Could there be a slight injury maybe ? -
They're not all bad had to call the vet out about 3 Sunday's ago my whippet ripped her back leg on barbed wire .The vet met me at the surgery as it was closed put the bitch straight on the table and got her cleaned and stitched and actually said I hope she stands for the stitches as it will be far cheaper for u.Then when the dog was ok she done the paper work.It wasn't even my usual vet as he was busy calving a cow.I don't have ins and this is of the topic but some vets still do put the animal first and it's not all about the coin Ps guess who's changing vets

Took my whippet bitch ferreting at about 6 months onwards just to see the craic didn't even chase bunnies to start with but loved sent if its all play and fun for a young dog I think it can be positive as long as there's no expectations .when she started to want to chase kept her back and only give her easy bunnies didnt want her chasing and not catching too many Once the bitch got to 10 or eleven months started her on lamp she was slow to start but never looked back she 2yr 8 mths now and rabbit mad laid up with barbed wire injury at min but don't hunt now anyway so not to bad

I agree with whippet I have one for rabbits only and it gets on brilliant with my two young daughters lives outside but is house trained also great wee dogs for the job -
I brought on a whippet pup she nearly 2 and half year old now. She still never seen another dog working retrieve is 100% cuz she knows no different only ever seen bunnies though. I started her ferreting at young age no chasing just watching then up around 11 or 12 months a few easy bunnies. Her strike took a while but once she mastered that she gets bunnies now every time where out. only lamp her now no ferreting all season just lamping as the gets older all clicks into place can be frustrating at times this was my first running dog also. Stopped now as its all for fun and does are full of you

Brought on a whippet bitch last couple of years was lifting rabbits ferreting and a bit of lamping same thing at about 14-15 months running bunnies but not a good catch rate stopped her seeing bunnies for about 2 or 3 weeks just walked road and feilds where there was no rabbits then took her lamping again she hasn't looked back at that age it's all training and learning a wee break can do a world of good -

Have a whippet bitch myself at thirteen months catch rate on lamp not great and would nearly wait for sqatters to get up but when ferreting lifted rabbits and held in net no problem after the summer lay of she lifted first two squatters out ov seat great feeling she catching bunnies now every night shes out and retrieving live to hand well worth the wait she 22 months now I think the word patience was said to me about 100 times . At the time I thought shed never come good stick at it

This is my 18 month old bitch she camera shy lol Coming on steadily retrieves live to hand every time but think this makes her strike suffer http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae322/sean925/f5a12929.jpg http://i984.photobucket.com/albums/ae322/sean925/2891ca81.jpg

My whippet bitch done the exact same thing I think it came from early treat training. She would drop dummy/ rabbit skin for treat at an early age on retrieve. Then when treats stop she still retrieved everytime but would drop at my feet. Then when live rabbits came into play she dropped and the first one or two took of again she soon clicked she now 16 months still retrieves lth so I was lucky enough may work for u but if the dog kills the rabbit after the strike this method obviously not gonny work

Aye think al take the air rifle and .22 blanks out bushing next week end and when she hits scent and starts hunting fire a few air pellets to start with and then move on to blanks keeping close to bitch all the time to reasure her will get my hunting partner to fire shots at a distance and build from there.
-
Think I'll try the .22 air rifle first it's spring and about 18-20 ftlbs.Maybe even a few shot and retrieved bunnies to make it interesting. I have .22 starting pistol for shooting blanks for training springers may move onto that before the 12 g just to get her use to live rounds. Not wat I got the whippet for but no point in restricting the dog to ferrets and lamp

Just wondering if any of you break your running dogs to the shotgun.I have a whippet bitch which is 16 months and as the ferreting is stopped now for a while take her bushing .when bushing all sorts of stuff pops it's head up or takes flight . So was thinking of breaking her to the gun over the summer months for something to stimulate her plus would be really handy. Was going to start with a starting pistol.Any comments or suggestions welcome.

thanks for replies not planning a mate just curious would it be possible . Sort ov split camp suppose every mates different wouldn't like to wreck the wee bitch though.

Just a question not planning on breeding at the min but as the season is drawing to an end i start to dream again.LOL.i have a whippet bitch only 16 months , 19.5" and 28lbs.This season came on well out ferreting retrieving all rabbits live to hand also a couple on the lamp.Next season i will class as her first hopefully.I have read alot on this site about whippet greys. Is it posible to cover a whippet with a greyhound or should the breeding be done in reverse as the pups maybe too big for the whippet.Again i am not planning a breeding as dog hasnt had enough seasons yet to prove herself. This
