Interesting question. There is some sage advice here. It takes a special kind of stupid to go about it the way I've managed to. I would only add, be honest with yourself in your search. Define your wants/needs in a dog and pay attention to what you see, not what you hope to see. There is nothing quite like bringing along a solid prospect. The price tag, or lack of one, won't make the dog. The best chance you have of picking the right dog is starting with the right litter. Take your time.

My dogs come from the other side of the planet and they ain't free. I've bought plenty that sucked, and been given both good, and bad. But the type I like to hunt aren't easy to come by. I'm not saying they are better or worse than anyone elses. But It's taken years to get what works for what I do. There are greater sins in this world than paying for a damn dog.lol No offense intended.

I've been working the rocks some. Not for marmots though. It's a blast but scarry as hell at the same time. We don't have marmots, but everything else lives in these rocks including javelina, and the occasional lion. Most of the time it's small game though, Here's a small fox we got a couple of months ago. The bitch was supposed to be emptying out on the way up the mountain. But she had other ideas.

Those dogs look right Mister! I don't know much about the breed standard but it would seem to me that it shouldn't include an extra ten pounds. My hat's off to you. Nice looking kennels too.

Down here dogs are sold on trial with cash in hand all the time. It helps when you know the guy selling the dog. But one man's trash is another man's treasure here in the states. The reverse can also be true. I need a terrier than can not only locate, but track in very dry conditions. A man further north could sell OR give me a dog that did the job in his part of the country in good faith. I get the dog down here annd it stands on it's head. Is he a liar??? Did he sell me a POS??? The answer of-course is no. It was on me to know..I realize that things are done differently in other plac

He's at my partners house near Dallas. He's making a dog of himself so far. He's got ALOT of leg under him, and is very much like his older brother. No complaints out of this line of dogs.

With all due respect, If you buy a dog from a man you don't know without hunting the dog who's to blame if the dog turns out to be sht? A man's good name can mean more than the fact that he is selling or gifting a dog. I'd rather buy a good one, than be gifted a dog that won't do the job. Jm2c worth what you paid for it.

I think he was taking a breath. In the second picture he doesn't look light. Great pics!!! -
No.... your probably smart. Half the time I wish I had one back after a young dog washes out of gets killed. No right way to do it in every situation I suppose. It can't be about the money because the only thing you ever get for the time you put into a good one is the pleasure of hunting with it. I'm not sure I could put a price on that. Easier to pass one like that on to a guy down the road that you can still hunt with from time to time.

Doc you get to hunt in ways most of us can only dream of. I'd bet that the folks that get those dogs are as pleased as I was to get the old bitch. I don't know you, but if I hunted running dogs I know that I would be. @marshman, I respect that but is a proven dog always that one in a hundred that takes the spot of an up and comer until it dies. What's wrong with moving one in order to keep hunting, especially when the move will help the next man?? I have proven dogs that aren't that one in a hundred or more. That doesn't make them bad dogs... just not that rare dog.

There are valid reasons for moving a good older dog. I just bought a seven year old bitch from a man in Slovakia. I have two of her sons that made dogs of themselves, and when he offered her I knew it was because of the rules of the club he is a member of. His name means something in my book, so if he says it's a good dog, I believe it. He could have sold her to me for a ton of money but he didn't. I got her for the price of a pup which is pretty generous in my book. I think that's the catch though... His name is good because he is honest, and his dogs are consistantly what he says they are.

Anybody got any 13" Terriers and how are they in the field?
jawn replied to tiger82's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Do you guys not find dens in the bush? Here most everything dens (when it does) under mats of interwoven blackberry and ivy... poison and otherwise. The dogs have to locate under this sht, and then you have to chop your way to em to dig them out. -
Thanks Bulljack! His mama and another bitch got three the night before the picture. I shot this one out to him and his brother. These two are gonna be heavy boned but small I think. The daddy is under thirteen and the mama right at it.

It just hit me Doc. I ain't all that bright so you'll have to forgive me. I haven't ever hunted dogs like y'all do up there, so it took me a minute. I'm sure barbwire is a nightmare for what you do. One of these days I'll get with someone who drops running dogs on coyote. Looks like as much fun as one man can have.
-
Thanks Doc. She's a tough old bitch though. I think she'll be o.k. in a week or two. She's seen far worse. I worry as much over yotes as I do hogs, they are terrier killers. They are the reason I got the drahthaar in the first place. My dogs are trashy as hell, and find ways to get their butts kicked on a regular basis. I have coons work them over with regularity. I keep no more than three dogs on the ground at any one time, and more often than not less. Dead is dead and it doesn't take long to get there with either.
-
Not this time. She's been beat up plenty by hogs though. She got hung up in a barbwire fence chasing after a coyote. Her partner in crime got jumped and she tried to give chase and got herself stuck pretty good. When I got to her she was a mess, and after I freed her she took off after it again. I had to call he back in with the e-collar or she would have hunted all night. I was worried about infection so I loaded them up and called it a night. I have a great vet.. but she wasn't able to close her up all the way. So now she's got a cushy place in the house for the next couple of weeks. She's a

I have a couple of little ones. What they lack in size they make up for in drive. They have problems keeping up with hogs, but with small game they hold their own.- 44 replies

Your a sad little man stunt. I bet I hunt more in the average week than you do in a month. But your right about one thing... I do allot of walking after my dogs. As for the bulldogs... those days are long gone. I like remembering them from time to time.
