  3. david bowies new record is murder.
  4. when I was a kid in the 50s I lived for long periods on the estate where my grandparents lived/worked , it was a sporting estate in every sense ,shooting ,hunting, and coursing and the boss even had race horses. In those days if you lived at a place like this you were like a member of a big family, we used to have xmas parties, bonfire night parties, in fact anything for a piss up , one year the gaffer had a hoss running at Epsom and he sent us all down in a coach for a day out ,his hoss romped home and he must have given the bookies a tanning because he took us all for dinner in a
  5. the time the traps are left out is important, most cage trappers do not expect a catch for few days .then they will come in at a trickle, bait is important and carrot is a favourite but apple or other roots are good too, the lads I know are based in south Lincs and set their about ten yards out and ten yards apart, also they set them in a D shape on some hilly ground with the I of the D being the woodside or headland. these boys set a lot of traps and theft is a problem even when they live local and check 2/3 times a day . Look at nods posts on here ,he does a bit and has a fair bit of succes
  6. that's a silly bet to make, the cage trap would not be my own choice of controlling rabbits but I know a couple of lads who put a lot of time into them,i know one field where they caught over a hundred in two days , try and match that with your pop gun
  7. I have worn kneepads all my working life and I am glad I did because knee trouble will creep up and bite your arse when you hit 50, the best ones are the sort coal miners used to wear, they were made from car tyres with leather straps and metal buckles ,these were made by men who had worked on their knees for years and knew what was required ,they are heavy and bulky but you soon get used to them , they will support your weight ,keep your knees dry and will not be constantly slipping down like modern ones , cheapest of the lot and they last for years.
  8. I used to go ferreting in the 50s with both my granddads ,their ferrets were always in good condition and wellcared for,i knew a few people who kept them aswell, they too looked after them, you are talking bollocks mate
  9. whats it got to do with you?keep your nose out
  10. A fantastic day out for dogs and men but what about those ferrets ? what a shift they put in ,well done them stinkers.
  11. , I have a lot of land in that area and have been going on it for over 50 years, the only bother I ever had there was when the present farmers granddad filled me in when I was about 16
  12. the last days ferreting for me yesterday, it started slow bolting just one then having a bad dig through roots where we got the ferret but left the rabbit, we then done a nice set further on and promptly lost three, we then done four sets on the side of the road and had another seventeen with just a couple of shallow digs, I gutted those few and hung them in one of the farm sheds out of the sun and drove to the next village and set of again, the rabbits were bolting well here and we soon knocked a few over without to much fuss, I will potter about with traps and snares for a week or two but t
  13. back in the 50s being bullied was part of growing up ,first you were bullied then a year later it was your turn ,law of the jungle ,only the strong survive and all that ,loved it
  14. What would you use Logan ? I think you could catch fox cubs easy enough in the right sized body grip badgers too, but all you are left with after that is locking snares or a killing pole. I agree with you though ,any animal that is being caught to be killed,is better off ,being killed when its caught.
  15. looking at this I doubt you could read a book,
  16. looks a great spot , would liked to have had a look around there in the early 50s, mind you , in them sort of places, the easiest things to catch in those days was a punch on the chin and summons,
  17. they went to a posh butchers for fifty bob apiece, I rang round a few butchers last night their stories were all the same nobody can get hold of any rabbits and the few that reach Melton make £7 a couple in the fur , that was Gamble & Hollis of Syston about 5 minutes after he offered me three quid a couple, cannot see it myself but I will put a few in on tuesday
  18. we went to a place yesterday that holds a lot of rabbits , its a long bank at the side of a canal, the only way to do it is with long nets field side and hope the rabbits make for the hedge facing it . All went well for the first 15 then we had a shallow dig, the bank runs for half a mile and theres a lot of rabbits here but the towpath gets busy with walkers and their dogs so we moved over to the hedge facing and set up again, I left at 23 but my lad carried on doing a few small sets for 14 more , this with the few that I had caught in the snares gave us a good tally for the back end of th
  19. there is no point in setting higher ,the rabbits ears will be touching the bottom wire on the existing fence as it comes under and there is plenty of space below the bottom of the loop for the rabbits feet , my only problem at this place are badgers ,foxs , and buzzards and the long walk back with the catch.
  20. there are two sets of wire there, chicken , and rabbit . I try to fix to both but more often than not the clip will fit on to several strands of the fence that the rabbits have compressed by pushing under. I have caught a lot of rabbits along this fence over the years and lost a few to the foxs and badgers but I have never lost a snare that has been attached to the fence by this method.
  21. this is how I do it mate, perhaps not the best way , but it suits me
  22. didn't go mate went ferreting instead , chopped all my rabbits into a butcher at a deuce apiece not the best price but all my clients are loaded up with rabbits now and I am sick of skinning them, many about Grantham way?
  23. me and my eldest lad were out yesterday ,we were going on a farm that holds a lot of rabbits but they are in areas that are hard to ferret , snaring and rifle shooting is the best methods here and over the years ive had a lot here doing just that . Yesterday when i pulled up in the crew yard some old fellow was tapping his window to get my attention, when i went over he asked if i wanted a few nets he no longer used, there was over 35 hemp and a dozen nylon purse nets ,a hemp stop net and three ferret collars ,all of it looked unused all he wanted was a couple of rabbits if we could spare th
