Ok I take your point, I have no experience of owls (except a tawny owl as a teenager) but with the correct training, I am sure the trade off can be done, I know what I would rather be faced with a reluctant owl or a reluctant Redtail , and it would not be the Red the way to get any hawk and I would think owls too motivated is single kills and large rewards, but the bird MUST finish its ration on the glove, even if it has a full crop, when you say pick the bird and quarry up to let it crop up later, then the trade off must be done and done properly, robbing any bird is going to either hurt or

No what I am saying is that @ 300 yards if you shoot the bunny in the arse with your .17 anything it will run off wounded,of course the round has the energy to despatch it if it hits the right spot, but I just don't think advocating ultra long range shots on live quarry with a rf is a good thing, there is just too much chance of wounding.
-
Well all I can say is that shootin rabbits @ 300 yards with any rf is not on, I don't care how good it is, are you seriously telling me that this nail gun is going to be accurate enough @ 300 yards to guarantee a head shot? I don't think so, lets have a bit of respect for the quarry eh! if you really want to shoot rabbits at 300,400 500,600, yards buy a .243 or a .25-06.

Wanted Permission For Shooting Small Vermin In The West Sussex Area
charlie caller replied to sje0690's topic in Rabbit Shooting
Brilliant, another advert that should be in farmers weekly -
Well mate you state that you would not pick up any quarry the bird catches,"just let them eat it" so what if your bird catches a rabbit or hare, you are going to be sat there for a long time waiting for your bird to crop up, and even when it has filled its crop it must finish its last morsel on the glove,or you could end up with a very resentful dangerous bird, and if you do that with a female harris or a redtail, you had better learn to stitch wounds mate,I think you have got your wires a bit crossed with falconry and you are not sure what you want, except that you obviously like the idea of h

Wanted Wanted Air Rifle Permission Dorset
charlie caller replied to dorsetchap.22's topic in Rabbit Shooting
That's exactly what I meant mate, we would all like shooting on our doorstep, but I am afraid the world is not like that, have you thought of offering something in return? like money, help round the farm, mechanical work ect ect? Try it mate it works wonders sometimes, you must get out there and keep trying, you don't get out for nowt as we say in Yorkshire lad. Good luck. -

Yes loads available, just feel free to wander where you want, tell em Charlie sent you, if you need a letter no problem -
Here we go I wondered how long it would be before somebody set us off lol, (usually me) but yes to add to that I can smell the marsh already
-
What annoys me is when you shoot a bunny in the head and although stone dead it manages to kick itself down a hole,so much so that if a bunny is close to a hole I no longer shoot it preffering to wait for it to come out a bit further, interestingly never experienced this behaviour with neck shots, and take them on bunnys now most of the time.

Wanted Wanted Air Rifle Permission Dorset
charlie caller replied to dorsetchap.22's topic in Rabbit Shooting
As with a lot of places mate, the answer is to keep at it and perhaps think of broadening your horizons, keep at it bud you will find something. -
Perhaps the fact that you say HAD one speaks volumes no I don't have a great love for the hmr, I accept that it is an accurate round, and perhaps yes it does have a place, you were obviously lucky to have avoided any of the issues regarding split cases, bullets lodging in barrels and blowing the extractor off the bolt ect, an internet search will yield plenty of materiel regarding these issues, but it is loud, affected terribly by the wind and is not really a suitable fox round despite what some may lead us to believe, you say why bother to reload for the .17 I assume you mean the .17 cent
-
Well all forces see things differently, my force South Yorks will not allow any rimfire for foxes, whereas next door Derbyshire will allow .22lr for fox,I don't doubt given the ballistics that it will despatch foxes cleanly your 25 grain pillis producing 375 ftlbs at the muzzle I can load a 45 grain Hornet bullet to do 2975 fps = 884 ftlbs energy at the muzzle, so ok we are talking reloading here, but it does not even make half the energy of that loading,so yes if you compare it to some plodding along factory load the ballistics are similar, but not even close with good reloads, which is the be

Wanted Wanted Air Rifle Permission Dorset
charlie caller replied to dorsetchap.22's topic in Rabbit Shooting
Take one set of knuckles and rap on farm door until opened, then politely ask for permission, whilst clutching insurance, when refused be polite thank farmer for his time, repeat exercise until a positive response is achieved. -
Gotcha ok well best of luck finding something mate, wont hurt to mention your military when you go door knocking
-
Impossible haha nothing's impossible if you av the right tools Ye a .243 and 100 grain prohunters at 3000fps
-
If I can make it myself I will, even made a tailmount the other day with a cut down .17hmr case riveted to the mount for the transmitter to go into, rather pleased with it, have not had a go at hoods or gloves yet but pretty much everything else I will make sod buying it if you can make it for a fraction of the cost.
-
Yes I accept that the hmr will kill foxes at a sensible range, as will a .22lr, but the problem starts when the man with his hmr thinks he has a .22-250 in his hands instead of a glorified popgun and starts shooting at foxes 250 yards away with it, result = wounded fox, and CZ have started making the .17 hornet in 527 guise not sure when it will grace our shores though.

I have no experience of Armsan but I can tell you, DONOT BUY A HATSTAND they are a pile of junk, despite what some say about them they jam and don't cycle properly all the time, all I can say is if you can try before you buy all the better, I too am a left hooker mate, my advice is to save up and buy a used Benelli m1 or similar, you will not regret that, I have had mine from brand new and can honestly say it is the most reliable gun I have ever owned it has never jammed ONCE.
-
Well it remains to be seen if it suffers case issues, but I am willing to have a few quid on the fact that it will, as for ease of getting one on your ticket, well if you have land passed for the calibre you are applying for,and can show good reason then getting a cf is no more difficult than a rf,plus I bet that lots of licensing authorities, mine included will not allow it for fox,so if you are in one of those areas, what is the point of it? Another next to useless loud crow and bunny gun, and as for reloading, I accept that there are people who do not wish to reload(although secondhand gear

Just a word of warning on this, the BASC generally won't help with any issue that started BEFORE the membership did. Don't know about SACS but I imagine thats the same. That said, SACS is well worth joining if you get this sorted. Just wondering, have the police ever had a call out to a domestic between you and your ex even if no-one was charged? Now that Is just what I was thinking, I would imagine (assuming you are not withholding something from us) that the police feel that if you had access to firearms you may be a danger to your ex, that is really all it can be, unless as I s

I quite agree,Hornady have probably recognised the fact that this nail gun cartridge is just another trendy cartridge like the shite .17hmr, designed to relieve the "must have the latest thing"shooters of some cash,it will be all the rage for 5 minutes when it comes out, and we will see the endless stream of posts like (what scope for my new nail gun) (rabbit shot at 3 miles with nail gun) crap that we see for the hmr all the time, then the inevitable, wsm burst case, case stuck, my nail gun blew up ect ect, if you must have a .17 get a proper one a centerfire that you can reload and wont be s
