Best time to apply for a 243
charlie caller replied to tomdean's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Sounds like you tick all the boxes mate, get your paperwork off today -
You will find the shooting world full of snobs IE reloading snobs, scope snobs, rifle snobs, brass snobs(could not possibly use anything but lapua you know) let me tell you mate lee presses are fine,as is all lee equipment, and it has a lifetime warranty so if it breaks send it back, my advice stick to a single turret press when you are learning, and leave speed reloading to the very experienced, after all I presume you are loading for deer stalking/foxing,not shooting the taliban? so why the need for all that speed, relax sit there with a brew, take your time and reload some quality ammo, with your Le

Yep it could be badly cut threads,or a host of probs,is the barrel touching the wood with the mod fitted, are the bullets clipping the inside of the mod due to badly aligned moderator(threads)are you getting a couple of good shots and then poor grouping,(moderator comming loose)you dont mention if you took your rifle in with the mod,if it is poor threads causing an alignment issue, you should be able to see this as you look up the barrel(breach end bolt removed)and prob see copper in the mod where the bullets have clipped it,dont let your gunshop talk you into an expensive re thread job, without

Ah but were your bullets Blitzkings?? no Blitz, the Blitzkings are £18.40 The blitzkings were £25, but i can get the Blitz for £17.50 at the same place think i will change to these Cheers Ye not sure what the difference is in terms of killing, unless the blitz kings expand a little quicker,I use 80gn blitz on fox, muntjac, roe, cwd,to me they seem the perfect all round choice, expand well on fox and produce instant kills, but seem to have good penetration on small deer, without a huge amount of meat damage, gve the blitz a try bud and save some cash.

Not quite sure what you mean 4 stage press,do you mean a press that has a turret that will fit 4 dies? unless you are flaring the case neck,or crimping the bullet(a very good idea, although I havent got round to buying the Lee factory crimp die yet ) you will only be using 2 dies, one to resize the case,(full length,or neck only) and a bullet seating die, so my advice would be keep it simple, buy a press that takes one die and take your time, its not a race, and when you are learning,it is important to go through each stage and understand thoroughly why you are doing it,just my opinion mate, best o

Dedicated "FOX" Rifle....What's that all about?
charlie caller replied to Deker's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I quite agree mate, no chilling required just my interpretaion of the term, and yes I have also seen individuals that I dont think could hit an Elephant @ 100 yds with a .223 -
Dedicated "FOX" Rifle....What's that all about?
charlie caller replied to Deker's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I can sort of see where you are coming from, although I think 200 yds for a .223 is being a little unfair, I have seen foxes shot a lot further with instant kills,(prepare for flak from the .223 users)I think the term relates to quite simply,a rifle used for foxes and nothing else, perhaps with a night vision set up,or a nice light rifle that the user chooses to use for all his/her foxing forays, when carrying a bigger calibre could mean lugging a heavier beast around,I think the shooting community like to pigeon hole things sometimes,I have a .22 hornet, and a .243 both conditioned for fox, but I -
If its true, then its another nail in the coffin for British industry,so many like Norton motorcycles fallen by the wayside due to crap management, what a shame lets hope someone buys the company and resurects the name.

To silence a .25-06 or not?
charlie caller replied to Brooksey's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ok now you are making me drool,if ya need a hand let me know haha, I have a weatherby vanguard, cant fault it, accurate well made, and reasonably priced, you wont go wrong with one I promise you, they are the same as Howa 1500,mine is not ammo fussy either,so you should not have a problem with finding a round that shoots in it,and if you cant live with the black plastick stock I bought a lovely Boyds custom laminate stock from the states, about 120 quid inc postage, turned it into even more of a tack driver. -

charlie caller replied to Brooksey's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No probs mate, you wont go wrong with a 25-06 mate tremendous calibre, and as my mate who shoots Sika says it is the calibre that kills Sika just by looking at em, the Mod I recommend is the PES/MAE t12 I have one on the .243 and it is brilliant, perhaps not the cheapest, but its all stainless and wont rot out like a t8,but please mate, remove it after shooting, and give your threads and crown a good wipe with an oily rag, and now and again put a spot of grease, (lt2 or similar) on the thread, then you will have no probs, leave it on and you will be having your rifle re crowned in 12 months. -

charlie caller replied to Brooksey's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
In short mate, why would you not? unless you are stalking exclusively on the hill, then I would say its a must, (almost) it will reduce the gigantic echoing boom, to a loud crack, reduce the muzzle flash (25-06 do have a consideable one) if your lamping, tighten your groups up, and give you the opportunity of another shot sometimes, as your quarry cant detect the direction of the shot,I would not use any of my cf rifles without one now,so yes mate I would say go for it, just remember to remove it everytime you put your rifle away, or it will destroy the crown on your rifle. -
Nice one dude, first one he gets there will be no looking back, a little trick I discovered,if you have a bunny making for a hedge, say left to right for instance, lead him with the beam as if you were shooting him with a shotgun,I found my female Harris would always get in front better than if I just kept the beam on him,you might not need to but its worth a tryif you find he is a little short, not too much though, a couple of inches is enough, the bird can see the rabbit fine, best of luck mate and yes keep us posted.
-
TBH an inch group is fine for hunting, as a general rule a group will open up by an inch per hundred yards over zero range, so if shooting at a fox for instance, your kill zone is roughly 4-5 inches so out to 300 yds you should be fine with a rifle that consistently shoots inch groups,(providing all the other factors are working together).

I am afraid that is rubbish, nothing at all wrong with Lee stuff, after all would a company advertise a money back guarantee on their collet dies,if you dont load your most accurate ammo? millions of rounds loaded with lee stuff all over the world without problems, I love reloading snobs, extoling the virtues of their hundreds of poundsworth of equipment they have, just to load hunting ammo, I use a Lee hand press and in my .243 and .22 hornet I can load ammo that will shoot sub half inch groups @100yds all day long, what more could you ask for, oh and in the nineties the world 1000yd benchr

Will bell you later bud. thanks for the chat mate. just land checked it and its already cleared for .223. but firearms could not say if that was the highest cal passed off or just the cal previously applied for!! because in there wisdom they don't note that on the police system. so to find out I am forced to put in a variation and they will probably have to send out plod again if i apply for a higher cal than .233!!! as they have a new feo for that area. if plod had just stated the checking criteria it would make their life much easier and i would know what best to p
