thats the same way i view it mate thats why i steak them at the entrance and dont let them see the dig but why let the dog travel to a stop end thats already being dug? surely if he is keen to go then backfill andbringthe dog to a handy earth and let him self enter and dig the dog out. surely this is far better for the dog i dont mind giving a pup a stop end but its the last resort id much rather get them to self enter by spikeing them near entrance holes while other do works the hardest part of getting a terrier working is to get them to travel most terriers will tackle a fox but

i would nt let anybody use any of my dogs for stud. unless i knew them and they were decent lads who would nt be selling pups rather than give them to close digging freinds and getting plenty of feedback on there progresion. i would nt breed unless its to keep the line going or for an outcross which i recently did fingers crossed i got my bitch mated 4 weeks ago she is d.r bred ad i put her back to very good a.c. dog with a good history of producing workers. so fingers crossed i should have a litter of pups on the ground in a few weeks and all going well will be passed out to my digging mates

wilko tango replied to grafter-man's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
They are being peddled world wide from France, Korea, to the States. I didn't realize there was a Deadgame Patterdales in Korea until today. http://cafe.daum.net/patterdaleterrier Ha! Ha! and I guess other members here had better photos than he did so he used their pics on his site instead of his own. GD Waz what do you think of the photos of the black terrier working his euro badger? LOL Edit to add: WOndering what that the pups I got here?! & also what other name you go by G-M? LOL I go by my given name but I am not dumb enough to post it on a public forum, and I -

wilko tango replied to am back's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
buserdog i dont know the lads who posted them but am sure they were nt aimed at you. i think they wr just giving there honest opinions about breeding. after all thats te way the tread has gone. we all seen the pics you posted of your crew afew days ago and anyone here who could nt complement ya on them are either wankers or jealous cants. and for anyone else here who does nt know busters stuff well i can tell you i dug over a dog he sent to ireland on a few ocasions and i can tell yous he is a very good dog that came up trumps in some testing places. you just keep breeding the way you are and -
by all means try him again mate. but not trying to disapoint you from my own experience i think once they come away once i think they ve had enough. you might get him going again but i would nearly say he will do it again. but saying that some dogs have ther off days anyway i wish you the bes of luck with him and i hope he wprks out for ya

EASY OR A LOT OF MESSING ABOUT ?
wilko tango replied to am back's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
i personally have no problem breeding from a hard dog or bitch i think its vital to keep a certain amount of hardness in your terriers to keep the line strong. but to try and balance things out a bit i would use a good steady dog across a iron hard bitch or visa versa. but then again whats peoples toughts of a hard terrier some think its a terrier tha has a hold for most of its time to ground but migt not get banged up and theres the ones that do the same and get destroyed but will notg come away. i think the second of them is the hard one but on that subject i personally prefare a good steady -
EASY OR A LOT OF MESSING ABOUT ?
wilko tango replied to am back's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
yes get rid of it.i could put up with a dog thats too big as long as he stays digging so as to make room to push on or dug to and made space for. but i think as soon as a dog comes away from the stuff his days are numbered. if he was a dog that wrked well for me previously he would be giving another chance but always watched with a beady eye. -
yeah i see your point buster. but on the other hand theres lots of lads that travels and meet with other lads so there getting the opertunity to see different dogs working all the time. just a taught My post to be honest was a piss take BUT theres some truth in there, even if you were traveling and having the odd day with different dogs and different lads then you aren't seeing those dogs through a full season. i could take you to earths that have never seen a dog and make an average dog look great and so on, IMO you can't judge any dog by one or two days work, you'd have to see the

What makes a fell terrier
wilko tango replied to brown trout's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
i personally am not worried bout wer they came from but saying that its only right to pay respect to the men who created and kept their strains of fell terrier right only for them most of us would nt have the dogs we have today . i think its more important fr the people lucky enough today to have good working terreirs to do there best to preserve what they have cause if it gets lost its gone forever. to me the fell terrier is the best breed of all the dogs j.m.o i think there the bravest and the hardest working of all dogs and i think truelly deserves the title of workng terrier -
i have to disagree mate. and i think afer 10 handy enough digs the young terrier would be busting wit confidence. personally id prefer my own terriers 5 or 6 on first season and left off to mature for the next season. i also think quarry that was dug before and released could be a big factor in testing a young terrier. obviously you would expect your terrier to do the job but am sure theres been plenty of unfortunet young dogs that had there carreers cut short by encounters with there experienced enemies. good topic kev

sounds to me like sounder has somesort of gripe with fionn  . iv heard nothing only good thing about fionn and his dogs. lovely terriers fionn hows the pup coming on?

i think christian 71 has it on the button. as for a problem i dont think there is any with todays terriermen. i think most of the good terriermen today have learned from the older ones and they know how to keep there strains right. its very hard to get terriers from good stock these days and thats down to the lads with the good ones not selling pups but spreading them out to there mates and thats the way things should be kept. i also find it very hard to believe theres dogs about today that have smithy blood in them for the fact that smithy was born almost 40 years ago. now i know some lads li
