If your going to play with fire be prepared to get burnt. More of a quote (Churchill) than a truism but I bloody love it.! I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.

Well glad to say their still living Doing good, growing slow but getting there. They have started getting tail feathers now, still no idea about sex. Starting to wonder abit, 4 have rather long tail feathers 2 teeny bit shorter Any tips on the sexing more than appreciated! I'll get pictures tomorrow for an update after pig buyer leaves

Oh Lordy, you just had o walshie didn't you I've little fears but by god a spider will have me running. Since pigs went outside the pig shed is FULL of the big wolf ones. If one hitches a ride in my hair and ends up indoors that'll be me flopping about like an epileptic trout!

They are something different rabid. We were looking to get rarer/purer breeds for next year. Hoping to get a incubator hatch form these chicks eggs next year. There is a lot of non pure out there I've seen a few being sold. They're very similar to the Sumatra so if the breed is crossed its so hard to tell for sure. These chicks have teeny wee bits of white on their down but that'll disappear, it's normal in small amounts. Ayam cemani are one of the worst breeds for not going broody, so incubator is a must! Or a good broody hen, these were hatched under a gold top bantam.

We'll if I've one spare your welcome. There's a person on donedeal selling growers in Kilkenny. Rather they have them right now I'm unsure worth a look - do a search on donedeal you'll see the ad. Ayam cemani is listed near the bottom. Think there's is quite cheap as we'll €20 it states. May be more closer less travelling

What types do you have at present? Save any of us suggesting birds you already have Just this week added ayam cemani to my lot. But it's still undecided if I'm totally nuts or not

Ta navek. All chicks and broody doing great, she's starting to round a lot more. What I do with new animals/birds whatever, is go and sit quiet with them everyday at some point. They soon get to know your not going to throw them straight in the oven I'll get better individual pictures as soon as I can for a gander

She finished the nest yesterday. So got one baby. ONE Ah but that's how it goes, broody done great in hedge during days of bad weather the lot. Checked remaining eggs, 4 rotten (explosion type) and two fully formed but un pipped ducklings remain in shell. Happy enough knowing she's a good broody for the future along with her black/white sibling who hatched the 3 out last month. Good job ladies

Cheers cm Lurchers you should put a wee thread with few pictures up on the missus call ducks. I'm yet to see a thread on them yet. Cute wee buggers, lovely shape to them

Thanks folks. ChickenMan - been reading up on the breed a lot this past few months, here and there. Trying to educate myself on them cause I'm going in blind with these lot, keeping them healthy and very much alive is my main aim Navek - yes their meat looks horrid lol way back when you got the odd one that layed a black shelled egg, thank got it never stuck cause that's borderline rank too They really are a lot smaller than I expected even the grown pair I saw when getting these were a shock. They have the wee sea bright type heads on them, very lean. But I'd like these to be

nah don't fancy it either walshie And at the price of them, it would be one expensive bloody roast dinner

As a follow up from my last broody duck the black/white magpie who hatched out 3 ducklings. The other broody, pure white broody magpie I found in a hedge is at present a new mama duck to one duckling so far. It's been around 48 hrs from the lone duckling has hatched, and I'm praying some more hatch. You never know! But where she is is not a great location, it was great until the little fluff ball hatched and now it's like a dumping site, flies the lot everywhere! So today I needed to make sure she's sitting on viable eggs to decide if I should leave her in there a while longer or move

Terrible pictures lol. Mother hen stressed out still so took from afar so I didn't stress her. With chicks it's important to look in their mouth to check blackness. Some chicks can hatch out with a little light grey or white on their down. Totally disappears (if 100% pure) when they fully feather. They can also have slight discolouring on their feet (always check underneath) same as feathers will disappear. As long as their skin is black and 98% of them is black then I've no issues knowing if they are purebred. But be careful there's a lot of non pure ayam cemani out there. I was lucky

We get what we need when we need it from local shop, for that day. To be honest though it works out twice as expensive as it would if we went and actually done a shop in a supermarket. But never no waste here with the animals, whatever it is between the stock here it gets ate.

Well it was no time like the present, took the plunge! Ayam cemani originate from Indonesia, they were thought to be a mythical bird, people believed they would bring good fortune (let's hope!). A lot of these we're wiped out by the avian epidemic. Nowadays they are few and far between in most places, especially for the pure breed. They are completely black in colour, feathers, skin, meat, bones and even internal organs are black. I can say their blood is not black it is a deep red. As layers they are not great, lay around 60- eggs - you'd expect black eggs right? Nope they lay cream
