  1. I have used a .177 Weirauch springer air rifle with Bisley Vermin hollow point pellets a few times. Single shot to top of the head works every time and is more or less silent.
  2. Then one of the HPR breeds would be ideal. There are several to choose from, none of which are especially easy to train but all are well worth the effort. I'm a Weimaraner fan myself but also like the Spinone and German Wirehaired Pointer.
  3. As already said - any steel proofed 3" semi auto, preferably with a synthetic stock IMO. Loads out there to choose from, new and used, depending on your budget.
  4. Hi, I have the CZ452 16" Varmint in .22LR with SAK mod, Brookes trigger kit and 3-9x50 scope. Absolutely no problems with accuracy or noise. I walk quite a bit with mine and don't find the weight to be an issue, although I do use a sling if going very far. I tend to use Eley HP subs or CCI Velocitors depending on the situation. Highly recommended for rabbits. I understand that ammo for the .17 is considerably more expensive than .22, but no doubt someone will correct me on that if I am wrong. Only down side I can think of is that it refuses to eject an unused round occasionally. Ap
  5. I have a 3-9x50 Hawke, but rarely use it on anything other than 6. If I was buying now I would probably go fixed.
  6. If you do clean and oil, make sure you put a patch through the barrel to remove any excess oil before you take it out. Also make sure there are no 'spots' of oil on the face of the bolt - that will affect accuracy.
  7. My first was a Lanber 12g Sporter. Perfectly adequate as a first gun and you should be able to find one new in or around your budget. Kept mine for 2 years then traded it in on a Beretta and got back the same money I had paid for it.
  8. Hi Dunc. Never had a GWP, I'm a Weimaraner fan, but pretty much all of that type (HPRs) are quite hard to train but well worth the effort IMO. Good rough shooters dog as they don't like sitting around - like to be on the go but don't wander too far ahead.
  9. I had a Weimar up until two years ago (she was 12 when we lost her). Very similar animal in all ways (not just looks), and as Swampy said hard work but well worth the effort. All of the HPRs are very intelligent and need stimulation and/or exercise or they can become destructive if left. We never had any problems in that area as she was exercised off lead for two hours every day. We had to be able to leave her for up to 3 hours a day as my wife works part-time, so we trained her to it from a puppy. You know the sort of thing, leave her for ten minutes the first day, then 15 etc and build it u
  10. I go for pigeons all year round - land owner likes it that way so if I don't show up regularly, someone else will.
  11. Yet another newb here. Live in Devon and have been involved in shooting for about 20yrs. Hold FAC and SGC and do a bit of part-time keepering on a couple of local farms. Hi to all , and I'm looking forward to picking up a few pointers along the way. Regards Steve
  12. I have a 6v Deben Tracer Atom on my .22 rimfire. It does the job ok but the battery doesn't last very long - in reality around 30 to 40 mins of light time. Can't fault it out to 70ish yards.
  13. This thread is very interesting, and shows up some inconsistencies with FLOs from differing forces. When I applied for my first FAC, my FLO stated that under no circumstances would our Constabulary approve any rimfire for fox control. Minimum they would approve was 22-250 at that time, although some things may have changed since then. As has already been said, land acreage is less important than topography and location - FLO offered to approve any calibre I wanted on the 50 acres I had at that time, and tried to persuade me that I probably needed at least a .270 because of the likelyhood of w
  14. No pics at the mo, but Edit: Pic added Webley & Scott Tempest in .22 (Very useful around the Mink traps and Larsens) Weihrauch HW85K springer in .177 with moderator and Bushman 6x40 scope. CZ452 Varmint 16" barrel in .22LR with Brookes trigger, SAK mod, Hawke 3-9x50, Deben Tracer Atom, cheap bipod. Usually use Eley Subs or CCI Velocitors. Beretta 686 Onyx 12g Currently in the market for a 12g semi-auto for pigeons - possibly FAC simply because it will keep the land owner happy!
  15. Newb to the forum here. I have the Tracer Atom on a CZ452 Varmint in .22LR. It's only 6v but is fine out to 70yds or so, and the battery pack hangs on your belt so is comfortable to carry. For lone rabbiting I find it ideal.
