Glad to help. Anyone with the knowledge, kit and respect for their quarry and surroundings can and should catch moles if they want - whether as a favour, for shooting permissions or as a living. It seems to me on this forum here that those who make money at it seem to think that those who dont should not do it. To be honest there are many landowners who would never consider paying for mole catching anyway but will pay in kind. Therefore amateur mole catchers like me aren't doing the professionals out of a job as we get access to land they would never be invited on anyway. Besides whi

Simple answer - use a Talpex or Talpa trap. The other types of trap require the mole the actually touch the trap itself to spring them - i.e. moles has to push against metal. The Talpex or Talpa requires the mole only to push soil onto the plate which triggers the trap. Therefore better traps for the mole that likes plugging traps with soil because the very act of plugging the trap will get it caught. Ta, Dave.

I see that www.ratbait.co.uk also sell them - see link:- http://www.ratbait.co.uk/trapline-mole-trap-895-p.asp I got some Talpex traps from them last year and fair play they were the genuine article so I would explect their Trapline moles traps to be also. Ta, Dave.

Mole trapping is straight forward enough with a bit of practice and the right traps and trading mole trapping for permissions makes perfect sense. I have caught 60 in 12 months with out trying too hard for my brother and in return I get all the wheat I want for pheasant shooting over 250 acres. My advice is get about 10 talpex (www.ratbait.co.uk) or talpa mole traps (www.magnumtrap.com) - the latter do a deal on 10 or more. Get an old spade and grind it down to about 4 inches wide so about the same width as the traps as you should only make the holes just big enough for the traps. Inves

Describe how you set your Talpex traps at the moment and I might be able to help. Also switch off the caps lock. Ta, Dave.

An alternative to the mildot system is the Specialized Reticule (SR) which you can get on some of the Hawke scopes which are brilliantly demonstrated by Nick Jenkinson on these 3 videos this is the 1st in the series of 3:- I bought the Hawke Nite-Eye 4-16x50 IR AO SR6 scope brand new for £120 and really pleased with it. As James said get them from www.ratbait.co.uk. I got 10 from them and they are the genuine ones, very strong, plus they turned up straight away. I also got 10 Talpa traps from www.magnumtrap.com/moletraps.html which also work well. They probably aren't as well made as the Talpex traps but are a bit cheaper and easier to set with the handles. One tip when using Talpex or Talpa traps is to riddle the soil back in from the nearest mole hill to almost the top of the trap. I got a simple plastic garden sieve for £1.50 from my local agri firm and not missed a mole since is starte

I went for a walk around my shoot today to check on the pheasant feeders and took my AA S510 in case a squirrel might be attracted to them. I have been trapping the squirrels hard with Mark 4 Fenns but you can never get them all with traps and as predicted I saw the movement of grey as I approached one of my feeders. I moved slowly as sudden movement spooks them and although he had moved away from the feeder a twitching tail gave away his position in a nearby tree. I reckoned he was about 15 yards which is spot on for my near zero point. I steadied myself as it was free standing shot slowl

Hi, I have an Optima Moonlighter which is 3-9x45 - must be 27 years old and still as good as the day I got it. I have been using it very successfully on my AA S510 until 2 months ago when I upgraded to a Hawke Nite-Eye 4-16x50 SR6 IR AO which I am very pleased with. I hope it serves me as well at the Moonlighter. Cheers, Dave.

has anyone made own red or amber filters for lamp?

Quality street wrappers over the end of my P7 LED Lenser work great -
I just bought a cheap platic garden sieve (£1.50) to riddle the soil once I have set my Talpex and Talpa traps to ensure no stones or clods drop in when I fill the trap in with soil. Worked well today as I accounted for a problem mole with a Talpex trap

Get a cheap bird feeder, put some peanuts in it and hang it close to your trap. Small birds like blue tits soon find it and start feeding. This activity soon comes to the attention of the squirrels who are draw to the area to investigate the possibility of a free meal and soon get caught. Its the same principle that draws squirrels to bird tables and pheasant feeders. As winters draws on it gets even more effective. Also nice to think the small birds are not only getting feed but helping to kill the "nest robbers" lol !!! Cheers, Dave.

Molecatching Charges
davedavedave replied to Shrophunter's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Yes I agree. In fact for anyone looking for permission to shoot on a farmers land why not offer to do some mole catching first that way the farmer gets to know you, like you and trust you. Its a sprat to catch a mackerel. -
Done one in Excel (and scanned into PDF for here) for zeroing my air rifle. I find it works well with my Hawke Nite-Eye SR6 scope with it Christmas tree reticle as each square is about 1 inch by 1 inch. target.pdf

2 garden stakes from B&Q - 1.8m long and 16mm wide which are £1.99 each Pipe insulation from B&Q - 1m long with an inner hole of 13mm so nice snug fit over the takes which is £0.77 cut into 25cm lengths so enough to do 2 sets. An old inner tube to wrap around the stakes - free 1 elastic band at the bottom to keep the stakes together. Works for me. Cheers, Dave.

Molecatching Charges
davedavedave replied to Shrophunter's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Which part of Shropshire mate? I've heard that a bloke near Cleobury Mortimer (South East Shrophire) charges £10 a mole. -
LED Lenser P7 is great. I used my new one last night lamping foxes with the wrapper from a Quality Street toffee as an amber filter and my mate dropped a fox stone dead with his .222 Bruno. We used a laser range finder afterwards and it was about 100m which shows how far it shines even with a filter so certain more than enough for air rifle work which is what I bought it for. Cheers, Dave.

Shooting Sticks
davedavedave replied to davedavedave's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hi Dave, the problem with the pipe insulation is that the sticks won't close for carrying. Hi Mate, Mine do actually close with an elastic band at the bottom but I perfer them open anyway as I can carry them on my shoulder when out on my own. Cheers, Dave.
