The main difference, pal is the economy of the hornet(assuming reloading)over the .223 even at max charge the .22 hornet only uses around 12 gns of powder,as apposed to the 25 ish of the .223 obviously your .223 will give you extra range over the hornet, but it is quite capable of shooting foxes cleanly out to 200yds,and where it really shines is if you are using it on rabbits, crows ect but as said many times before the way to get the best out of the hornet is to reload it,flare the neck of the case, and crimp the round, most people who use one love em.

Rifle For Fox And Roe Recommendations Please ???
charlie caller replied to dax17's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
A .243 will do all you want mate,if you intend to reload mate,my load of 80gn Sierra blitz under 45gns of win 760/h414 (max load) is simply quite stunning on foxes, and drops roe and cwd on the spot without a lot of meat damage, and is nice and flat out to 250 yds plus, and if you do wish to use it on larger deer the Hornady 95gn sst is an awesome round(scotland must be 100gn on large deer) and my recommended rifle would be Howa/weatherby vanguard. -
Spot on mate,I started using the Sierra 45gn varminter,I found that on rabbits the round passed through, without too much damage, but on foxes it expanded nicely, dropping them on the spot, and although initialy not as fast as the 35gn vmax,it retained its energy much better at 150 yards plus,if using vmax head shots on bunnies are a must, if you want to eat them, but yes a belting little round and I totally agree reloading is essential with a hornet.

There is unfortunately a very valid reason why the BASC,whilst perhaps being sympathetic to your plight, will not get involved in challenging conditions on new applicants certificates, put in simple terms they realise that,as I have stated before within the bounderies of common sense, the police are entitled to put any additional conditions on your certificate,I know one or two people have dissputed this(and dont get me wrong here chaps I am not in any way deffending them) but if anyone cares to ring BASC firearms dept for clarification, that is exactly the response they will get! The response fro -

And as the SD guy said the extractors blew off his bolt, this is rather more than a slight problem,it is happening rather too often,I certainly would not want it happening to me,and whatever yourstance on the hmr is I sincerely hope it does not happen to you either. -

Well just had a quick look at the post by the guy who had his rifle replaced,it would appear that it did not in fact blow his barrel up,however due to a round lodged in the rifle, when he fired it,the magazine exploded and it also blew the extractors off his bolt,he was told not to use the ammunition, and he was given a new rifle by the importers, after his rifle and I quote "was in pieces",as said this combined with other posts reffering to hmr barrels having a round lodged up the spout makes(or should)concerning reading to say the least. -

You are right I was perhaps generalising a little, not having read the SD posts totally in depth (probably due to a lack of interest in .17 hmr) however notwithstanding my approach to said calibre,I do try and read posts where safety is an issue/concern,I know for definate one guy had his rifle replaced by I beleive edgar brothers after it had gone bang, and I beleive (although will need to check this) blew his barrel, and more recently people have cited a number of instances where hmr bullets have lodged in the barrel, now I dont really care if this is happening due to moisture, brass, oil,or fari -
Fek me a gadget tax I'd be fecked :laugh:Hahaha yep I think when they bring the gadget tax in you had better take up golf or knitting, and dont forget mate you have a heavy barrel on your rifle, another one for the excess baggage book

You may not face criminal charges for it,but if you read your certificate,it clearly states,it is an OFFENCE not to comply with any conditions set out by the chief officer of police, and as regards ammo mate, when you go and buy your bullets just ask the rfd to put them down on your ticket, thats what I do anyway, even though in some areas ie Derbyshire they dont put them on your ticket, but travel to west yorkshire and try buying bullets there without having them on your ticket -

Have a look perhaps on the Stalking directory, and read various horror stories about people having hmr bullets lodge in the barrel, one guy actually blowing his rifle up,and this problem seems to be growing. -
OR perhaps a mileage charge, travelling to and from the stalking ground,or maybe excess bagage charge like on a plane? you would be screwed mate with the stuff you carry round
-
You have it about right there mate, and with the rise in popularity of stalking,it is probably not going to improve over night, but take heart there are still some decent lads out there, among with the rip off merchants.
-
We have non of the outlay you mention in fox outing, others may perhaps ? We can assist with the lamp or calling. Really,so do you not have to travel to and from foxing ground, does the vehicle only use fuel if you are going stalking, perhaps you are driving round your extensive permissions foxing, extra fuel, and wear and tear on the vehicle, maybe you wanted to go out for a pint that night, but work is work eh?so I dont see how so much expense is incurred taking a man out stalking as apposed to a nights foxing, surely you are not feeding the deer so much that feed costs are taking a heavy toll o
-
But surely Ray,the edible nature of deer compared to fox is not the issue?after all is not a similar outlay in time, fuel, vehicle wear and tear, and taking up personal time involved taking a man foxing,as apposed to stalking,ok we are not shooting deer at night, but other than timings what is the real difference?I would say very little to be honest, they both involve a similar amount of time/effort,and financial input,so why not charge him to have a shot at the fox?not an unreasonable question I think, just to make things crystal clear I am talking about a shot fee,as apposed to a carcass fee, which
-
Yes Ray I understand where you are comming from I am not advocating a free for all, and I have never once suggested that charging a stalking fee/carcass fee was wrong,so let me ask you, lets say a novice with his first cf rifle pays you to take him out foxing for the evening,do you charge him for the shot then,if he has one?if not why not?is it your altruistic nature kicking in or is it that you know even the biggest mug on the planet could not be conned into paying for pulling his trigger on the humble fox,but do enlighten us mate,I look forward to your reply?

