Today I finally joined the ranks of the mole catchers who have caught moles that weren't plain old black so quite chuffed with myself. They looked silver/grey to me.

Cheap Or Expensive Mole Traps
davedavedave replied to scotfalconer's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
If you are spending time and money traveling to jobs and doing the work of locating and digging why waste your time and money on traps that don't work? It's crazy. Could not agree more -

Great write up by the way Hutch - looks like you have been well and truely bitten by the mole catching bug -
http://www.ratbait.co.uk/talpex-mole-trap-490-p.asp Le Braconnier is spot on with that link - good company to deal with too as often I have had next day delivery.

I get near 100% catch rate with genuine Talpex traps. The way I see it is that after the effort of finding and preparing to set a mole trap why not give yourself the best chance of catching a mole with the best trap you can get. I change per mole and once one of my traps catches a mole which is usually within the first 48 hours its already paid for itself and my quality traps with last for many years and so go on paying for themslves. I take the customer around with me which inspecting my traps so a high catch rate always impresses them, makes me look professional and in turn gets me ma

Losing A Mole Job On The Golf Course
davedavedave replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Sounds like there are a load of existing mole tunnels sat under the surface ready to be reoccupied. When they do the mole hills will start reappearing and as they get renovated by the new moles this will lead to some unhappy golfers moaning which will shortly be followed by you getting a call. Then you will draw a sharp in take of breathe and say "mmmm its a bigger job now" and "prevention is better than cure". Fingers cross for you mate and hope you soon get the job back. -

They probably know nothing about moles and dont think they have a problem as you have got their numbers right down. However unchecked their numbers will soon rise and they will be calling you in again so sting them for a bigger fee. atb, Dave. -

Totally agree about Talpex in very wet soil so a trick I use is to have a bucket of dry soil handy so if setting Talpex traps is proving difficult because of the wet then use some of that.. -

Yes exacty - if I make the hole too big in goes a barrel. Also I favour barrels on swallow runs so I can save Talpexs for deeper runs as the Talpex is less fiddly to set. -

Although I am a Talpex man I do use barrels (Flatpack) and got my 2nd ever double last weekend which is a buzz especially as I had the customer with me who was impressed too. As you say pretty close and often its only once I have opened up the mole run do I get a gut feel which type to use. Saying all that I did a job last Saturday and only had scissor traps available (long story) so was kind of nice to go 'retro' and even better when the 1st scissor trap caught in an hour and I've had a couple more since. The sight of a scissor trap in the 'V' position is a buzz too, I guess I just l -

Yes well done from me too Which traps caught the moles - the talpex or the barrels and which of the 2 do you like best so far? atb, Dave. -
Dont buy the 'Talpa' trap from the Magnum Trap company as mine have rusted whereas the genuine Talpex traps from www.ratbait.co.uk I bought at the same time are as good as knew. I am doing a job at the moment and its 11 moles from 11 Talpex traps sprung. The way I see it you go to all that effort to find mole work, petrol to get to a job, find the runs and bed the traps etc - why not give yourself the very best chance of catching the moles by buy getting the best traps. Buying cheap traps is just a false economy and does not impress the customer either when your traps get sprung but wi

How To Set Mole Traps ?

Have a look at this video on You Tube which should point you in the right direction:- atb, Dave -
I agree with Le Braconnier - I would pick a Talpex trap over a tunnel trap but each to his own. atb, Dave.

I would say you paid about £1.70 a trap too much compared to www.ratbait.co.uk

Claw Traps Compared Talpex .v. Flatpack
davedavedave replied to Le Braconnier's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Well I bought some genuine Talpex (from Raitbait) and Talpa traps (from the Magnum Trap Co) 3 years ago. The Talpex traps still look as good as new whilst the Talpa traps have rusted - some quire badly. Therefore I would give the Talpa a miss. Dave. -
£7.00 + vat + £5.95 delivery from www.ratbait.co.uk Delivery is set at £5.95 regardless of the number of traps you order or anything else included in the order. atb, Dave

I charge £20 for the 1st mole then £10 for each mole after with a 'no catch/no fee' policy. I make this clear up front on my business cards, web site etc and then customer can either take it or leave it. atb, Dave.

2.5" ash wedges for axes are perfect for making the chin bar and the off cut for the block for leverage. I am in the process of getting the bits to make some of these traps and here are the wedges I picked up at my local agricultral merchants:- http://www.tfmsupers...roduct_id=88951 Sorted for a mere 26p atb Dave.

Was it worth the money?
-
Yes agreed mate money is tight but we can also barter our mole catching skills for other things other than money sometimes. For instance i have done some mole cacthing for a farmer who I knew would not pay but instead secured the shooting over 100 acres of his land so he is happy and so am I.
