The advantages of cross breeding are longevity, hybrid vigour and improved health. Fair play to you for being responsible enough to think about finding homes for surplus pups. I have worked pure GSPs, Pointers and English Setters but my favourite was an accidentally bred cross between an English Setter and a GSP. I have seen a lot of Viszlas field trial and in my opinion their advantage is that they are more biddable and easily controlled than some other HPRs. The ones I have seen tended not be as hard driven as GSPs, they were calmer and were soft mouthed and didn't range as wide. The Wirehai

you would dock a whole litter faster than i could type in this post.no offence lads but why dont ye dock your own pups, who is to know if ye dont broadcast the information.your first mistake is mentioning it on here.ignore stupid laws dreamed up by crooked bunny huggers and just do the sensible thing. -

i have one and he hunts foxes ahright but he needs another good dog with him to help.i lost my best dog last year ,he was a pointer /whippet/bullx springer.i used to get a rake of foxes in the cover with them because they hunted as a team. the springer on his own is ahright but the other dog i had was way better,he was finding everything and the springer was only joining in,but hes still not bad but wouldnt touch my old dog. i reckon if you cross springers with terriers you get better dogs for foxes. The springers i have now are finding foxes much faster than the beagles,i know what you me

don't be upsetting yourself, life is too short for all that.

breeding is everything especially in lurchers used on foxes full time.
-
not in my experience.i dont lamp rabbits at all mainly foxes and i couldn't imagine any whippet taking foxes single handed night after night.

to give the foxes a chance to rear their cubs

breeding is everything,if the parents aren't working don't buy, wait for the right pup.

the hardest most determined and best i ever kept was a bitch.for example many years ago ran her in a big deep place, the collar packed in and she was always mute, she would just destroy foxes.this day cos of collar packing up she was on game around 9 hours and when we got to her was still locked solid.this is just my case,a lot of excellent dogs too.to answer your question dog or bitch doesn't matter, heart and breeding matters.
-
couldn't imagine anybody using them these days.friends of mine used a wire coated one years ago with a hound pack and to be fair was a handy bitch but it was just a fluke i think.

YOU FXXKIN MAD a whippet can easily catch a rabbit at 5 months. i trained one up the season before this one for a bloke im a true beleiver in starting them young none of this blowing there lungs or hearts crap as long as it ran doubled up with an experienced dog its fine they arnt doing as much then and as they get more able they join in more and they see that most rabbits are caught this gives them confidence and drive. then when there 12 months you can let them run single. the blokes whippet caught her first at 4 months and at 5 months she had 4 or 5 then at 12 months have about 8-10 now sh

if you plan to do bigger stuff regularly then a properly bred wheaten cross is the way to go

ultimate night foxing lurcher(pre ban of course)????
dave a replied to ioan78's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Very true but if proper working wheatens and pit bulls are used (especially proper working wheatens)a much higher percentage will make the grade. -

dave a replied to ioan78's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
No it wouldn't, most of em cant take the bites, especially regularly thats why wheaten or bull adds to it. -
If you keep lurchers only for work their coat or hair shouldn't matter.I hear poodles dont moult, might suit ya.

Bull hound or wheaten hound. These crosses bred off proper working dogs back to good coursing greyhounds, not track failures,if bred right they are unbeatable, also of course this cross, bred lurcher x lurcher from the best stock should be better still.