Listen mate I think it stinks dont get me wrong, but home office guidelines are just that guidelines, they are not the LAW,so I am afraid within reason the police CAN put down any additional conditions they like, and the op was mentioning having been told that breaching his conditions is not breaking the law,OH yes it is,it is an offence to breach any conditions set out by the chief officer of police,so I was merely trying to steer him away from any misguided and quite frankly stupid advice he has been given to the contrary. -
.17 Best Make Model And Variant?
charlie caller replied to themightybuck's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
My point is quite simple, the guy already has a .222 so why bother with a .17hmr,.22hornet .17 hornet ect,if he is prepared to reload,as the .222 will be quite economical to run,and will do a better job either in or out of the wind than all of the above, and tbh I dont need to ask anyone about the hmr, as my pal has one and I have used it and seen it in use,and yes it is an accurate little round, but having tested it against my .22hornet@140 ish yards in a mild cross wind I can tell you which I would rather use, lets not forget the op was talking about buying a new rifle,to shoot vermin outside hi -
So essentialy what you are saying then Ray,is that if you dont pay a fee + shot fee then the ground will be barren and the stalking no good then?or at the very least a good chance of it?what utter rubbish, from a personal standpoint it does not affect me as I am lucky enough to have my own FREE stalking, for several different species, and only buy a day if I want to shoot a species not present on my ground ect, maybe I have been extreemly lucky but every day I have booked in the past, have always been good days,I am not saying I got a deer everytime, but pretty much so,and guess what,I never paid t

.17 Best Make Model And Variant?
charlie caller replied to themightybuck's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ahh yes, but the idea of him getting an hmr IS TO SHOOT AT LONGER DISTANCE,is it not?so yes ok at a .22 rf range of say 60-70 yds the hmr will be less affected by wind as it is not in the air as long as the pedestrian .22 bullet, agreed, but I dont think it is a fair comparison,as the distance increases IE 100yds plus the hmr is affected more and more, lets compare it to a .22 hornet shall we firing a 35gn vmax @3100fps,as apose to a 17gn bullet at around 2500fps,now which do you think will buck the wind better or to up the anti even more lets think about his .222 firing a 50gn bullet@ 3200fps -
.22 wmr all the way mate,30 gn vmax, better in the wind, more energy, nearly as flat out to 120 yds and out further the bigger bullet retains lots more energy than that tiny little .17 pill,oh and of course you can have a semi auto as well

Mentoring Condition - West Mercia
charlie caller replied to Dagben77's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No there isnt, however the police are perfectly entitled to put whatever condition they like on your certificate, and yes it is fecking annoying,BUT demanding, breaching conditions ect is not the way forward,a polite assertive manner will get you a lot further, keep shooting your rifles, keep putting ammo through them and keep asking, presumably you have a mentor who has already signed you off as competent,so do your 12 months and get another letter from him/her stating that in there opinion you are now ready for an open certificate, ask for that, stating that you have satisfied their 12 month probat -
A very comprehensive reply Ray and I could not agree more with your sentiments about wiping things out,yes everything has to be managed, and I also agree about the wounding bit as well,HOWEVER charging a chap 40 quid to pull his trigger is not going to improve his bullet placement/shooting skills is it?practice on the range, foxing, shooting rabbits with a .22 ect,and going out with a decent stalker prepared to show our tyro hunter the ropes, all creates a decent grounding, into deer stalking, and if part of that process is going on paid stalks then so be it,yes a stalking fee,yes a fee for the ven

Yes but not in quite the spectacular way the little hmr .17 pill is,but yes I agree reload the .222 and to a large extent forget the wind.
