  1. Mine, jrtxwhippet 21" tts

nice dog tyla victory.gif ...dose he bush tyla???..do he ever yap tyla due to the terrier in him???

He bushes, ferrets and lamps well enough for me and hes never opened up on quarry. He is, however, very vocal when hes excited or anxious. Its usually in the van on the way to hunting or when hes bored, it can be annoying but there are worse faults thumbs.gif

its good to hear that he is doing you proud tyla thumbs.gif ...hes a tidy little dog!!!

  2. hiya craigheff shes never been ferreting and have to much of a nose to be the ultimate lamper.............but!

working on the hills like i do shes the one........there is nowhere she cant get and bags of staminar............when shes on she will not give up...to the point that you can be there a couple of hour.........but she will get it.

does have a tendency to open up now and then but on the whole quite for the breeding .........will go off track a lot............and im quite used to watching her a good way off..........personaly i couldnt live without this dog at the moment......and would have another at the drop of a hat..........all in all good fun

We all have different ways of starting them off mate, I'm not a big lover of running them with other dogs until they have learnt to hunt scents for themselves, I think some dogs become lazy and can let the more experienced dogs do the graft.

I like to take them ferreting when mature mentally and physically to cope, once they are marking, holding rabbits in the net and chasing bolters and of course retrieving, some dogs are jealous retrievers so another reason to start alone, take them some where there are rabbits sitting out, let them hunt them up, even going into cover, the earlier experience of catching will spur them on, once they have hunted and caught they should be keen.

Do this a few times until going well, then I let them work with the other dogs.

Just my own way doing things, not the definitive way but it works for me so I stick to it.Cheers WR.

  6. any of you guys had small dogs that made the grade for hunting rabbit???..by small i mean around the 20" mark or even smaller, any one had a lurcher around 18" that made good rabbiting dogs???...the reason i am asking is that my dog is going to be quite small and i am just wondering what small dogs are like on rabbits???..my dog is 5 months and around 17" so you think he will make a decent rabbiting dog if entered properly???

let me know if you had a small lurcher...how small?..wat was the breed?

what do you think of small lurchers around 20"?

thanks for reading and hopefully you could give me some advice as it is my first lurcher and need all the advice i can get thumbs.gif

  8. Good post Mr Jones and an interesting thread. My Whippet's just over 4 months and is 18" TTS, he's grown an inch since last month but I hadn't bothered measuring him before that.

Does anyone know how if exercise affects a dog's growth much? I keep getting told different things like he shouldn't run too far as it'll stunt his growth and other people say the opposite, that he needs a good run to keep his bones strong and healthy.

would like to see a pic of your pup thumbs.gif what height were the parents???....not sure about exercise hopefully somebody on here will know...

Here's some recent ones from a few days back mate. His dad was 22" TTS, not certain on the mum but I think she was around 18" TTS. A few mates that have seen him reckon that he'll be a tall lad but I have no idea how he'll turn out.

bout right then 19/21 should be alright on bunnies make shape on fox depending what parents were like

parents were never tried on fox..both parents were working well on bunnies thumbs.gif
