. Try the hot water bottle, clock etc. but i try and leave a blanket for the dam and pups to sleep on for a few days before i pick the pup up, the familiar smell seems to calm them down a bit i think. But as for ALL lurchers calming down soon, my first lurcher cried every night for 18 months and then started as soon as the sun started coming up. I did a lot of things wrong with this pup though because i didn't know any better. Whatever you do don't go and see it if its whining. thats what i did and paid for it!!
  6. As a pure whippet owner i would second that but personally would favour a touch of collie in there too. If the fields are small a whippet would be fine but if there are any bigger fields i would go for a slightly bigger dog with more stamina 22-24"?
  7. Mine was just advertised as working whippet pups. He took me out to see the parents working and that was enough for me. Also mine is not as bad as these two sound, she just hasn't quite got the idea that just because the rabbit isn't moving at that particular moment it won't start moving again. With the first one it was struggling to get away untill i got to her and she had it by the neck and had her front legs wrapped round it! I think if i feed her the heart kidneys etc. like john rust does she will probably start keeping hold of them so she gets some food out of it. She is progres
  8. Heart, liver, kidneys etc. They get wormed regularly
  9. I did mate, there were a few bunnies around! the rabbit net made it a lot easier. Thanks again
  10. I have just fed her the offal and let her have a good scavenge of the carcas so that should help if knows that a caught rabbit = food. should have thought of that when i was out really
  11. Thanks for the replies. Think i will feed them the offal raw and worm them regularly
  12. I took my 14 month old whippet bitch out tonight and she got her first catch! She had a couple of runs in the first field but missed them both but in the second field she managed to catch on her first run so i was over the moon with that! On her second and third runs she caught again but both times as soon as the rabbit stopped moving she let it go, the first one started walking away from her so she went and caught it again but then let it go AGAIN and it hopped in to a hole in the wall. The second one was a squatter and she took it really well while it was still squatting but again as so
  13. Is the risk of tape worms still high in the offal from a rabbit? Please pardon my ignorance! Thanks Adam
  14. My little 206 diesel is getting 57.4mpg which i like a lot! Better than my old jeep grand cherokee 3.2 td which did 16mpg, cost me £70 a week when diesel was 89.9p a litre
  15. Free bump for you. If the missus would let me this would be on its way back with me! One of the nicest looking dogs i have ever seen!
  16. just get a wax jacket. IMO you cant go far wrong with one of them

  19. He sounds like a nice chap! will avoid plenmeller then. Is it a case of pick a field and it will be bouncing with rabbits ore are there particular areas which hold the rabbits?
  20. well done mate, my bitch is just starting too. she's got a big old head on her hasnt she.
