Why do you choose specific breed as female over male
huntingalltheway replied to Bigshrimp's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Other way around mate: male (i.e. sperm) decides sex. Females have double X (XX) and male has X and Y (XY), so in meiosis when the cells are split the femal egg will always have an X and the sperm can either have an X or a Y. Great discussion all! Do you find that looks of the offspring change depending on which breed you use as male vs. female?? (Trigger touched on this but hoping for some more detail...or even pics!) alsatian as the mum 7 weeks old not the best pic i have one with the sire -

hi lads heres my alsatian x greyhound pup. how big do you think he'l get mum the alsation was 24.5tts and sire was 28.75tts. think he looks a nice pup greyhound in the picture one of the honchos is sire and the sandy dog at the back is my 7 month lurcher. and the other is the alsatian x greyhound

whats a good % of protein
huntingalltheway replied to smiffyuk2003's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
you need both protein is one of the first to burn fat only gets burnt once all the other stores have been used. but most good foods should be 25-28% protein and 12-18% oil. but your right oil is just as important as once all the protein stores are gone it feeds on the fats rather than your dogs body mass. but if you dont run your dog enough on these high protein and fat diets you'l have one fat dog so no good for off season dogs -
Why do you choose specific breed as female over male

there has been lengthy test on the make up of the dna of dogs an yes it is almost the same but the last section cant be properly 100% mapped. but it has already been proven that there are certain sex dominant traits. hence why when you breed greyhounds you pick the best bred bitch as they seem to follow the dam more than the sire now this has been tried and tested in greyhounds and now in breeding the dam is regarded higher than the sire. this has been this way for years. like i said its been tried and tested and in most cases they seem to follow the dam. this isnt 100% as it doesnt all ways w -
whats a good % of protein
huntingalltheway replied to smiffyuk2003's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
i prefere i really high protein around 28% and when bringing pups up i have a 30% puppy food but its not just about protein you have to have all the right amino acids and vitamins and minerals in the food to help assist the dogs body in the break down of the protein so the body can use this as energy other wise the protein turns to fat cells if not broken down. also the first ingrediant in the food should be meat. if it is a cereal based food it again doesnt give the dog the best source of energy. there are many good foods most of the above are good. always if you can give the dog a mixture of -
Why do you choose specific breed as female over male
huntingalltheway replied to Bigshrimp's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
modern genetics only says that each parent gives 50% of the required chromazones of the dna of a dog. but certain chromosones are sex dominant this has been proven now for years hence why greyhound bitches have the most regarded line. hence with flint08 crosses of horse and donkey is a great example. which yet again displays there are sex dominant chromazones -
Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???

not to sure on this but isnt it common in america to run deerhounds and then for the power you use xs like great dane/pitbull/greyhound x great dane/greyhounds or mastiff/great dane x deerhound 7 years ago when visiting my uncle in texas they were using these types of dogs. now he lives by winipeg in canada as they could do all types of work really big powerfull animals totally different to our dogs. could take deer. boar fox anything that could move. so how do you think a whip/grey could improve on your sport when you already have the deerhound for pace and then your big powerful breeds which -

im told from people i know who have owned the first xs that you want the better dog as the bitch because they follow the mothers way instead of the fathers. this isnt just the ways in lurchers in greyhound breeding its the dams line that is highest regarded so there must be something proven that they do follow the mum more than the dad. hope this helps -

just because a dog wont run at rabbits next to the hedge dont mean they have no prey drive it just means there brainy, why fight a endless battle.we all know that some of them come back in to the field but more of them get through.my dog does it and at times you think stop pissing about and run that beam but it aint that bad because she picks squaters out of the seat just walks to them a dog that runs the beam flat out will be tired quicker than the one that walks so i can live with missing the odd one on the edge just my oppinion exactly, especialy at the end of the season non come ba

not much a landlord can do to you. but remember every 6 or 12 months you have to renew your tennancy with your landlord and the landlord can if he decides not to renew your tennancy due to to many complaints. as law goes it depends on whatg time of day and how often it happens. there is no law persay on noise its through the enviromental agency as it gets put under noise pollution act. i know this sounds daft but had same probs myself and as long as landlord is on your side your be fine. but if your neighbours can prove that your dogs make more noise over the maximuium level of noise aloud for

traditional lurchers
huntingalltheway replied to huntingalltheway's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
do you think its true to his breeding or do you think its just his traits. so as ferreting goes hes mustard but lamping hes avarage. how old is he and has he had much work day or night. i know some of these questions seem pointless just helps me to get better picture. Not sure if its his breeding or just his traits!! as i allways ran suluki type lurchers before this one!! down my way yor lucky if you get 20 runs in a night due to the small fields and generally they all congregate together in groups and as soon as you run one the rest get on there toes and head for cover !!that field ove -

cheers so far for the info. keep it coming. still like to know if the owners think say for example that there better day dogs then lampers or maybe the other way round. all info appreciated the more im tolled the more i can learn of the breed and preformance cheers lads. My bitch was only used on the lamp until about a year ago which she excels at IMO but she took to day work like a natural, she's 6 now and had never seen a ferret or a rabbit in the day for that matter...I've had a few collie crosses and its their willingness to learn new things i find appealing, great dogs for the way i hun -

i flick the rabbits off fences and when running back at me i circle the lamp which seems to help as the rabbit slows down and i know this off topic but you can stunn fish in pools and lakes in the shallows by twirling the lamp in cycles it puts the fish off and you can grab them out with your hands. so shows light can put things off

alsatian x greyhound
huntingalltheway replied to huntingalltheway's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
few of my mates have alsation in there dogs some first x and others not each one is hard as nails i think its just the way there brought up and entered. but there plenty fast enough for rabbits and do well because they use there brains and apply there speed when needed not just run round flat out on a rabbit when not needed. make a great deer dog in your country as they've got the speed to catch them but also the power to hold them. -
i had also been told that but i now think some dogs just do it anyway like parkstone whippets said it can just be over excitement which sometimes can calm down but ive started loads young and the only dog to be vocal is the one and only i started later.
