  1. Great write up and photos. It's like a scene from the "Darling Buds of May" All you were short was Zeta Jones arriving with some beers and lunch!!. ATB
  2. Jill Mason's new Fell hunting book should be available at one of the next big working terrier shows. Great to read of the men who went before us.
  3. Pre-ban in Ireland when there were two types of terriers "Sounders" and "Strong dogs" it seemed easier to pick up a sounder for the job required. Everyone knew what a "sounders" job was. Find,Bay and Stay. A small Russell would do the job well. After breaking through the sounder was lifted. The strong dog (Staff or Wheaten) came forward to do his job. It seems less clear from some posts what some people want a "sounder" to do. If I am reading it correctly there are guys who are trying to get an all in one dog. If they could breed a 20lb Wheaten or a 20lb Staff they would have the best

  6. Really tidy set-up. the floor of the garage looks to be sealed. Is that painted on? Quality finish.
  7. IMO, The point is you let them go, so you will have plenty of digging.
  8. Flush to mains is working fine for me. Never had a problem. Flush gathers rain water from the roof, and when it fills to a certain level, it tips out and flushes the yard. After it empties it tips back and fills again. The yard is sloped away from the house and the gate. When there is no rain for 24 hours, it fills from the mains water on a timer. (it rains at least once a day 90% of the time here). Add disinfectant to the flush twice a week. ATB Is that manufactured or did you make that set ? up either way ingenious, seen your yard on another post ,never even noticed it.

  10. Fine looking kennels. Whats in the white barrels under the benches? Water? ATB
  11. Well written post. I have always admired the Staffords'. But I would think that "J. Wentworth Day's" words that there being less than 50 REAL Staffs' in the country, are as valid today as they were in 1935. (And less than 25 lb with no pedigree,) The question you asked "Why exactly do I need a good Stafford" does hit the nail on the head. They were bred and tested as fighting dogs. Early Staff - 1910 The attributes they needed to become top class at this task, is what made them such a fantastic animal. They also were used and tested as strong dogs in the days of Badger dig
  12. Good advice, Keeping a dog with that temperament is a waste of time. If the dog can not be trusted in the field with other dogs or stock, it is a liability. Too many dogs are being kept in City kennels that would not survive kenneled with a pack of hounds. IMO The old hunt terrier temperament is being lost with the breeding of this type. I think it is a fault that usually came from the Bullx being brought in. Fantastically game dogs but sometimes no control The dog gets tunnel vision, it wants to kill everything in sight. It is not prey drive. It is not hunting anything. You will have t
  13. I did not make them, a local guy did.
  14. A local guy made the 2 piece kit, I told him what I generally had in mind and let him to work the rest out. There will be a similar bloke in every area, just ask around and you will find him. The T-bar is 16mm 304 stainless round bar. I have never seen a 2 piece t-bar but would be interested if someone could do it.
  15. (Follow up post) The mattock is cut down and welded to a scaffolding bar head for weight. A Stainless handle fits inside to give it the correct balance. The Bulldog Shovel handle is also split in the centre. The taper of the handle is a tight fit in the collar. Both joints are clamped with a square cup head bolt. Thats why the hole is square, it stops the bolt head from turning. An acorn nut protects the threads when digging. The tie-out bar has a quick clip attached to a bar with a screw type washer at the bottom. This is virtually impossible to pull out once it has b
  16. These are some tools I will use this season. This is what they look like assembled. These are the same tools broken down for carrying. This is what they look like when I am carrying them. Weight of the pack is less than 7kg (15lb) The T Bar is 1.2m long (48inches) Following post shows other details. (Maximum size of pics reached in this post) ATB
  17. You make it sound easy! I was getting hungry just reading that. I am lucky enough to have a mother in law that is a great cook. Every week she makes an Irish stew, there is a surplus bowl left and I pour this onto the dogs meal.(including the spuds) You should see the dogs lap it up. Everyone to their own method. As long as your dogs are healthy and working to your satisfaction, you can't being doing anything too wrong. I like the idea of "everything in moderation" ATB P3D
  18. The dry food I use is "Bestformydog, premium agility" and like I said in my post I will mix and match. Raw fresh meat if I can get it. Your post did not offend me, I did not think Sadie or your post was directed at me. I thought both your posts were directed at the guy who started the thread? I came onto this topic from the Terrier forum. It has been moved to the health forum now. I have read through another thread here, to get a feel for what the debate on BARF was like in this forum. The way that the thread on BARF seem to collapse into personal attacks is scary. i.e. "half a page
  19. As i said on my post; "If you can source any Free meat, take it." I think that the discussion of the "relative benefits" between BARF and dry food is necessary. But in my opinion the claims that one is better than the other will go on and on. As long as people have opinions we will argue over something. The standard answer comparing dry food to fast food is not really going to help this discussion. (I know BOLIO1 you did not say this) Compare the ingredients of one relative to the other and we have a start. My thoughts on this are not limited to the ingredients alone. I think that e
  20. Good photos Jigsaw, Like the look of that dog that went to Britain. Pity that litter did not happen. ATB
  21. I have not tried this and probably would not. IMO most of these diets are a money spinning racket for the suppliers. I read the sales pitch on the website and believe they are stretching the truth a bit. I think if you take a sensible approach to feeding your dog, you have to think of the whole package. Exercise them well, keep the amount of food to suit the activity and size of the dog. Select a reasonably priced dry dog food, (forget the "Royal Canin" and "Hill science" scams) Mix in any lean scraps from the family table. If you can source any Free meat, take it. I mix in Sardines,
  22. I have used "Thompsons" drive seal, it is water-based and can be painted onto concrete. It has has lasted for 18 months without needing repair. I think solvent based may affect the pads of dogs feet. (if they are placed in the kennel too soon after application)
  23. cheers sionnach the sire has been worked and dug for over for 9 seasons now. it's the first time i've bred him. i blame myself for not breeding him earlier!!!!! the only reason i never took anything from him before is because any decent bitches we own are all blacks. maybe i'll regret that!! who knows ?? the dam of the pups was bred in county cork. working wise she was a slow starter, maybe thats the border in her? she has came good anyway, and is worth her weight in gold. fingers crossed pups will work 2. Good luck with the pups, any photo of the dam?
  24. Fine looking dog, ATB with him.
