  1. well i bought one of the typp ratcher pups advertised in the cmw, did'nt pay £350 though, paid a reasonable price for a lurcher but won't say what. He's 4 1/2 month old now, and coming on nicely. Had him out with the ferrets a couple of times, seem's to be picking up the idea, although we have'nt bolted anything. so it kind of makes it a bit harder lol. I want a good all rounder, mostly for ferreting mouching and lamping. At the minute he measures about 22" tts, so i'm thinking he might make a sizeable dog. My last lurcher was a collie x and was a good dog, but she could be a bit temperamen
  2. there's a good side and a bad side to it. i work for a landscape gardener so have'nt worked for a month, so no money for a month (killing me) , plus side getting out plenty with ferrets and my pup
  3. I took my daughter and my 4 1/2 month old pup out with one of the ferrets today. It was my daughters first time out so she enjoyed it. Did'nt get a bloody thing though, it's getting a bit hard going around here. Would have been nice to get a rabbit to get her and the pup off on the right foot. She's already lifting nets like a pro and the pups starting to pay an interest, so it was'nt such a bad day
  4. Some good points being made, it's important that a pup is aloud to be a pup. I walk my 4 month old pup and you see him pick up empty pop bottles, and his favourite at the moment lost gloves, and he runs about throwing them in the air etc. The first thought is "oh my god son, where's your dignity, you supposed to be a lurcher". But when you actualy watch him, he drops it runs off turns around runs back and picks it up as he passes. All this is important part of his training, when you watch he's actualy practicing his strike. So my thoughts are even if it looks undignified and not what a working
  5. nice looking dogs mate, and cracking scenery, could almost be in the Arctic circle
  6. on the subject of permission, i live not to far from sheffield, and try as i might i can't get permission. i don't even mention dogs, just ask for permission to ferret, and hope to get a foot in the door. but alas to no avail. I've taken up drystone walling as a bargaining tool, 2 years fecking hard work in all weathers, still no joy. Around this area we seem plagued by real rural crime like landrover and quad thefts, so they seem to think if they don't let people on their land, they cut down the risks. which you can't blame them for that, but what do you do? give the game up completely? there
  7. I only saw one thug on the show on sunday, and that was john craven! Ok the lads did'nt exactly put forward a good case, but bearing in mind they'd just been pulled by 3 police vans, and had craven and a film crew interrogating them, i think they could have done worse. And as for baiting, well i think the worse case of baiting was craven trying to provoke a response to prove the thug theory. As for permission, i can't see a farmer standing on tv and saying yes i gave permission, bearing in mind he'd he'd be liable for prosecution. And as for tearing up the fields, from what i saw they were p
  8. i don't know how true it is, but do you have to stump up the money to pay the vets and then claim it back?
  9. imo it has to be 5/8 greyhound 3/8 collie, you get best of both worlds. racier than a 1/2 cross, more brains than a 3/4 cross.
  10. i always use that trick, just as they're getting towards the hedge. Don't know whether it scares the rabbit or confuses it, but it definitely works
  11. jesus, i think i've just pi**ed myself i laughed so much
  12. any pics stabs? you don't tend to see many going in the direction of the collie
  13. cracking looking pup you've got there john, nice to see a pup showing some discipline atb andy
  14. jesus, they don't suffer from vertigo then? No problem. In fact I find the higher up I go the keener he gets at hunting. The scent is stronger up there at 2600 feet the last time i was that high, i had a trolley dolly offering me a drink, lol.thats certainly beautiful looking land and a good looking dog
  15. when i was a lad me and my brother used to get onto the top bunkbed and tease the family poodle and he used to jump onto the bed from standing, that must be 5'6". they're very agile. the shutzhund test does'nt surprise me, they've been used as police dogs in france
  16. you can't leave it like that, you've got to tell us people don't see the potential in a poodle unless they've owned one. i've always liked my collie crosses, and would'nt have strayed from that, if this poodle cross had'nt come along. hopefully he'll be all i envisaged.
  17. good news, must have been a worry. i take it the posty want be getting a xmas box, or will he
  18. here's my pup for starting next year 12 wks now
  19. i see it as a good trait, my old collie cross used to do it, it saves the rabbit being lost in her shadow or being spooked by the shadow, although she did'nt run to far out the beam. if my new pup starts doing this when i start him i'll be a happy man
  20. Sorry to hear that mate, the house must feel pretty empty right now . Mine live in and i don't think i'd change that. i think the wife would, the pup likes to go out do a lap of the garden then come back in and leave muddy foot prints all over. Right or wrong, mine get treat like a member of the family
